    Check off this experience for the first officer as a lesson learned. You could hear it in her voice that she wasn't sure, but kept her composure. I think she did an excellent job of handling it, and i would love to see the people criticizing her in the comments in the same position.

    Actually it's safer to make a hard landing. Greasing landings is a very bad practice. People get used to doing it, and then they can't land safely in contaminated or short runways. There's a captain in my company that makes you buy drinks for the crew if you do a super smooth landing ahead of the TDZ.

  • @UberDude

    @UberDude

    7 жыл бұрын

    palonazo you're saying that it's safer to do a hard landing while overweight and with lithium batteries on board? I think you'd be lucky to keep the plane in one piece.

  • @palonazo

    @palonazo

    7 жыл бұрын

    UberDude As a matter of fact, I fly cargo and we have authorization for dangerous goods. Most airplanes cannot carry batteries unless they're part of the device that use them. That is, they can carry ipads, but not batteries, because they're what we call CAO items (cargo airplane only), and apart from that you need to be authorized for dangerous goods. The problem with batteries is not how you move them around, but faults in their construction. In case we carry them, we'd have a drill code that would let firefighters know that they should use water to put out the battery fire, instead of foam. Now, the other thing, "hard landing" is a very specific term. Not all firm landings register as "hard landings" as per FDM (flight data monitoring) values. When we did our base check, you woulnd't believe how shitty our first landings were. I was very scared because it felt like the airplane was going to break. They had to change one tire after the 18 landings the three of us did. Still, none of those incredibly hard landings registered in FDM as "hard landings" and required non maintenance other than the tire. What I'm saying is that a safe landing is that which is done "positively" right on the TDZ instead of doing a long flare to achieve an unnoticeable contact with the ground. That is the only way that the landing distance calculations agree with the actual landing.

    She spoke S-L-O-W-L-Y and had trouble understanding multiple commands which indicates she wasn't focused on the task (radio communications) and likely thinking of multiple things at once. That's dangerous because that's when you make mistakes. Instead you're trained repeatedly to prioritize tasks then do each task sequentially with 100% focus on that task. She was clearly having trouble with that in parts.

  • @brianweltman5542

    "Declaring an emergency" is like a police car with its lights on... the plane doesnt need to follow normal speed and procedure rules, it gets priority to land over any other planes, other air traffic is diverted to get out of the way, so the emergency plane can land as safely and quickly as possible. As for the woman pilot...she is piloting a huge airplane with tons of explosive fuel, in an overweight condition, flying faster than normal to get back the the gate, doing an extensive safety checklist needed for every landing. Pilots are trained that priority ONE is fly the plane, the last is communicate. She did great with flying the plane, handling a very dangerous situation, and landing safely. And given that she was still able to talk as well as was done is a testament to her skill and training. For the non-pilots...this isn't like driving a car and chatting on the phone! Increase the mental workload and stress by a factor of a thousand and and you may have some understanding. BTW, most people that try to become pilots are men. And of all those that are disciplined enough to try, still less than only 20% make it to get their private pilot license. She is a pilot and part of an elite and highly trained group of people - commercial pilots!

    People don't realize just how fast things happen in the air, especially when flying a fast jet. I only have a private ticket without any endorsements, so I've never flown anything like the aircraft in the video. However I've had the opportunity to fly a 737 sim and it's unbelievable how quickly things can get out of hand. I remember one flight where I overshot the VOR simply because I turned too late, and I turned too late because I was busy trying to make sure I had the AP set properly. It's not the flying that's hard, that's the easy part. It's managing the ridiculously complex systems all while moving VERY fast trying to make sure it all happens in perfect unison while hundreds of other pilots around you are doing the same thing.

    this sorta happened to me once as a passenger on a commercial flight out of O'Hare. We were notified on climb out that we were returning to land due to a "security issue" (pre 9/11 so no one really wigged out). Once we hit the gate everyone was unloaded and we sat there for a couple of hours, never saw anything happen and never did get any word on what the hell was going on either. Loaded back up and headed out minus a long delay sitting in the boarding area. meh

    Benjamin Rapp I'm a professional pilot and we go through recurrent training every year for exactly these types of situations. The pilot not flying is the one making the radio calls and besides fumbling through the QRH at the request of the PF, there really isn't all that much to do unless you're trying to copy a full route clearance or you have avionics or systems failures on final in IMC. Her radio work is piss poor and the reason she is at American is most likely due to filling a quota. There are plenty of competent female professional pilots but she is not one of them. Radio work is aviation 101.

    Paul Fejervary planes weight can be really hard on the landing gear. Normally much of the fuel would be burned during the flight making the plane much lighter. The pilot was notifiomg the tower that they were landing heavier than normal. The tower responded asking if they wanted to burn off more fuel, which could take hours if they don't dump fuel. Fun fact some Air Force aircraft are so overweight they don't have enough power to get off the ground on certain runway. They do a JATO (jet assisted take off) by strapping on rockets to boost them up to take off velocity.

    I did find a longer audio recording of the ATC transmissions for this and not much continues beyond that in the video.. there's a lot of banter between control and several other flights, then a small bit from AAL2405.. Jetblue 1654: "I see a Helicopter at.. ahh.. South *; is that him?" *(unclear word; sounds like 10 or tent?) Control: "1654 Roger" AAL2405?: "And they told us to plan on the right side." (Possibly AAL2405; this audio did not end in the flight number like it should have, all I know is it was a female voice) Control: "Park heavy on the sun heading at your given." so from the sound of it, there was a police chopper and seems like action was taken on the tarmac instead of inside the terminal/gate.. which again raises the question how no one picked up on this story or even reported on it.. If anyone's interested, the recordings are dated as being from May 10th, 2017.. hopefully the internet can find out more on this..

    jean bon the flight was just taking off for overseas so it would have been while waiting for the flight. I was hoping to find out more about this incident from comments.

    In theory, it's regarded as "Wilco" (Will comply). You'll notice in these communications, they always go straight to the point as briefly as possible. No sarcasm, no "wtf ?", nothing except the Order/Recommendation and the Callback. I understand your point and I could be wrong. But this is the ATC and a pilot, not a teenager sassing his mom :D

    I know this wasn't a kidnapping. But I can't think of a worse place to kidnap a person than a commercial flight
