20 years ago when I was still a teenager, I stopped 4 pickpockets in a local bus in China. No one said anything, not a slightest gratitude from the would-be victim. Went home told my mum, she freaked out and told me never do that again, if those pickpockets were to drag me out of bus and beat me, no one would do anything.

This is called tactitcal and spiritual sense. You need to know if you can act.. If you cant then do not.. The general rule is .. if you know how .. then act.. but if you have to think about this. then do not. Even if you do think and know you are responsible for the outcome . So people are more careful.

@@robertbrozewicz8003 You sir, are full of shit. Even when a mentally deranged person was doing 10k$ in damage to my car and trying to break into my house, my neighbors, who don't like me, actually stepped in and did something like call the police and A WOMAN asked the guy what he thought he was doing. Thieves, who are more practical than crazy guys, are even more "tactical" which is why 4 people will run off when one person just says "hey, what are you doing?" The world isn't like the movies bro. Your parents gave you good info OP....that's why society is bad because of unnecessary fear, uncertainty, and doubt passed on. FUD ruins society. Obviously, if you are in a bank robbery or some situation you know you can't control, then there isn't much you can do without an opening, such as someone having a gun pointed at you. Someone who isn't in that situation that witnesses it should, I dunno, spend the 2 minutes to call the police because in that kind of situation you are a victim. In China, I would think there is not even fear of the CCP being perpetrators, but they don't use such crude methods in the daylight in public.

There was a Chinese female exchange student in my class where i studied 9 years ago, she had a weird habit of throwing trash on the floor in the class room. Another time her water bottle fell over on the table and soaked two other students PC's and got water on the floor, she didn't try to stop the situation, didn't say sorry and didn't even move to soak up the water she spilled, just sat there and kept on working on her own PC.

Thank you for this video. Sorry for using a throw away account-but I have to comment. I lived non-concurrently in Shanghai visiting family who had a job assignment there over 5 years (early 2010's; I myself having spent 12 months cumulatively there). I was upset at the "apathetic" attitude of people (this is saying it lightly) but I compartmentalized it as "this is the 'new york' of China+different culture". Being a young man I yearned for adventure and traveled extensively during those 12 months. I was devastated to see that the complete disregard for human life was evident everywhere across mainland china. Even the small towns. As a Soldier I have deployed to the middle east for the US military. I can say with complete honesty that I saw more people's souls leave their bodies and die in front of me in China than I did while in an active combat zone. I was not a fobbit, my job in the military is considered "combat arms"; I averaged a combat patrol every 48 hours. I watched 9 people actively die in front of me in China and no one stopped to help. Due to my family's position and my military affiliation I was briefed very clearly I was not to intervene. I pleaded with others to help. No one ever did. My platoon actively did more to help ENEMY COMBATANTS WE HAD SHOT WHO HAD BEEN SHOOTING AT US MINUTES BEFORE than Chinese do for their own people. My final straw with china was walking back from the wet market with groceries for the family. I waited at the stop light to cross the street. A lady across the road (legally) crossed the street when her light changed. I watched a speeding taxi run a red light, destroy the baby carriage, and watched the baby fly across the road and slam onto the pavement head first, dead instantly. The mother rushed over and was shrieking the most heart wrenching crying I have ever heard. Everyone walked by without batting an eye. This baby was the seventh human I watched die. I lost all hope in the mainland on that day. I know no one will read this because the video is old, but it's very cathartic to finally get it out.

No country is perfect. American people have their own societal problems as well. Don’t glorify poor people. Many of them have vices like drug use or just too traumatized by abuse to get help. And of course our government can’t help them. I feel like homelessness has been at an all time peak since Covid, and it’s affecting the safety of people. This one guy tried to punch my friend in the face. One time this guy grabbed my ass and he ran off. I chased after him and was calling for help, no one came to help. I ended up cornering him and he pulled a knife out on me. Luckily I was able to talk him out of hurting me but..like I said, we have our problems too. This phenomenon of not helping people aka the bystander effect also happens in the US. I studied it in psychology.

I even had the experience of them teaming up very quickly, everyone (including myself). I was just walking in a park and saw a guy pocket picking from a couple sitting on a bench. So immediately I stopped him. I thought he would run, but he just stood there staring at me. I walked away. He followed me! I was supposed to meet a friend at her apt. He and another guy followed me all the way to the building. Before I could call my friend, they came to me said if I tried to intervene ever again, they will cut my face. I was in shock of course. My friend was not home yet. So I left the apt. The couple I helped was waiting at the apt gate. They saw the guys were following me and wanted to make sure I was ok. They waited with me until my friend showed up. It was very nice of them. There was a Chinese guy who stopped to help an old lady who had been knocked down. It wasn’t a scam. But she sued the good samaritan and the judge ruled against him saying, “If you weren’t the one who knocked her down, you wouldn’t have stopped to help.” That was an actual news article. It blew my mind. When I was in China, my ex-wife (she was my girlfriend then) and I left a KTV and there was this young guy in the parking lot drunk as shit just screaming at his girlfriend. All up in her face. She had her head down and was just taking it. I immediately start heading over there to stop him, but my ex physically stopped me and starting yelling at me to not get involved. She was furious. Her reaction was very shocking to me. Afterwards she was like, “This is China. You don’t understand. Don’t get involved.” Just the usual bullshit they say. She couldn’t understand that it didn’t have to be that way. I have a theory that Chinese people are conditioned to do nothing because it makes them easier to control. It’s easier for the CCP to keep power if the citizens don’t stand up to injustice. They have a vested interest in keeping the population meek and selfish. They claim to have this collective, but in practice everyone looks out for themselves. This way they won’t raise a finger when they see a neighbor get screwed over by the CCP.

I think your analysis is spot on. On the one hand the regime says it's the patriotic duty to struggle for the benefit of the nation but on the other hand if you stand up for oppressed people even on a small scale you threaten the status quo because if people will take action against injustice it means they won't tolerate a neighbor being hauled off for criticizing the local or national government and it all starts to unravel.

About 13 years ago I had a similar experience walking home on summer from middle school in Busan, South Korea. It was my second year of living back in Korea, and on my way home I saw a man and a woman standing over an elderly woman who was on the sidewalk, next to a steep hill. This was a busy street, with plenty of students and adults going about their business. She kept saying "I can get up I'll be okay" while the man was being wishy washy about maybe calling someone with his hands in his pockets and the younger woman just watched. I was pretty small but I insisted on helping her and managed to lift her up and half-carried half dragged her back to her apartment. When we almost got here, a hair salon owner started shouting at me telling me to let go of her and stop assaulting(?) her. The older lady explained what had happened and the hair salon owner thanked me, taking down the name of the school I went to and my name. I arrived at my home drenched in sweat and told my mother about this, expecting some degree of praise. Instead she said that I was naive and retarded, that I should have just left her there, that kids get kidnapped "all the time". She then called my dad at work to have him "yell at me" to explain why what I did was wrong. It felt like shit to be told this crap and even have my older siblings say "well that's just how things are". I just felt bitter and disappointed. It felt so contradictory and hypocritical for people to be this way in a country where "ethics" is a core class from first grade through high school. As much shit as I might get for pointing this out, I think the attitude that most people had/have, whether it was the very tight circle of concern, or over-emphasis on outward appearance and social status is definitely a shared characteristic with mainland China.

Say you broke someone's ribs while resucitating them. Without good samaritan laws, the victim could turn around and sue you for the pain and suffering. Or maybe you try your best saving someone but make their situation worse/kill them: If intent was to help (and it's not obvious that you are harming them) you'll not be punished. You need both good Samaritan laws as well as failure to provide aid. The latter btw does not mean you need to endanger your own live. So if you are scared, all you need to do is call 112/911/999 and call it in. Unlike this case in the US were man was drowning and a few teenagers filmed it and laughed but didn't even call 911. They went unpunished. That's not how society with many different people can work.

Yeah, there was a case here several years ago in Australia (I believe it was in Melbourne, but I could be wrong; I'll try & find a link and post it here) where a female Chinese national hit and ran over a woman on a pedestrian crossing and then stopped and reversed over her, and then repeated this manoeuvre forwards and backwards over her body several more times to make sure she was dead. She then attempted to drive off, dragging the woman underneath the car and only stopped because the victim's body finally prevented the vehicle from gaining traction and continuing forward motion. Immediately after the incident, when the driver was forcibly dragged out of the driver's seat by shocked bystanders while continuing to attempt to flee (her car was raised on top of the victim's corpse to the extent that the front driving wheels were raised high enough to loose traction and were spinning at maximum RPM's because she had her foot flat down on the accelerator pedal). The driver confessed to these witnesses that she actually tried to kill the person she had accidentally run over because of the following belief in her own Chinese culture: If you kill a person by accident, you will have to pay their family some compensation in a lump-sum payout and receive punishment under criminal law system (you may go to prison and/or receive a fine; depends on how well-connected you are with the local officials). However if you simply injure the victim badly and permanently disable them, you will be liable to pay for their rehabilitation and living expenses (and that of their dependents) for the rest of their (and possibly your) life. So in other words in Chinese culture, it it better to simply kill someone outright an accident and pay their family upfront, rather than simply injure them seriously and be stuck with looking after them & their dependents financially for the next 50 or more years. When the case went to court, the driver had changed her story to something along the line of "I thought I had run over a bag of rubbish that was in the middle of the road which had got stuck under my car, and reversed back & forth several times to remove it". I believe she ended up getting a reduced sentence because the prosecution could not prove beyond reasonable doubt her intent to murder (her "confession" to witnesses at the time was deemed "inadmissible" evidence in court). Rumour had it that this lady was the wife/mistress of a Chinese diplomat or senior Party Member however the whole thing was quickly hushed-up and reporting of the court proceedings conveniently gagged.

I'm often stepping in to say something or stop something bad from happening to others to the point where i began to think it was because there's so many people in China that the value of human life was less through the peoples' eyes. Serpentzas' channel has opened my eyes so much to the control and why, I honestly feel bad for the people but at the same time I wont watch while the attitude corrupts its' surroundings. It's sad and sickening.

I've seen it here in North America too. Chinese immigration has completely destroyed my once very cohesive neighborly town where we used to all say hi to one another as we pass strangers on the street. I blame our government for bringing in huge waves of newcomers like this.

I was afraid since I have no training about these situations I might hurt them even more. What you're saying is absolutely true. I live in Shenzhen. I remember last year When I stepped out of a bus lifting two bags of groceries, I accidently stepped in a big pit on the road and severely hurt my anckle. I was so painful that I can't stand up. Even though there were so many people around, for more than 10 minutes, no one helped me. At last I was dragged rudely to the roadside because the bus driver thought I was on his way. I feel pathetic being a chinese because I have always been proactive to help strangers and then when I needed help no one tried to help. Sad.

Like other commenters have mentioned, this stuff seems dystopian. As someone from India , this type of injustice (stealing , kidnapping etc.) will get someone beaten to a pulp or publically shamed and detained. The police will come take what is left of the perpetrators. The mindset of the Indian public is if a person gets their rights violated and nobody does anything , tomorrow it could be my son/daughter/relative or even me. Then nobody would stand up for the person.

While my wife and I were at the grand canyon about10 years ago we encounter this middle age woman coming up the trail from the bottom of the canyon. It was obvious that she had not gone far down that steep trail since she had abosolutly no backpack, water, proper shoes etc. As soon as she saw us, she began madly taking picture of the most mondane things, click click click. We figured that she needed help and found that she spoke only Chinese. We used sign language to get her to reluctantly follow us up the trail. We suspected that she became separated from her Chinese tourist group which we saw earlier in the day. My wife stayed with her at the head of the trail while I ran ahead and found a park ranger who radioed ahead to find the group who were getting ready to get on their bus. To make a long story short, the english speaking group leader brusquely brushed me aside and took the women by the arm an hustled her on the waiting bus. He never thanked me or the ranger and he actually gave me dirty look as if I was the cause of all this. Now I know why.

That's what most people would expect a nearby stranger to do in a developed nation (like Taiwan). The video dealt with the "not my problem"/"probably a scam" mindset on the mainland (which is likely a side effect of the social structure engineered by the party). There was no insinuation that this was a society flaw in ethnic Chinese society. As another poster commented, they remember seeing this behaviour back in other communist nations years back. Social trust is just shattered by authoritarian rule.

And yah… over the course of 10 minutes or so the whole truck ends up fully ablaze and the screaming stops…. From England here. True story. I found a guy in broad daylight bleeding, dazed, walking down the street. He'd been stabbed. I used my mobile phone to call for an Ambulance which eventually came and took him to hospital. I proceeded then to carry on home where my phone rang, and it was from the Police. They'd traced my address from the phone call. They came to my house and took me in a police car back to the scene, and refused to talk or explain anything to me on the way. When I got to the scene which by now was taped off, I was questioned as suspect No.1. 'Do I know the man?' etc. No one said thanks for being the good Samaritan. Eventually a senior officer deduced that I was not the perpetrator, and said I could go. The whole incident left me with a sour taste. If the same thing happened again today, I'd keep on walking.

The public would note it down and would not hesitate to stop it and beat kidnapper. And all the crime would be highlighted by media. Initially I used to think law and order problem is worse in India but after looking at Serpenta videos, I understood that even after having law and order problems in India, it is far more better because atleast in most of case the law and order problems gets reported.

I once asked my dad if he feels like he needs to step in and resolve situations after hearing some wild stories from my parents when they were younger. Like stopping a mugging across the street from their LA apartment, at midnight, with his baseball bat, in his boxers. Keep in mind he’s a doctor and kinda Asperger’s, so he doesn’t really practice an idealist mindset. Therefore, I kinda expected him to say something along the lines of “I help where I can but sometimes it’s out of your control”. He responded “I’m a 6’2” 200lb guy. It’s my responsibility to step in. I’m supposed to take the bullet for you guys and help out in general if anything happens. That’s my biological duty as a male.” His answer was funny to me as it combined both his intellectual and emotional thoughts (even if he doesn’t express the emotions well). Haven’t been to China but I have been to many other countries. My husband and I were in Amsterdam. We didn’t realize that the “trams” were stopped at midnight. We were standing in one of the main tourist areas, deciding on what to do, looking for a cab. Just then a lovey, elderly couple from Amsterdam, saw our hesitation. They ask if they could help. We had to make a quick determination that they were not murders. They ended up driving us to our hotel. They were just wonderful people. We were in Paris, had walked 30 miles that day. I have a neurological disease. The subway was packed. One of the young men on that subway, saw me, I must have looked beat. He gave me his seat. I got to use my learned French and tell him “merci beaucoup”. He was so kind. These are the wonderful people I have met around the world. It would be in the Chinese best interest to be more like them.

They made themselves stand out because they are the way they are, then wonder why they can't blend in . . . I have a friend working as a nurse in Saudi Arabia, and she has told me that similar things happens there. She was walking in a shopping mall with her (local) colleague, and a little kid was running around and fell down hard on his face. Her first instinct was to go and help the little kid but her colleague stopped her. The colleague told her to just leave it be because if she goes to help, people might misunderstand that she's kidnapping the kid, and to just let the parents come to their kid instead. My friend was absolutely stunned and horrified by this fact because as a nurse, she has been trained to help people, especially if they're hurt. She reluctantly left with her colleague, leaving the bawling kid behind.

Serpentza - You are right mate, Ive had the same situation happen to me, as you say there are many reasons, one is they are afraid they would or could be sued, i.e. the vase scam, I stopped a woman being beaten by a strong guy and nobody helped but the reason why are a few, people are afraid in China to help, also there is the losing face element, if they turn around and say they dont need help or whatever they are shackled mentally, but they are NOT bad people, as with the abducting kids YES it does happen and people are afraid of these gangs, these guys are criminals and people are afraid to get involved, when I saw this a tear from my eye fell and I had ended up crying cause this does happen, I was super stressed with my kids playing around without myself or my wife around, I seriously thought about somehow microchipping my kids so I can find them quickly if anything like this happened. Winston - people hate you and some love you, but I say to those that HATE him, why? He makes money from his channel, he uses clickbait titles and subjects to generate interest and get you to watch, who doesn't? The question is does what he says actually happen? Is he lying? Well, the answer is no, it is true, I've lived in China longer than Gweilo60, more than Serpentza and the other guys, I was there at the turn of the century 1999/2000 and can tell you that so far what he has said is the truth. Yes, he may overemphasize some things but this is youtube :) One must never forget that there are really great people in China, honest, hardworking people that nobody knows about, with ordinary and some with tragic stories to tell and others wonderful stories, once Winston started talking about politics his goose was cooked, or his time in China was numbered cause you can't do that and get away with it, IM not saying its right or wrong but the way it is. I suspect he had many subjects in his mind to put onto video whilst in China that he could only attempt to upload when he left and I agree that he was probably itching to say many thing but couldnt. Only one question to Winston if he ever reads these comments is this, now that you've left China and free to make these videos, isn't it dangerous for your wifes family as they could be targeted if you know what I mean, and you definitely know what I mean. I mean is it not dangerous you making these videos if it shows China or the Gov in a negative light, dangerous to your wife's family I mean?
