I doubt he will really find anything too hard to get used to. Online shopping= For food/drinks and so on that you miss from home. (Taobao= You name it... it’s got it) Install the WeChat app to your 📲 Get family/friends to install WeChat 📲 = Video calling/msg/free/anytime (Needed for a lot more than just this... A LOT more). WhatsApp/Facebook and a few others are a no go without VPN (as mentioned in the vid). Google Translate app 📲 (don’t go anywhere without it)= Always helpful. Say it/write it/can even take a photo of a text and it will translate it for you... sooooo useful Can’t think of anything else 🤔 💭

It’s been such an eye opener living in a different country because it’s also made me learn more about my own. A lot of my colleagues lived in the U.K. and it’s so interesting to hear their perspectives and what they found difficult that I take for granted.

I agree with you. People are overly prejudiced against China and they've never even visited the place. I found the people, the culture, the food(!) and the overall experience amazing. I will even go so far as to say that I preferred visiting China to the States!

Nico ... I also find it really annoying how so many Westerners trash China, but they've never been to China. I was blown away by the marvel of China so much so I encouraged my Family and Friends to go. Those that went all concur with me that China is NOT what it is portrayed to be by MS Western Media. I just wish they all STOP this rubbish and just be happy for China and its amazing progress. Let's learn from them and work together.

Yes! I’m so thankful that my parents had been here before and other members of my family so they can appreciate it and why we have stayed for so long. Before we moved here I didn’t even realise there was a different side in the media but I’ve seen it a lot more in the past few years.

Same here, I'm from Philippines, there are so many sinophobic people here despite of having an image of being hospitable to foreigners. Some of our countrymen are not propaganda immune and can easily swayed with Anti-China propaganda, they can't process situations, history and dispute in a logical manner. Even some of my relatives are sinophobic even though we have 1 OFW in Beijing, China living for almost 3 decades.

I took the subway in Shenzhen while working there. The train and stations are spot clean. There’s even a sign that points to a Catholic Church. Just what I saw, no judgment.

This was in 2016 there was a different toilet which was a hole in the ground I think some toilets in China still have this or have different improved toilets

They probably are not paid by the government or told what to say, mostly just way too ignorant about “real” china because their life is way too good here as white upper middle class people without a job… like try working 996 for 5000 rmb or worse in a Chinese office then make a video about how great working and living in China is lol… I saw this as someone who has lived in China for almost 10 years now and love living here, some of those “shills” are just completely ignorant about what China is actually like for the vast majority of people here. They don’t even know tea comes from China lol

As Chinese I agree with you. Every point is fair and accurate.

In Chinese we say, 木秀于林风必摧之, which means if a tree is taller that other trees, it will be the first target of the wind. So, as a Chinese people, the hate to China really dont bother me, we know how China is, it is not perfect, but it is never that bad in the western propaganda..

A lot of Chinese hate the make-up day too and how everything gets overcrowded when everyone gets off on the exact same public holidays. It encourages ppl to make longer vacation plans but at the same time worsens traffic volume peak (vs. spreading the traffic over time). Part of the reason I believe is that PTO is not strictly enforced in a lot of companies yet, it can be difficult to get employer's approval, and most likely unused days cannot roll over to next year. Once PTO becomes a prevailing practice I think there will be not need to set up make-up days anymore, ppl can wisely arrange their own long weekends and holidays. That will help balance the traffic volume and vacation price.

I've been in China for 11 years... for me it's the....NOISE. Construction, car honking, people yelling... It never stops 😂

I hate make up days most. I still remember the make up day firstly appeared many years ago, I literally had the worst and longest week in my life. Using speaker in public is my second most hate thing.

Point12 got me. Hope more positive stuff in this world, flight and travel can be back to the normal level, and we don’t have to be far from the loved ones. Great content.

Yep I am dealing with the admin right now in switching jobs from Beijing to Qingdao. It's a lot of fun. As for the China haters I reckon I have definitely unfriended more folks on fbook over the last 4 years I have been here than I have added. It's got to the point where I don't actually want to visit back home anymore never mind live there again. Oh and Summer... I just got the first mosquito bite of the season yesterday in Gulou. Going to buy Liu Shen today.

before moving to France because of my studies i thought China was the worst at the admin, then I live in France now and I spent a whole year renewing my student residence permit, I think my hometown does not that bad😂 but wherever we are we should enjoy our lives!

Everyone should make the effort to visit China at least once in the their life if they get the opportunity. I did a large 6 week tour with combinations of private guide/driver in some cities and tour groups in others. Plus free days to explore many of the cities. But by far the best way is to come and live in China. I was there during the period I call the Golden years in Shenzhen. The city had a lot of charm and character to it. I left right around the time they started to expand the metro lines into Dongmen. 2009-2011. When I visited in 2019, too much had changed and I wasn't enjoying the experience. Dongmen is awesome now that it has been turned into a modern 步行街 but I felt nostalgic for the dirty crowded place it once was. Even 华强北 looks better done up but it's that grimy, crowded feeling that has gone from there. That said, there are still a lot of areas in Shenzhen that retain that developing look and feel. As for Beijing, I think the city is one of the most liveable in China. I visited again in 2019 and got to experience life in the 胡同. An ordinary one and also a more upmarket private family owned courtyard of 4 residences. Both unique experiences. Even my wife agreed that Beijing is one city that we could easily come to live in for at least 12 months if we had the opportunity. As for the people who claim the propaganda line, pay no attention to them because there is nothing wrong with saying you enjoy living there. I can see why it can be a comfortable place to live. As for the negative sides, it really depends on whether or not you want to focus on the issues of human rights, strict control of the people etc. But the government is one thing, the people are another. The cities are still very liveable and many people are very generous! E.g. Beijing is like many areas of China when it comes to the love of stairs to get to places like the pedestrian overpass or the metro. Not every area has a lift so it became a huge task to carry my son in his pram upstairs. Many times the local Chinese would come and offer to help me carry it up the stairs. Yet the guards near Tiananmen Square just stared at me and refused to even communicate to me. Forcing me to struggle up the stairs before they finally reluctantly came to help. FYI the only way to get into the square is via underground walkway as they've blocked the surrounding streets and force you through a checkpoint entry. That was such an oppressive experience too. When I first visited in 2009, things were more open! Once covid settles, I want to bring my parents to Beijing. There's just so much to see and do there.

Yeah exactly Beijing is always strictly guarded, after all it's the capital of China. And because of the strained relationship between China and others country especially western countries, it strengthens more, which I think it's comprehensible because even in other countries, most of the governments would do like this near the government agencies. However it doesn't influence the kindness of the ordinary people living there, so except the places government agencies locate (Especially Tiananmen Square and the place nearby), Beijing actually has a lot of other enjoyable places to go, you will not regret to go for seeking more for them. Hope you enjoy your trip soon. :D

I can definitely stand in your shoes and feel the same, currently I'm stuck in Canada because of Covid and I missed many great moments like Bday of my close family and weddings of my best friends back home in last 2 years, but like what you said, there's no complaint at all coz we chose this lifestyle and seek more possibilities in our life. Anyway, getting my first shot of vaccine tomorrow and really hope we can end this pandemic anytime soon. Wish you an enjoyable stay in China! 😉

Try incorporating Chinese pop songs (including those from Taiwan and Singapore) into your learning plans. Personally, I would recommend the 'oldies' (1960s to 1990s) as they usually have more proper grammar in their lyrics and much better rhythms. All the best and oh, be thankful (as do millions of other Chinese, I think) that Mandarin (with 'only' 4 tones) is the official language. If history had turned out the other way, it would have been Cantonese (with SIX tones), haha. Now, THAT would have been fun.

Great video, thanks Nico. Whilst I have not lived in China, I have visited a few times, so I can relate to some of what you are saying. Where I live (Austrralia), the media bias is pretty obvious as well.

With the development of take-out food, many riders are scurrying on the road, and the lack of planning by the transportation bureau has caused some confusion for pedestrians.

About he commutation one. Even I have lived in china as a child, and I do speak and read mandarin. I have a very hard time doing tasks such as filling out an official form. Because I don't know the proper terms and sometimes I cannot understand the instructions because they are written in the convoluted and official tune/ language. Definitely feel you on this.

For me it was things I craved that were unavailable. Cheese, good bread, canned tuna, ovens, Dr Pepper, screened windows, clothing dryers. Now that I am home there is far more that I miss about China. Especially, cheep beer, excellent public transportation, the variety of fruits and vegetables, the many cafeterias, and just feeling competent and capable in a foreign culture on the other side of the world. That's not a feeling I can get searching the isles of Target.

Yes I totally agree there are things that I miss but you can get most things here even if they are a bit expensive. But I know I will miss a lot more if we move back.

The work weekends mess up my routine and make me even more tired than I usually am😭. However, I do appreciate the fact that we usually have more than one day off (especially the National Holiday in October )

China gets FAR too much hate these days (Some of the questions I get asked about China when home🇬🇧 or gaming online are ridiculous 🤦🏻‍♂️🤷‍♂️...) I LOve ❤️ living here🇨🇳 for SO many reasons. (People,transportation,architecture,food and so on and so on and so on). Not all perfect though (Seriously... Can you name one place that is?) 🎺🚗🚕🚓🚙🚑🚌🚒🚛 The noise/the traffic and the noise from the traffic 🤬🤫🤦🏻‍♂️... These are the things that still get to me most🤫🤫🤫. Having people point at you saying “Laowai” (informal term or slang for ‘foreigner’) can be a little annoying sometimes too... I was a bit nervous to release this as I didn’t want people to get the wrong idea but that’s the thing most people are pretty understanding and there is good and bad everywhere. Like you say the good out ways the bad! I’m sure when the video gets spread out more I will receive more hate comments but I’ve been pretty surprised so far!

Traveling on national holidays is literally a disaster for anyone… skip holidays…

Great video, most of the points you've covered can definitely be shared with other Chinese people. Admin could be a pain in the neck even for many Chinese. For public holidays, I would just stay home not going anywhere unless I have to ---- It is just gonna be people mountain people sea! If your company could allow you to work on public holidays and get you extra days off on regular days, grab it! Btw, in the UK at the moment where it is 15 deg outside, blowing and raining hard....wanna a swap? The only thing is......you miss British food while being in China? OK :)

To be honest sometimes the makeup days aim to help some of the tourists get enough time to travel more further😂, because most of the people in China are living in the East and South, so a one-day holiday even coming with a weekend is still hard to achieve a long trip to West or North.😅 The makeup days this year are a little bit different and even longer due to the influence of pandemic last year.🥲 So it will come back to normal soon~

I'm Romanian and I've been living in Spain for almost three years now. I'm here with my mom, but as it's really far from my home country it gets kind of depresing at times. All my close familly and my friends all there, and we kind of forget each other at times, friendships were lost cuz of how much we've changed, and there are new familly members who don't even know I exist. I miss the food, the culture, especially the spring apple bloom. But don't get me wrong, I love Spain, everything about it, but sometimes I wish I could go home more often.

I agree with the preconceptions sentiment and that the majority of people that have never been to China say and think the worst. I went to China with no expectations or any proper research and I loved it. I had to adapt to their way of life which in some ways are so much better. Traveling can be long yet I love the overnight train which makes so much sense. I never understood the make up day and still don’t. Admin can be a nightmare but I love that the local government knows who is in their city. What I disliked was the need for that ‘proper American accent’ as I’m a South African who obviously doesn’t sound American so initially I had some struggles which affected me so badly. I got over it but it was hard going through it.

Yes the accent thing can be frustrating even people in China have different accents so obviously people from other English speaking countries have different accents too 🤦‍♀️ I hate having to use American words instead of British as it feels so weird to me haha

You are not alone my mainland Chinese friends hate the holidays and the make up days=)) They normally take vacation only if they can travel aboard, absolutely not domestic.

Nothing is perfect You will love something and hate something. As long as you are happy and You will learn more when bad things happens

That is also why I like spending my annual leave in autumn😁

I've never perceived China as a bad place. I would love to live there. I visited Shanghai and was blown away by how different it was compared to how media depicted it.

I m born in the 60s and grew up in the 70s, no social media, no computers, cars don't make annoying sound when you don't put on seat belt! And no phone! No worries, no problem, care free.

Chinese grammar is easier than English. English pronunciation is harder than Chinese, with the acrobatic tongue movement

if we forget about the scripts of Chinese, the only part which is a little difficult is the tones. basically, there is nearly none of grammar in morden Chinese. the only grammar is the order of words.

I think the most difficult part in learning Chinese is that Chinese we’re speaking today consists of ancient Chinese and modern Chinese, sometimes it’s really hard to translate ancient Chinese into English and the gramma is different with modern Chinese as well.

@@hengwang8942 What you mentioned about “ancient”, I have different perspective on this. I see Chinese language is far more ahead in language evolution to much higher level which a meaning or feeling can be expressed effectively with lesser words/scripts. For instance, Chengyu 成语 ~ 4 characters or a short phrase tells a hundred word story by meaning.

surely, mandarin is so much easier to learn than English as a global language. proof is many foreign learners of mandarin can have a level of proficiency and fluently after only 4 to 6 years of study.

Most of the haters probably don't know a thing about China. They have never been to China or studied anything about China.

Nico, an encouragement 🐁 the reasons why haters hate because their lives are terrible and not that great… You have a better life so they are jealous so they start to harm you and so on They are usually the ones who will commit crimes then end up in jail So enjoy your life and smile more (: which I see you are quite happy, very peaceful, innocent and nearly perfectly harmless (: You have so much good qualities!

That’s why I hate that my kids are fed with fake news or infos about places or countries that are not allies of the state, it would change the way they see the other side of the world which is dangerous for them by not knowing the truth and how to deal with other ppl.

Is it possible to work on public holidays and take time off on working days?

I get you, I am on my fifth year here in Xi'an. It's tough being so far from home dealing with a lot of stuff because of Covid... But I have met many kind people who sometimes make it all worth it, like my Chinese hubby.

I can imagine how you feel just like my ancestor migrate to another country in the early 1900, no phone, tv, radio, no language school and mail take ages to get across it's a mental torture but we'll have to take everything with a pinch of salt yea, cheer up :)

I'm from Beijing and I can't even bother to try to drive in Beijing 😑 the cars, bikes and pedestrians... driving in the rural US is so less crowded and easy for me. Great video!

China has a population more than 4 times USA's.

admin is also a problem for local ppl (too much paperwork). But I know it might be more complex for foreigners since my teacher at university has to go to immigration office to renew her work visa in person and quite often (luckily she has the staff from uni to help her throughout the whole process).

as a city boy borned in china，holiday is always better to just stay at home，never travel with the crowd is a wise choise

What camera and lens did u use in your studio？

Well, most parts of China are in Monsoon Climate of Medium Latitudes, which means, they have 4 distinctive seasons (temperature, rainfall). Autumn is perhaps the best season for travelling in most parts of China.

Just as you said, traveling in China is not so easy due to the size of the land, that’s why there are “make up days“ for the public holiday. So that people can have time to travel to another province.

This is all so true XD I love living in China but these things get to me as well.

I am American and I like everything, everywhere in America are amazed but what I don’t like in America are the people who very self-centered and they don’t give a f to destroy whatever they don’t like or conflict with other people’s business. Since 2021, break news everywhere everyday.

I'm Chinese and I aggree with you most of points. I hate to travel during national holidays in China, actually it's already much less crowded than before but still too crowded, that's why most youth will prefer overseas travel during holidays, and I found that Darwin Paris is so few people even Tokyo is not that crowded level like China at all, So I will always aviod to travel during holidays, I also hate traffic on road, even it's also much better than 5 years ago, but it's still busy or chaotic if comparing to Europe, China will keep upgrading its infrastructure in future, I hope traveling China can be less crowded like in Europe in next decade,
