    Re dowry, it is common throughout Many cultures in Oceania. A story I heard in Samoa, once a Fijian king travelled to Samoa and he fell in love with a Samoan girl and wanted to marry her, but he saw how the people of the village lived, with no mats and their homes were very bare, so he went back to Fiji and brought back mats and tapa and furnished his bride to be's home, and that apparently, is how our tradition of giving dowry, fine mats etc for our brides. It's not from Europeans.

    In Samoa, they also had these competitions held at special malae, fields that were large ovals where villages would come to participate in the spectacle to watch young warriors fight each other with clubs made of a coconut branch/leaf or lapalapa - I think, anyway there are some famous warriors from these battle games. I read somewhere that some of these battles were done blind folded. Crazy.

    Mahoa, in Samoa we call it Masoa, it is starch from a palm tree trunk, like Sago, white colour, you have to scrape it, pound it and prepare it before cooking it to make like a cake or we call it faapapa, it has coconut, ripe bananas, chestnuts, sometimes with pawpaw, esi, coconut flesh and sugar. Very nice.

    I thought I read somewhere Tuku’aho held the title of Tu’i Kanokupolu… 🤔 and if that’s true you think that title would’ve been passed down to Tupouto’a?

  • @umutangata
    @umutangataАй бұрын

    After further research I see that Tuku’aho is the grandfather of Taufa’ahau/King George Tupou I. So, that would make Tupouto’a the father of King George Tupou I. And all 3 carrying the title of Tu’i Kanokupolu. Interesting to think about reading thru the book about Tuku’aho & Tupouto’a characters when King George Tupou 1 descends directly from them. Just interesting to think about the current Tongan royal line descends from Tuku’aho after reading about his character in this book. Apologize ahead of time if I have the incorrect information.

    Toko, this ship belonged to France in 1790 under the original name General Dumourier and it was involved in the triangular trade which includes moving slaves. The British Royal Navy captured her in 1793 in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. That's how she got her new name Port-Au-Prince and the British was using the ship for different reason of what William Mariner story is about.
