We explore Charleston, South Carolina, an old city in the original 13 colonies dating back to 1670 with a long history tied to being a major slave trading port. We got to know historic downtown and neighboring islands and experienced Southern culture, largely influenced by the African American population known as the Gullah Geece. It's important to note slaves were sold in every part of the city, on streets, in alleys, in buildings when the law to only sell slaves indoor was passed: bodies were buried deep underground and have been covered over by landfill. The city's wealth and what you see today as a beautiful, affluent city was built figuratively and physically by the enslaved (the bricks of Charleston were literally built at Boone Hall Plantation).
