Chapter 3 Part 3. From England to Tonga: A Stranger's Remarkable Experience Revealed

In 1806 William Mariner stopped off in Tonga in the Ha'apai Islands where most of the adults on his ship were slaughtered by the natives. He becomes adopted by the King Chief and General of Tonga and raised by the youngest wife of that King, Finau 'Ulukalala, a native of Ha'apai. This is his story.

This isn't in Mariner's book but Tuku'aho, Vuna who is my ancestor and 'Ulukalala II are all closely related. The Vuna that Mariner met is Vuna Takitakimalohi from the Vuna Line who were the original Tu'i Vava'u and was the last of his line and was also the half brother of 'Ulukalala II sharing the same mother, 'Ulukilupetea. Which also makes Vuna and Tupouto'a half brothers as well but not to spoil anything, I'll keep it at that. 'Ulukalala II and Vuna are 4th cousins with Tuku'aho sharing the same great great grandfather Mataeletu'apiko who was the 3rd Tu'i Kanokupolu. I guess apparently one cousin was just probably closer to the one than the other. As we know though, during that era it was all about power, politics and warfare. 'Ulukalala II is in the annals of Tongan history for a reason, my man was ruthless when he needed to be.

If I remember right 'Ulukilupetea was the mother of Tokemoana who sired Tupou 'uluaki? Meaning that Taufa'ahau had the combined dynastic lines in him? In other words he was kind of like the Tongan version of the Samoan Salamasina who also carried in her all of the dynastic lines of Samoa, including the Tu'i Tonga.

If I understand you correctly, technically most if not all of the Tu'i Kanokupolu line had all 3 dynasty bloodlines- not just Taufa 'Ahau - Tu'i Tonga, Tu'i Ha'atakalaua and of course TK. Yes, the eldest son of 'Ulukilupetea to Tokemoana Toutaitokotaha was Tokemoana Toutai. Her 4th son was to Tuku'aho who was the 14th TK, Tupouto'a who became the 17th TK. Tupoto'a was the father of Taufa'ahau aka Tupou I who became the 19th TK.
