They do have AEDs on airplanes but if the heart is not in a shockable rhythm, not much ya can do except chest compressions and ventilate.
@sevegoodhouse

Its FAA requirement to have atleast one full medkit, AED. But for a plane like the tripple 7 its probably multiple. I would say atleast two per section.
This is so sad and Christmas Eve makes it even worse. For there family Christmas Eve is not a happy time anymore now it's just a horrible time. RIP

At 0:54 the unreadable is "vitals on the child" it means there was no vital signs of life on the child I.e. No pulse, heart Rythym and/or not breathing 😕😔 rest in peace.

Freakschwimmer GCS or Glasgow Coma Scale is used for brain injuries I do believe this young girl had a heart issue though I maybe wrong
@Freakschwimmer
7 жыл бұрын
@TheDadace GCS is "to give a reliable and objective way of recording the *conscious state* of a person" [Wikipedia] It's not limited to brain injuries per se, but rather used in any case where the patient's conscience may be impeded: Brain/head injury? -> use GCS Small cut on hand? -> youre Brain, Lungs and heart are allright, no GCS needed [basically a GCS of 15] PS: What I was trying to say is: GCS is always usefull for Head/brain Injuries and ANY sufficiently bad injury or anytime a person is close to loosing conscience.

Well done to both the pilot and the ATC, for holding it together and remaining professional to the end. Rip to the little girl. So sad 😔
The aircrew and ATC performed superbly in this situation.
I was working the day the aircraft came in. although we didn't know what the emergency was until the girl was at the hospital where it was announced to us at the airport that she had died. I just remember a feeling of pure disbelief it was truly a saddening story and my thoughts are with her family.

Oh dear, so sad to hear. So hard on family also. Well done to Shannon ATC and Air Canada for their best endeavours.
I’m ten too and the thought of someone dying at this age gives me shivers. God bless her and her family and her friends. Imagine how her friends felt when they received this horrible news. My heart is broken, I hope the tragic event does not happen to anyone else, no matter what age they are. 💔💔💔

I was on this flight, we were on the ground for just over a hour then we went onward to Heathrow which took less then a hour. RIP to the girl.

CAHSR2020 a bizarre statement? you don't get out much right? That is a perfectly normal response to the situation. Every Christmas from now on will be filled with memories of what happened. Christmas is a time for happiness and family fun times not sorrow over the death of a beloved child.

You really think that a Christmas holiday has any impact on the family in this situation? Their world just ended.
How heartbreaking! Rest in peace.
Fine effort on the part of the pilots and ATC, what a shame the little girl passed away. May she rest in peace.
It is extremely rare for young children to encounter a cardiac arrest, unless she had a severe infection before flying or some complex medical condition,the only other medical issues to cause this would be anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction) or Airway obstruction (choking/asthma) which can quickly lead to respiratory arrest in children followed by cardiac arrest. R.I.P.
@pyrrhogaster

It was reported that she had sickle cell anemia and it wouldn't be unheard-of for the stresses of flying to bring on a sickle-cell crisis.

Alan, children who have underlying cardiac issues, eg WPW, can get into a cardiac arrhythmia, especially when they get their heart rate up high, which is possible with all the excitement of getting onto a plane.

@nonemongo

not supposed to comfort anyone. there's no hospital in a plane, if you're aware of your child being vulnerable to such things you might want to rethink putting them on a plane that flies over the ocean. worst case something happens hours away from land, what kind of parent would take such a risk?
@m.s.l.7746

GrumbleSnatch like I said, you don't know the situation... Your just assuming she knew the exact risks & disregarded them. Not to mention lots of other factors... So don't assume she was negligent.
I bet everyone involved worked their asses off and cleared so much traffic in the air and on the ground to get that to the stand as quick as possible. Such a shame she didn't survive :(
Well this has made me think twice about life, those last words are heartbreaking and so sad to hear, thank you Air Canada for trying your best and I send wishes to the family that they've gotten on well.

Emphasis on 'May'. Who knows if it's safe to use one onboard of a tin can. And airlines probably do not want that extra weight on their plane . I agree with you that something should be done, but some work will probably have to be done by the airlines to sort something out.

Every year for Part 121 (airline & regional jet) pilots and every two years for part 61/ 91 (general aviation) pilots. Mostly the jet pilots rehearse mechanical issues - descend to 10k ft (decompression), fuel starvation or one-engine out - but sometimes will do simulated medical emergencies.
Ah.. Sad to hear she didn't make it.. But respect for everyone involved for trying their best and staying professional.

I remember this appearing in the news on December 25th 2016: I myself was in hospital recovering from sepsis for two weeks but a friend of mine was monitoring ACA868 on Flight Radar 24 as this unfolded. Boeing 787-9 C-FGFZ was assigned to this particular flight. RIP.

RIP rest in peace on crismas eve wow! that shouldn't have happeded. they did there best and thats all the matters Hopes go out to this family
How does a 10-year-old child go into cardiac arrest?? That poor child and the poor family. I can't imagine what they must have gone through. It must have been very difficult for the Air Canada crew as well. RIP small one.

She sadly had a genetic disorder called sickle cell anemia. In people with this, the deformed red blood cells can clump together and act like a clot. This can cause a heart attack, stroke, or pulmonary embolism even in a young, otherwise fit and healthy child.

Just FYI, but @ about 1:04 at the end, ATC actually says "so the crews can get on the quickest way" [instead of ''get on quick without delay"].
How do you know what ATC to listen to like i know you use that website but how do you pick what your gonna listen to on that day? Also great videos :)

my experiance having medical issues during a flight was one of neglect, i actually was left in the terminal post offloading for 3 hours waiting for a commissionaire while i was dying of an infection. they were even quick to board passengers bound for bejing right through me. my advice? choose any other airline

Just wanna say that the flight crew on Air Canada 868 did a great job & tryin their best to land in time before she passed. Sometimes, we can’t do anything. I think what ever Flight 868 was, that plane should have the person’s name who died in her memory.
Sad, very sad.
