I was wondering if you can wax resist over the gum solution in order to dip glaze the remaining piece. Is there any effect to the image using both gum & wax? Also curious about the firing temperature...will all this work at cone 6

It’s better to re-bisque the chalk because it will smudge prior to that since there isn't anything sealing it, if you try to apply wax prior to bisque it will more than likely destroy the image.

I love this video -- thank you. I have been experimenting with crayon and pencil on bisqued porcelian with fantastic results. I But wondering as I am experimenting with Gum tests,,, is there a way to apply the layers of Gum to raw bisqued porcelain without an underglaze layer? Also - I have had issues with the crayon 'ripping or scratching through' the Gum (it then peels up like latex),, hmmmm == could this be just from too little drying time? I realize this is an older video -- hoping you are still out there:))) peace

Hi there! I' glad to hear that you're experimenting with our chalk crayons! As for adding layers of gum solution to raw bisqued porcelain without an underglaze layer, that is possible, but most likely they will just come out as dry chalk without a glaze effect. In the video we apply a base glaze then the gum solution on top of then the crayons on top of the gum solution. So when they are fired the gum solution burns out but then the chalks melt into the glaze and then are shiny after they are fired. You could definitely try it but we just recommend doing a test tile first. As for the gum solution peeling up, I would assume it's dry time. Let it dry longer and if you're still having issues, let us know! Thanks!

@@AMACOBrent Ohhh thank you so much. Sorry for the delay -- my browser decided to not show comments. So I am taking your advice in a bit way --- tons of test tiles -- and yes -- the peeling... I need to be a lot more patient with drying. Right now, main issue is that blue green/teal crayon comes out a drab green even Cone 5... but I am still trying to resolve - and have test tile results in a day or two - I shall keep you posted - again -- thanks and sorry for the delay :)))

Once you have applied gum solution to your and then done your drawing on the solution can you clear glaze over your drawing?

  • @AMACOBrent

You can. It will just dilute and degrade the drawing. We recommend applying a base glaze first then applying gum solution over that and then doing your drawing with the chalk crayons so the drawing melts into the glaze rather than being underneath it. Let us know if this answers your question :)

Can I break the crayons into slip to color slips? To use on greenware?

For slip I just mix mason stain in with some white slip until I get the desired color. I don’t think your results will be as good with underglaze crayons, or be as expensive. Hope that helps 👍 Edit: I also just used the chalk for the first time, I used it on bisque-ware that had a layer of vitreous slip added at the green ware stage. I used a bit of water and a bamboo brush to get some watercolor effects, going back over those areas with the chalk and it really adds a lot of depth.

Can CMC Gum Powder be used instead of the gum solution? If yes how do you mix it? Thanks

CMC gum should work as a substitute for Gum Solution. Mix according to manufacturers directions or find directions on websites like DigitalFire.

does this work at cone 10?

Probably. But you will not get the same results as a lower cone firing. You may notice that your colors may fade while others may get darker. Try a test tile.
