I also moved to China 20 years ago from the West. It's just an amazing country with loving people. I love this country because it represents love and peace. People really care here. I was disillusioned with the West. Just tired of people killing for money and oil. It's not a legacy you can leave for your children. Because you are from the West so the experience is good for you. If you are a foreigner but comes from an Asian or African country with a poorer economy than China, then you will get totally different experience.

John is amazing. He had managed to live through the hard time when China was less developed. He has managed to even bring his family over and have his wife behind him.

Really appreciate the honesty of these gentlemen in exploring the real China through conversation without prejudice. " 一步一步“ should be our motto in life, no matter where we are.

God, i really wish mankind was like that. Able to evaluate things without constantly being affected by prejudice.

Politicians and media in the West are quick to criticize China for anything that is different from their countries and lives. The Chinese people have been struggling with their lives throughout the history. The era from mid 19th Century to just before China was opened up to the world in 1980s saw great changes in China, which were accompanied by intense hardship in the lives of the Chinese people, while the Europeans and Americans were enjoying life. It was mainly the struggles of the Chinese people which have made their country into the China today. The Westerners should understand the background of China before they criticize China which is so much different from their countries.

@Eugene C, Most of the hardship during the late 1800's to mid 1900's were caused by the west and Japan going into China to steal and plunder the country for all of the wealth and natural resources that they could steal as well as kill and subjugate the people to outrageous rules and demands!

Really appreciate open-minded westerners like him who are humble and dedicated, and don't try to impose their ways on the locals, but instead try to work with and around their values. What he said about not experiencing your host country through a western lens is so important - you integrate better into a society if you throw all expectations and preconceived notions out the window and just experience and accept the country for what it is. What's strange is that a lot of non Chinese esp the Western world blindly accept the things published by their media without an iota of effort of confirmation, example the Xinjiang rumours( news??). I only heard a few people complaining but I can't find real solid evidence. People could talk about their sufferings but where's the proof. I can't find any over 2 years of searching!!!

As a Pakistani national we feel very close to China and consider it our second home. I really feel happy that you're running this KZread channel and spreading positivity and truth about China because not many people know about this. I can't wait for my turn, I have been planning to move to China as well hopefully next year I will be able to finally move in there..💞

I attended the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and watched the Pakistani hockey team fight South Africa (or Australia maybe..?) in the field, the whole stadium Chinese audience were supporting our Pakistani friends...That is an unforgettable memory in my life.🙂

This expat is absolutely correct. I really respect him for living in China for 23 years. Hope he has learned and know how to speak Mandarin in his 23 years in China. The young generation people in China are driven to improve and their parents drive them too. They are all hungry to be better. I am a Chinese born second generation in South East Asia (my dad was born in Singapore too) and came to US in early 90s to further my tertiary education. I then started my first job as an expat in US. I have lived in US for almost thirty years. The life in US is comfortable but the spirit of self-driving to be better is always inside of me and my culture. The next generation has to be better than the older generation. My grand parents had either no education or up to elementary education. My parents only graduated with high school level diploma. I obtained degree up to MS in Engineering. My first child is in one of the world top three universities (in US) now doing CS and my second child is on his path to be there too. Chinese people raise and nurture children to be better. Yes, we are indeed a stubborn group and therefore our civilization and culture could exist for 5000 years! Instead of trying to teach and force Chinese to learn the Western way, why wouldn’t the western people understand how the Chinese (in China) could transition and advance so quickly in the last thirty years from a no ATM and coffee shop country to one that has the most advanced infrastructure with high speed trains?!

but they aren't anymore. They don't get married, they don't pursue some ambitious career, they don't want jobs, they are the 'lay flat' generation who don't care about 'driving' anything. They say 'Let it rot' because there is no point to driving, in their hearts and minds. So he's not correct anymore. It's not 2004 anymore.

Frankly I’m not worried of that because they don’t represent the majority. Look at the millions of GaoKao students China has and also the fresh college graduates each year in China looking to fill the job market there. The last I know is the rest of the world is still depending on China’s strong economy momentum. If the young Chinese generation really lay flat, then I need to start worrying that the young generation in the west would be totally in coma! Just in US (if you”ve been around in Silicon Valley area), I am seeing they can’t even step up to produce good quality STEM young bloods here, pretty much rely on the young Asian Americans and absorbing of foreign students or foreign professionals.

@@DrPrag Nobody asked you about your version of the inferior subhumans and failures of 'the west'. The problem is China's youth realize they won't be leaving University to become World Stars. They may not even get assigned a passport to leave. They aren't becoming the heroes or 'showing the West what Chinese can really do!" or any of those things. They won't even be relied upon for 'STEM' by the world that doesn't rely on them or China. This is true for a lot of youth in a whole lot of nations but we're talking about the Mainland Chinese ones. At least one of the problems has been 24 grad students all having a 'face' competition for what should be the work of 4 students. Chinese offices running on 200 people of which 180 sleep and play phone games and 20 Fuer Dai who are terrible at managing anything but egos and 'face' and aren't even good at that. Nobody needs to find the 180 other guilty because they are correct: They will never have any dreams fulfilled, no 'ladder' up the lifestyle rungs, they won't grow a family, build and expand and open up new opportunities by working 12 hrs 7 days or whatever do-nothing highly inefficient go-nowhere long long hours they put in. If Hong Kong of the 70s and 80s still existed then they could and did. If they lived in Taiwan that would still be possible. In Mainland China, in 2022 they figured out they aren't going anywhere based on anything they can do. So they may as well lay down and rest all day and they may as well 'let it rot' since it won't be used anyway. You know this. Don't you? You know this is how it is and will be this way, even more and more as long as the current Dynasty maintains control.

I just love your program of talking to wonderful people about their experiences in China. I was in Shanghai in 1987 when there were essentially no cars in the city. My experience has been a little different, moving to Japan in 1975 to study language, then eventually going on to living and working in Japan for 8 years. It was with a Canadian corporation and eventually my own company. I can TOTALLY relate to you and your guests, with your love of many aspects of living in China and getting to know the people and culture. It must be so transformational for you all. I am 71 and walk around in Japan when I go back with family, see the modern society and just talk to the many open people. Japan is a great society, too.

yes, I am interested. There are many untrue rumours to bad mouth China. China is not perfect and corruption has not been entirely rooted out. But it is not so bad as reported in the western media. There are plain clothes policemen in Xinjiang but definitely no concentration camps to innocent people. There was no genocide as alleged in the western media. Many people in China can enjoy life because the Central Government has been working hard to combat poverty and control inflation, particularly house prices. I am in the position to tell you that I am alright in HK and the National Security Law has no adverse effect on me. I feel sorry that many younsters (especially young students) were aided, abetted and used by the pans democratice camp to violate the law by participating in the violent riots in 2019. In the name of freedom, the rioters took away my freedom by setting fire on MTR and blocking roads. People who disagreed with the rioters were attacked. Those rioters were brainwashed. Students were taught in classrooms that the Nanjing Massacre was an act from the Japanese to save China. In fact, the sufferings of Chinese during the Japanese invasions was comparable to that experienced by the Jews during the Nazi reign. If you have the opportunity to visit the Memorial Hall in Nanjing, you will be shocked by the cruelty of the Japanese armies.

I like these diverse conversations where your guests are very always talk both positive n negative issues they encounter or feel about China.

Speaking of airports, LAX the Los Angeles international airport is so outdated and always in the fix or repair status.

In most N. American cities the airport is just like a larger version of a bus terminal, whereas in many other countries, the airport is their prime attraction and a national pride

I have a story similar to John's .... Things have changed so much .... John rocks.

Great interview. Thank you King Kwesi for your channel. I'm of Chinese descent, but never grew up speaking the language or feeling that connected to the culture. However seeing people like John talk about how their horizons were broadened and of all the change that happened in China gives me a lot of optimism for a better world tomorrow. We need more cultural exchange programs and content like your channel, to combat the negative mainstream media that just seeks to divide people and protect the interests of the elites at any cost. Thanks again!

I moved here 21 years ago although I had been visiting maybe for 7 years before that... Place indeed changed a lot. I was in Beijing in the beginning and remember when there was one Starbuck's in all of China.... At China World. Back then everything was cash indeed although there were ATMs in Beijing. Anyway, good old times. last 2-3 years with covid been a bit different but still the country has modernized so much

Yes China has changed a lot as ad a Chinese living overseas for 20 plus years, I don't recognize my home country anymore.

I fully agree with Mr Chapple that China has changed beyond recognition. My first visit to China was also 23 years ago. I’ve seen the rapid transformation with mu very own eyes. Its definitely awesome & amazing.

I know some people who sold their Beijing homes a few decades ago to move to another more developed country to open a small restaurant. Many years passed by, now looking back they are all super regretful because had they not sold their Beijing homes, now they have become a millionaire without even doing anything. And people who moved to China many years ago to buy properties in big cities must have become very wealthy by now. The question is, will China continue to offer great investment opportunities as it used to be for past 2 decades? I don't think so. Especially in the real estate sector. As infrastructure is already well developed, the economy has reached a point of stabilization, the opportunities have shifted to other developing countries such as Vietnam. That's why I moved back to Vietnam after many years living in China. Wish me luck!

Yes that’s totally true

My first time to Shanghai was 94 in my early teen. Nothing to see, no high building in Pudong that time. No rail, rude people (from my view at least since I grow up in Indonesia with dubbed as one of polite people in the world) but anyway, I visited back in 01 and 02, still nothing impressive. But then I was there to stay in 04 until 12. Then comeback every year just because I missed that place. I am watching Shanghai grows from no line subway to eh… 18 lines? From no ATM into cashless. From nothing into mega super mall everywhere even Starbucks had one of the biggest store in Shanghai. Man, what a development. I hope they open the country soon cause it had been two years and I missed going back to my second home…

They added 2 or 3 more lines now. It's freaking crazy. Jing'an Temple has a third line and they're attaching a cultural structure across the street from the temple right now. It could be completed. I thought it'll be a giant fountain at first.

Excellent video.This is a lovely region of China.Its so refreshing to hear the reality of life there rather than the anti Sino Propaganda spread by the mainstream media in the UK and elsewhere often by journalists that have never even visited this fascinating part of the world.If you get the chance once restrictions are lifted do go but as the video stated Go With an Open Mind!

12:00 is interesting because he's been around so long he's now in the 'Laying Down' social cycle where the young people have no drive, no hopes, no motivation and even say 'Let it Rot' (their ambition). the circle of life I suppose.

Hi John, it is good to listen to your story of living and working in China for 23 years. It is good to travel and broaden one's horizon. There is too much politics in the West, much less in China where everyone just gets on with their business doing the best to look after their families. I have lived in the UK, mainly in London for 52 years, having emigrated from Hong Kong. It took a few months to adjust to the new way of life, but English cuisine still has much to be desired. However, with the influx of Europeans and other foreigners London is one of the best places to live , work and enjoy. What the world wants London can offer, virtually in everything that money can buy. Many English people find London too busy and fast paced. They would rather live in the countryside, many parts of which I have visited by car, not high speed trains. Anyway, it is interesting to listen to other people's life stories and experiences. Thank you for the video.

Many cities in China may be richer and more diverse than those in Britain, but they are safer, more convenient and lower cost of living than those in Britain, BTW, I live in Gloucester, the same place as the interviewee

Very interesting conversation. I will say that people behave the same towards uncommon things/people. When we lived in Germany and had our babies, Germans would come into our space when we were out and about to look at the babies or even try to touch them, and this is without even acknowledging the parents. So it's probably how some human adults react when they see someone that doesn't look like them.

Expat is an exclusive word. If one lives in another country with no intention to leave for a while by any means, then one is an immigrant.

Let me answer you, I'm from Shanghai. I'm in my 40s. In the 1990s, my parents and I lived in a 10-square house. Now, my family has three apartments in Shanghai. By the way, my parents are workers, and my job is sales.
