Cheater's Guide to RAM Overclocking - Easy Frequency Boost

Ғылым және технология

Overclocking memory can be a painstaking process, with manually setting and individually testing specific timings. Or, you can set voltage, set your frequency, and let the motherboard do the rest. Wow, I'm gonna have to pin this due to some misleading comments here. This method WILL improve your performance. That said, you should always run some tests to make sure. It is true that loose timings in certain programs can lower performance. I tended to see an increase overall though. Follow the link to see some testing results I wished I had included in this video. www.hwhound.com/ram/ballistix-tactical-tracer-rgb-ram-review/#Aida64_Testing Update: This video is in context with 2nd gen Ryzen. Based on others content, tight timings are much more preferable with Ryzen 3rd gen. I intend to do a cheater's guide to timings soon, and possibly a guide to Ryzen DRAM Calculator if time permits.

    I have a problem, and maybe you have the solution. I can't get my RAM to work past 1600 Mhz, yet it is rated for 2133 Mhz 4 Dimm 32 GB, 8 GB each. My motherboard says it can overclock to 2000 Mhz on RAM, but when I go into BIOS, I can't get it to show 2000 Mhz option. It only shows 1600, 1866, and 2133 Mhz. Problem is, it's stuck at 1600, and won't even boot properly when I set it to 1866 Mhz. Should I increase the voltage, bit by bit, and will that allow to me run at 1866 Mhz ? What do I do to get the 2000 Mhz option to appear ? I'm working with a Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 Motherboard. If you want, I can upload a KZread video, and have you check that out, if it would help ? @HardwareHounds #HardwareHounds

  • @casmx7300
    @casmx73005 жыл бұрын

    I highly recommend anyone doing this to run benchmarks to make sure they're actually getting a performance increase. The reason is because when you let the mobo set the latency CAS by leaving it at AUTO, then it'll push your CAS to stupid numbers. I mean sure, you might be able to push your 2666 mhz to 3400 mhz but that nice 16 CAS you were sporting probably jumped up to something ridiculous. Doesn't do much good if your CL, Trcd, Trp etc are in their 30s. There's a good chance you're actually killing your performance. What you can do however is do what is suggested here, up your voltage, up your frequency and leave everything at AUTO and then run CPU-Z to find out what timings the board set your sticks at, then go back into the bios and manually set those numbers, then start bringing them down bit by bit to see if you actually can get a performance boost to run stable. Remember to run benchmarks to compare actual performance between settings. Otherwise, you're just guessing and making assumptions when the reality is, you might actually be making things slower/worse. Edit: To pull an example from this video, for his memory to achieve approx the same performance as his stock (non-overclocked) settings at a frequency of 3400hz, his CAS would have to be at minimum, CAS 22. It's a shame he didn't run CPU-Z because I'd be willing to bet his mobo set his CAS closer to 28-30+. I mean, nobody is going to buy 3400mhz memory when their clock numbers are 32,34,34,68. My advice for "simple" overclocking is to up the voltage by about 0.15 (or even 0.10 if you're running cheapish RAM. It's always better to err on the side of caution when you're uncertain), leave your frequency alone, go into your timings, lowering each of them by 1 and reducing your tRAS by about 2 or 3 and then check for stability. If you can load into Windows, that's a pretty good sign. If it's stable after running a stress test for a decent amount of time (I prefer Prime95 for about an hour but OCCT is probably okay too), you have a successful OC that'll actually be a performance increase. Now you could stop there and call it good but if you want to try to squeeze more out of your memory, you can start tightening the clocks one at a time (Starting with your CAS then going down the line one at a time) until you find a setting that's unstable, then go back to the last bootable setting and stress test for stability. Whenever it's unstable, simply back up to the previous setting and test again, backtracking until you find the most stable setting. Eventually, you'll find that sweet spot at which point you'll be successfully overclocked with an actual performance increase. Now if you want to OC your memory to the absolute best performance, you'll probably eventually have to mess with boosting the frequency but at that point, things get way more complicated. Simply leaving things at AUTO is not likely going to net you any extra performance (and more likely lose you some). This is why for beginners, I suggest leaving your frequency alone, up your voltage a bit and see how much you can tighten your timings. I hope this helps.

    Wow this helped me overclock my ram. Setting it to auto it is just as you said. The first CL number is NOT affected but all other number after that become 20+ Now after manually set it, I get real performance boost. (by using the number from a person who have the same ram) I'm able to push my corsair 2666mhz to 3000mhz and with cl timing of 16 17 17 35

    @@adrian2736 No, take a look at your tRCD, tRP, tRAS, tRC too. First get xmp to profile 1 and screen cap the default value in cpu z. Then you can adjust the timing as the OP said.

  • @casmx7300

    @casmx7300

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@adrian2736 Every motherboard will be different but strictly speaking, simply increasing the voltage and the frequency a bit but leaving everything else on AUTO will not be an actual performance increase. When set to AUTO, the motherboard loosens the timings to compensate for the higher frequency and will usually overcompensate to ensure a stable run, resulting in slower overall performance. Now I'm not going to suggest I'm any kind of expert or anything and there may be boards out there designed to overclock exactly the way this video is suggesting. I simply don't know. That's why I recommend running benchmarks, checking timings with CPU-Z etc. Don't make any assumptions, it's always in your best interest to run benchmarks to verify that your overclock is actually giving your a performance boost and to run stresstests to verify your overclock is stable.

    What he didn't say was it will dial back the speed and timing until it finds something stable and can often be extremely conservative, possibly hurting your performance. Which is why you should take notes, if you're doing it this way, when the BIOS finds something stable and manually tweak timings and frequency. Yes, it can be extremely time consuming. But that's memory overclocking. It's the biggest bitch of all typical hardware overclocking. Also, run something like AIDA64 memory benchmark to see if your overclocking is gaining you any noticeable performance. If it's not, it's often times better to just stick to your memory's rated speeds for stability's sake. You're often times going to be better off either tightening timings at your rated speed or bumping up frequency at your rated timings, in both cases until you lose stability. AIDA also has memory stress tests, Intel Extreme Tuning Utility does as well and Prime95. Always stress test your overclock, if it crashes during the stress test, it's not stable and it's going to cause problems. The length of the stress test is up for debate. If it's good for a couple hours, usually it will be stable. But not always.

    GUYS if your ram doesnt want to go to 3200 mhz just set the dram voltage to 1.40 (optional) and then set the "system memory multiplier" to 31 it will automatically set itself to 3133 mhz. Yup thats it took me over 31 hours to figure this out mostly because i couldnt find the fix. XMP is not needed when you set it to 3133

    Decent video, but it's not recommended to leave your timings set to "Auto," as they'll get set to something high, most likely. Set the voltage to "1.35," select your desired speed (for example: 3200 MHz), and find timings that work. For example: 16-18-18-38.

    Every processor has its maximum theoretical memory bandwidth. For example yours has 50 GBit/s. Then if you have dual channel memory, let's calculate. 50/8=6.25GBytes/s. 6.25/2=3.125=3125 Mbytes/s. If your processors bandwith is 50, you can use 3125 memory in dual channel mode. Or 2100 memory in tripple channle mode. Everything depends on your processor. Dont initiate XMP in BIOS before calculating what I wrote above. Your system will not be stable otherwise.

    when you OC the Ram on an AMD board. (if its a Samsung E-die) you can do it in 3 different ways. since AMD CPU's handle memory in a totally different concept than Intel. 1 Don't buy ram less than 3000Mhz. for Ryzen 2nd gen 2 you can choose from the multiplayer. either 32 with XMP. or (3266 without XMP) 3 the 3rd option if you have standard Ram which in most cases is more geared towards Intel then don't use XMP. but then you will need a Ram calculator. and then you will need to enter the values manually .this option is not suitable for most people. keep in mind that AMD CPU's are memory sensitive. AMD controls memory completely differently than Intel. (the memory controller is built into the CPU) if you own a 3000Mhz or above No Need for OC at all. all you're doing is killing your chipset. and run into all kind of issues, at least with X370 B450 and X470. in a month or 2, the new B550 and X580 motherboards coming out. that will eliminate the memory compatibility. don't expect these New X580 to be cheap. they won't be. starting price will be at least 300$ the chipset will NO longer be made by Asmedia. it's made by AMD. with fan cooler

    No. This kind of OC is more for speed of Start Up, and opening programs. You could see a little bump in FPS, but not enough to say it is beneficial to gaming. On a side note though, this could also speed up your Games latency (NOT internet Ping Latency). So your in game actions could be a little more in time with the games data transfers to your system.

    thanks for the tips even though i have an ASSrock board. What i do with my ram is test with VR apps. Opening SteamVR instantly starts stuttering if im not 100% stable. You can test with steamVR performance test it steam tools if you dont have a VR setup. It works for fine tuning but not to force BSODs. I got my cruxial ballistix 2400 cl16 running at 3133 cl 17. 3200 drops performance off a cliff but sometimes boots. I dont know what it is with my asrock x470 gaming k4 but it likes to decide my ram timings are bad only after tons of testing. I figure its cause the ram is micron and not samsung or hynix but my friend has the same ram same board only he has a 2600x and i have a 2700x and i couldn't get his higher than 2666 stable so with that to compare im happy at least getting to 3133 but im still going to try and push it higher
