Decorating Ceramics: SMUGs & UNDERGLAZE PENCILS

Want to spice up your decorating style on your bisque-ware? Try out our SMUGs (Semi Moist Underglazes) and Underglaze Pencils!
SMUGs are intense, opaque colors which are especially good for watercolor effects and painting of fine detail. Semi-Moist Underglazes are packaged in pans, like watercolors.
Underglaze Pencils are ideal for shading, fine line drawing or identification. Apply the underglaze pencil to bisque ware to create a variety of unique decorative designs.
Try them out in your studio and share your results with us online using #howiamaco

Great video! Thank you for sharing. I would LOVE to see a video where you use the velvet and the SMUGs together.

Hi, I really liked the way you painted the plate. I was able to pick up some great tips.

I’m sorry, I’m a TOTAL Newbie. I purchased a pkg of smugs, I plan on using them on bisqueware. Once painting is complete, I will either sponge on clear glaze or dip into clear and fire at cone 6. My confusion is where does the Amaco satin Matt white glaze you mention fit into the steps. Sorry again, I’m completely lost. Hoping you can help clarify. Thank you.

I have the same question at Lucie above. Is this correct: you applied a white base coat and fired the piece to bisque, then applied smugs and bisque-fired once more, then applied more smugs at a later date (which is what we see in this video) and bisqued it once again, then you apply a clear coat and give it it’s final glaze firing? Or do some of these firings overlap (such as applying the white base glaze and first application of smugs at once. I’ve tried this and found my white base and smugs blended instead of the white acting as a canvas of sorts for my smugs). Also hoping you might provide some clarity and thank you!

I applied 2-3 coats of SM-11 White, and allowed it to dry. I applied the SMUGs to the dry (not fired) glaze, then fired to cone 5 with no clear glaze coating. I have used the technique of firing the SM-11 to bisque temperature (cone 05-04) bt I don't find it necessary. I don't fid that the glaze rehydrates, but maybe I don't use as much water? ~Cara

Great video. If I wanted to add translucent layers of (different ) color ie: blended color wash using polymers in acrylic painting -- - is it necessary to bisque each layer as you go or is there a safe way to do so without firing each layer? peace and thanks!

If you're painting with the SMUGs on your bisque ware then no. You can apply them just like you paint with watercolors then apply a clear glaze over them.

Hi. I use Amaco Velvet underglazes to paint on my bisqued pots. I am wondering if I water them down would I have the same watercolor effect of these SMUGS you are using here? Great video, thank you!

We fired this plate to cone 6. You can also use the SMUGs on low fire bisque and just apply a low fire clear glaze over them.
