in the 90's in Poland, police do the same old shitty cars painted like police car and cardboard policeman. My dad used to laugh each time we pass one of these. Now they give up and placed cameras everywhere.

While I haven't been to China in many years now, probably 15 years or so, I well recall an incident where, staying with my host family, the father had just bought a new motorcycle and had left it outside his house. A few hours later, there was a commotion outside as one of the neighbors had spotted a guy trying to hotwire the bike. Pretty soon a whole crowd had gathered round the guy, and nobody recognized him, he was apparently a transient worker. They were asking him why, if it was really his bike, he was hotwiring it. When the actual owner finally came along and everybody recognized him and they could finally be sure that a crime was in commission, they quite literally ran the guy out of town - he took off running and the mob of people chased after him til he was outside the city limits. The interesting thing about this is that there was a police station just two blocks up the road from where this started. Not one single person bothered to go fetch the police. They all understood the police were only there to get after political/ideological crimes, and didn't care about any other types of crimes. Nope, the community has to police itself. And they do. Of course, that was a fairly small town where people do know their neighbors well and so that sort of thing still works, and good for them for looking out for each other. And shame on the police for not being willing to deal with actual real crimes like that.

My weirdest experience was in 2005 we took a sleeper train from Beijing to ZhengZhou and the luggage scanner to board the train was FAKE; half the people were scanning their luggage and the other half just walked around the scanner with their luggage.

I guarantee that even if all the machines were broken in a major us TSA terminal they'd still pretend to scan everybody's luggage all day long, in fact I bet they take an official training for that scenario.

When I was boarding a plane in Xian in about 2001, the metal detector was going off as every single person walked right though it, It was beeping like crazy, and nobody stopped or was stopped by anyone LOL

The advanced versions of these government fakes can be seen anywhere in the world: It's just that in western countries the politicians don't fake it using cardboard boxes, but million dollar "programs" where the money is just thrown down the drain of some billion dollar corporation. During my time as a computer scientist in a European university (Switzerland), I myself have worked in "government projects" which were supposed to bring "digitalization" to the smaller corporations. But it was utter fake as it did not nearly address the actual underlying problems of these smaller corporations. We all knew - but the goal and the method of the project had been decided from people earning many many times my salary. So you see - we have our own "cardboard police officers" in Europe...

@@sephypantsu Well no. It's not as absolute as all of that. You can make an effort. For myself I don't have any mobile phones as I have no use for them. But I do eletronics repair and have thousands of video games and audio equipment galore. If I'm buying components, I tend to use sites like Cultivate to check where the components were made, and reject any cheap Chinese knock off stuff. So no you're quite wrong. It isn't as absolute as all that.

This seems surreal especially when not too long ago you talked about all these different Chinese police branch offices being opened in other countries around the world during your china show, and yet when it comes to the safety of their own citizen it almost feels like it's just of secondary importance. Thank you for bringing such an interesting topic that otherwise would have never come out of china by itself.

I have to assume that whoever came up with the idea just blew the minds of everybody he tried to get on board with it... and then they were blown away again because the crazy foreigners really did let them do it.

That poor baby, it breaks my heart. I had a bad habit of allowing my adhd to influence me into watching videos that were definitely not good for me when I was younger. The videos that stay in my head the most were ones from China, of people watching children and babies suffer but did nothing. A woman giving birth in the streets, and her newborn slamming into the concrete ground. A little girl run over by cars over and over. Newborn girls found in sewers and pipes. Drugged out infants while their “mothers” manhandle them. It’s despicable.

I remember seeing robotic policemen over 30 years ago in Japan. They were dressed in a real uniform and moved an arm up and down whilst holding an illuminated baton. They looked real even from a short distance and were placed at dangerous hot spots to slow down traffic and did the job well.

Daniel Kahneman ("Thinking Fast and Slow") talked about how experiments showed that people tend to behave better when they think they are being watched. An experiment with a community coffee machine showed people contributed what they should have even if there was just a picture of something kind of like a pair of eyes in the coffee room. That's the motivation for governments around the world to try to make people behave by having them think they are being surveilled. China, of course, excels in this.

That shit happens here in the Philippines too. I didn't know how kids worked, so I never questioned their eerie calmness. Sometimes, they even have another, older child that actually goes around to beg directly. It's usually a girl, and it's horrifying to think about just what their pleading tones truly meant. Come to think of it, the child being held by the "mother" is also sometimes "asleep..."

They do it everywhere these days especially if a lot of visitors are coming from out of town in the winter. Just ask anyone who works for a large scale landscaping company.

It's no different to the UK to be fair. Here we have cardboard policemen in petrol stations and supermarkets. And if your house is broken in to and burgled, the police will not lift a single finger to investigate - they'll issue a crime number to pass on to the insurers, and that's literally the extent of their involvement.

You were saying that nobody was helping beggars on the subway. Yeah, as a Chinese, I feel the same. Once, as a college student, I tried to help a desperate couple begging for about 300 RMB (~$45) with changes I had on me (about 10 RMB). Never would I expect that they responded with a weird sneer, saying that it was too less without showing any sign of appreciation. I immediately realized that it was a scam, but they had taken my money away already. Now, I believe that it's mainly because of the economic & social status of many of us. When seeing no path to "pursue happiness", many resorts to "faking doing things", chicanery, or even crimes.

As a kid I went with my family in China around 2007/2008 and me and my dad got seperated from my mom and brother after taking seperate taxi's. We were in a tourgroup and we didn't fit all in 1 taxi so we got dropped off at 2 different McDonalds, not sure which city but it was a pretty big one. We went to the police station and the cops were very friendly and drove us back to the hotel. He even offered my dad a cigarette. It is just sad to see the Police isn't as helpful to its own people. Even though the mid 2000's was a very different time compared to China now. I hope atleast the child you helped is doing better now.

They also had fibreglass policemen in South Korea when I was there, mostly out in the rural areas. They're pretty easy to spot, since there aren't many 8-foot tall Koreans. Stay Awesome!!

My short visit to Beijing didn't reveal many policemen,but I did notice the red armband Block Watchers.

I live in rural California and I've seen cops leave an empty police cruiser at an area known for speeding where you can easily see it to trick people into slowing down. This is very rare but it did seem to happen more often during the COVID outbreak.

Y'know, the reason you saw what the police did not is because you were able to view the situations there from and outside perspective. Nothing was normal to you (because it was a foreign country as a whole) so you paid attention to everything. That was why you were able to spot the criminals while the police were not. To them, a woman on the subway begging, is something to turn away from in shame. To you, that was something of intrigue and cultural difference. So you saw the people who were there in front of you, while others chose not to see. I also intervened to help someone while in China, and the only reason the problem was eventually solved was because a foreigner had made a fuss. (actually, as the woman who called the cops on my behalf explained, I "took responsibility for" the old man. ...as if to pre-distance herself from the situation. Very interesting)

Not one person smile or felt relaxed on that scene with everyone coming up the escalator 😮

In LA, decoy cop cars are pretty common too. They are working police vehicles (a little older ones) that they drive out to a location. They get moved very frequently (I believe every day) so that people don't start to realize its a decoy. If someone see's it, they can't tell its a decoy because its indistinguishable from random cop cars that just got parked for 30 minutes or so on the side of the street while the cop goes into a store or something (probably sneaking a smoke break lol).

This isn't really rare when you travel Europe either. It's just to get drivers' attention, or to remind them to drive safely. In my town we have several cutouts that look like one or more children moving towards the street on roads adjacent to schools for example, and I live in a town of barely 3k people. Edit: Also speed cameras often aren't hooked up to anything,except maybe power, afaik. They just have a memory card that can easily be removed and exchanged by a cop or contractor that drives by the camera once a week or so. Being in Germany I am actually really happy with how the police operate in my area (and I am absolutely not a fan of cops or the government) insofar as the fact that they plan their routes very carefully. "More burglaries in the area recently? We'll make sure to drive by 2-3 times a day." or "It's school time? We'll make sure to have an increased police presence at the school bus stops, and routes." I really do appreciate the good parts of the police, even if I'm not a fan of a lot of what they do. I mean good luck finding a cop you can bribe over here, in the east and africa its easy.

I wish the speed cameras didn’t work in my area! I fact, there was a lawsuit filed a few years ago where a nearby township had the speed cameras tampered with to write even more tickets. In the US, towns/cities use speed cameras as revenue generators. It sucks.

I remember in the late 70s Ridgecrest California had an old police car sitting on the side of the road at the entrance of town with a dummy in it in a police uniform in the drivers seat. It always made me laugh.

The Best (Or most weird) thing i've seen while i was in China would be that you don't see or hear birds. The only time you hear birds chirp is when you are near a hidden speaker. I was so baffled to see speakers hidden in the bushes playing bird noises

@@aliyahmorris1281 This was 5-6 years ago when i was exchange student for 3 weeks in China. We visited multiple places where this was apparently a thing. I'm from Scandinavia so birds chirping are a really common thing. I never imagined that I would hear it from a speaker. Pretty surreal.

Yes, depending on your situation. If you're not able to be in a Chinese speaking environment I'd suggest starting out by watching children's cartoons like xi yangyang also learn how to write (it's easier than you think), many people think they can just learn speaking... but even basic understanding of the written language helps immensely

@@serpentza imo reading is enough, writing less important. At least for me/my brain. I often wrote on the phone on a Pinyin keyboard and for that reading the chars is enough too. But not sure how much it helps for talk. That's very individual I believe. I do it by just listen carefully and then copy how a native speaker talks.

It absolutely blows my mind that humanity has come to this. I don't know of any other species that defiles its own habitat to this extent. Even plague locusts devour and move on, allowing mother nature to recover and have new growth. While I am not particularly worried about the actual planet, we humans are literally making the planet uninhabitable for ourselves.

New york can post up empty taxpayers cars. China can post up cardboard people..... I dont know if i'm happy or sad about this.

When I lived in Thailand they put up big posters showing real, graphic, uncensored images of kids that had been killed on motorbikes, alongside statue policemen on roads. Corrupt and uncaring when given a few baht. I literally saw 4 of my own little students on a motorbike one day in Broad daylight, the one in the middle driving. Same here in Poland. Its funny tho. Fake police man in villages, but our local police sqaud car for a small village is a sportcar xd

Just saw the china show and was confused when you said you put out a video. Had to go searching for it. Didn't come up in my notifications and I clicked the bell.

I see empty police cars with mannequins sitting in them on the side of roads in the US. It's to prevent speeding bc they rotate actual cops in the cat with the mannequins so people never really know. It's smart bc it saves on man power while keeping a presence.

Hey Serpentza. I used to live in Russia, and as far as I know, Russia has the highest police presence per capita. I used to see many, many cardboard police officers or police cars. And yes, in the countryside, the policing is basically nonexistent, while in big cities, they at best police poor immigrants or people who make honest mistakes - not career criminals Haven't been there for 8 years, but There might be some underlying similarity going on

It's also interesting that you see a lot of similarities between China and Russia, at least from an outsiders perspective. The use of whataboutisms and such. I didnt think the similarities would be the same with fake police cars and such. Thanks for sharing :)

We are heading in the same Direction in the west. Politicians who claim to be helping with Crime....by turning Crimes into Misdemeanors. Works Brilliantly. Crime is down!!

@@chellybub there are even more stark similarities. The drugged children - i used to think of it as a myth, but in the hindsight, I think this is also happening in Russia. Human life is worthless, so the organised crime can buy children from poor families. Whataboutism , too. But I try to take a step back understand how come China is *this* similar to Russia in so many aspects? What caused it? Is it sort of eastern approach to life, being distant from European civilisation, is it communist past, maybe something else? I don't think China proactively copied Russia in these little aspects

Good video, informative. Honestly, Winston, I don't know how you continue reporting about such a hopelessly disgusting and morally bankrupt society. When I was there, I knew I couldn't live among them long-term. You hear people say 'I love China and the Chinese people!' (women chained to walls, eh?). I don't harbor such illusions.

this is just a special case and can't represent the whole China. you must know that there are how many cases in Europe and US that people are detained, especially the women and Children, there are more disgusting pedophilia people in western societies.

Yeah, here in the US we have a government that lures the women (and everyone else it can), by telling them lies, across raging flood waters in South Texas where they arrive half drowned, traumatized, homeless and many of them having been raped, robbed, or otherwise abused along the way and/or forced to be drug mules. And what is this for? Even the US has these kinds of problems for those who can see things as they really are. Needless to say the mostly poor communities along the border that are being slammed with all these thousands of desperate people all day long, every day, are a whole other issue as well. Callousness is everywhere but people see it through their own lens.

Respect to you for your honesty

My man, you got my full and complete attention as i stopped shaving upon the start of your awesome story of stopping child abuse. Clearly your aware of your surroundings and not some dope staring at a screen all day long.. Big respect to you sir for doing what should have been done way sooner by authorities or commuters that make eye contact and have a sense of when something is not looking right... Anyways much much respect from Boston !

I love how you and Matt exist outside of the political binary and just bring the facts. You two are extremely valuable in these times, despite that the rest of the world might not agree.
