Chicago Style Eats - Episode 0109 - Chicago Hot Dog

A hot dog is only a hot dog until you drag it through the garden, and then it becomes a Chicago Hot Dog! While the Chicago Dog's story is stitched tightly into the city's rich ethnic tapestry, it is unknown who first took the peculiar mix of all-beef wiener, yellow mustard, fresh chopped onions, picalilly relish, tomato wedges, a pickle spear, sport peppers, and celery salt and jammed them into a steamed poppyseed bun. But the city's collective taste buds decided THAT is the flavor of Chicago's representative in the roster of iconic hot dogs of the world. And NO KETCHUP! You do NOT want your Chicago Dog privileges revoked!

Back in the day, 1950's & 60's we had a place called Al's Vienna's Hotdogs under the L ,around Lake & California Street ( West Side, deep in the Hood)..Than it was just the yellow mustard , relish, & sports peppers...No fancy smancy, Garden hot dogs..It was not until the 70's, I believe that I had a Drag Thru The Garden ,Chicago style hot dog ,which was on the North Side..So I always associated that style Chicago Vienna's hot dog, with the more upscale section of Chicago, which now has become the hot dog known around the world.. But a Good Old Al's hot dog under the L is good enough for me...

Thank you for sharing your memories, here! I love this little slice of Chicago cultural history told from the street level! Do you know, or at least suppose, if Al’s Vienna Hot Dogs is connected to Al’s Beef, the Italian beef shops that dot the city and suburbs? Thank you for watching and for participating with our little show!

@@ChicagoStyleEats-rz2rc Great question. A couple of months ago I did a search on the history of Vienna hot dogs of Chicago..Because ,I'm thinking about buying some & Polish hot dogs(box set) later this year for my birthday..because I know longer live in Chicago.Came across, some great information about different vendors of the Vienna dogs of the past & now..Found this..The dog at Al's in East Garfield Park is simply dressed with mustard ,relish ,onions & sports peppers..Al's Under The L 2908 W.Lake street. Before it was called Als under the L ,going back to 1949 a Jewish guy named Al slinging red hots cheeseburgers & Polish sausage out of a trailer at Lake & Francisco ,said current owner Larry McCullum .Al's has been a fixture in the East Garfield Park for as long as neighbors can remember (self included).Nothing fancy ,though just a stand-up counter & a window where you paid.Hot dogs$ 3.35 .How was it dressed Mustard ,relish onions, sport peppers..Just as I remembered as a kid & teenager

@@roberth2627The hot dog you describe from Al's Vienna Hot Dogs (mustard, relish, onions, and sport peppers) is the same ingredients list as the Depression Dog, except the Depression Dog sausage is a red hot insttead of a Vienna all-beef wiener. Keep your eyes open for episode 111....

No shade to the sport peppers! I just don’t do spicy hot. I’ll make a deal with you… I’ll order it without the peppers which leaves more for you! Thanks for watching and for the comment. We love it!

@@ChicagoStyleEats-rz2rc That's a fair trade ;). Every time I visit home (Crystal Lake, IL) I have to stock up on them because they don't sell them near me. Your video inspired me to make a couple dogs today, and I made sure to add extra sport peppers. Cheers!
