Chapter 5 Part 1 William Mariner was a young English boy who spent 4-5 years in Tonga.

In 1806 William Mariner stopped off in Tonga in the Ha'apai Islands where most of the adults on his ship were slaughtered by the natives. He becomes adopted by the King Chief and General of Tonga and raised by the youngest wife of that King, Finau 'Ulukalala, a native of Ha'apai. This is his story.

Finau 'Ulukalala and Tupouniua have the same father, 'Ulukalala I aka 'Ulukalala 'i Ma'ofanga. Tupouniua's mother was Fehi'a from Niuatoputapu. Finau 'Ulukalala and Tupouto'a have the same mother, 'Ulukilupetea from Ha'apai. And of course Tupouto'a's father was Tuku'aho, the 14th Tu'i Kanokupolu. Hala'api'api and Finau 'Ulukalala were first cousins. Finau 'Ulukalala's father, 'Ulukalala 'i Ma'ofanga and Hala'api'api's father Pasiaka were brothers. Toe'umu and Finau 'Ulukalala's father, 'Ukukalala 'i Ma'ofanga were first cousins. Toe'umu's father Kafoa and 'Ukukalala 'i Ma'ofanga's father Tuituiohu were brothers. So Toe'umu's nephews were both Finau 'Ulukalala and Tupouniua. I'm sharing this to show that all these people were pretty much all family and highlights what Finau 'Ulukalala's ambitions were and what he was willing to do. On a side note - anthropologist, psychoanalyst and author Elizabeth Bott Spillius stated that most writers have assumed that Cook’s "Feenou" was 'Ulukalala-'i-Ma'ofanga. According to her "Feenou" was probably Tu‘ihalafatai, son of Tupoulahi.

    It's so cool to read Mariner's rendered spelling of Tongan. At 22:38 Mariner writes "gooa" for the Tongan "kuo". But I wonder if "gooa" actually meant "kua" which would be the archaic form for "kuo"? Otherwise wouldn't Mariner have written it as a "goooh"? Just a thought. Thank you for this toko. Maalie! Oh, also the place in 'Uiha where Tupouniua was buried is called Mala'e Lahi. It's the burial grounds where the ancient rulers of Tonga were buried. Now they are buried at Mala'e Kula on Tongatapu.

    I 100% could agree on the fact that “kua” was the archaic form of “kuo”, as the island of ‘Uvea (Wallis) who’s culture and linguistic terms are predominantly Tongan, use “kua” in their vocabulary commonly (in the same sense and meaning of “kuo”). Probably may also give some signs of an earlier form of Tongan during the times of the Tu’i Tonga empire and before the arrival of Christianity.

    @@Ngalufanifo98I remember reading an article about a letter Mafihape (Mariner’s Tongan mother) wrote to Mariner who already had returned to England by that time. Mariner said he couldn’t quite decipher the letter, because the Tongan in the letter was different than the Tongan he spoke while being in Tonga. The letter was also written after the time the Christian missionaries got to Tonga & possibly tampered with the old ancient language during Tu’i Tonga era.

    You pretty much explained the role of a Nimatapu. A royal undertaker who's only allowed to prepare the kings body for burial. Back in the days the Nimatapu were buried alive with the king or had their hands cut off. I was told this happened in Tongatapu. They weren't allowed to touch anything for if I remembered right 100 moons.

  • @umutangata

    @umutangata

    Ай бұрын

    After further research I see that Tuku’aho is the grandfather of Taufa’ahau/King George Tupou I. So, that would make Tupouto’a the father of King George Tupou I. And all 3 carrying the title of Tu’i Kanokupolu. Interesting to think about reading thru the book about Tuku’aho & Tupouto’a characters when King George Tupou 1 descends directly from them. Just interesting to think about the current Tongan royal line descends from Tuku’aho after reading about his character in this book. Apologize ahead of time if I have the incorrect information.
