    I've been using Velvet Underglaze bisqued at 06 followed by overglaze LG-10 Clear fired to cone 5 with excellent results. My ceramics instructor says I shouldn't use LG-10 at cone 5 because it's made to fire at cone 10. All my test tiles look great, even using dots of underglaze, and my work looks beautiful. Should I switch to HF-9 zinc-free clear overglaze?

    When do you recommend applying the velvel underglazes? On greenware, bone dry clay or bisque? I made a couple tests and it looks like the timing of application changes both the result quality and the color

    What can you say about HF 12 vs SM 10? They are satin clear, both zinc-free, but they must be differentiated in something.. Looking at your test tiles, it looks like SM 10 is more opaque and covers more than HF12. I am interested in your insight. Thank you

    Thanks for this video :) I'm confused about the relationship between cone number and high/low fire... I thought High Fire meant a high cone number and low fire meant a low cone number. Early in this video you recommend using a High Fire 9 glaze over underglaze "if you're using cone 5 glaze"

    HF-9 is the number of the glaze, not a cone designation. It has a firing range of cone 5 to cone 10. THe corresponding glaze for low fire is LG-10. ~Cara

    Hello! I have used LG 10 and HF 9 over bisqued velvet underglaze and they all turn out either bubbly or smudged. I fire the pieces in a studio kiln that glaze fires up to cone 6 and I can't change any firing aspects due to this. Is this due to the glaze being overfired or perhaps applying thinner layers could solve this issue? My test tiles always come out great but never on the real things 😅 I'm crying

    Great video. How do these work on a dark clay body? Should I use white underglaze under the colors? If so, do you recommend 3 coats white and 3 coats of the color? (I have tried using my slip, underglaze and my own 20x5 clear and unfortunately I had crazing caused by the slip.)

  • @AMACOBrent

    @AMACOBrent

    It depends on the dark clay body you're using as to how the colors will come out and whether you should use a white slip underneath. White slips will be more opaque than a white underglaze, so you may need to test a few. Most underglaze colors are fairly opaque on their own, but some will be altered by the oxides in dark clays. ~Cara

    I’ve had some trouble with cloudiness when I use satin matte clear at cone 5. I use three coats. Am I putting it on too thick? I don’t have as much cloudiness at cone 6. I’m thinking of going to HF-9. Is that a matte or gloss?

    @@AMACOBrent Thank you. Is it safe to use different glazes on different pieces of pottery in the same firing? For instance, could I use HF-9 on some pieces and HF-10 on my pinks in the same firing? Or do I need to fire these separate?

    @@HeartBoxStudio Yes you can do that! You can always use wax resist over areas that are already glazed while you apply your second glaze.

    To the best of my knowledge Duncan CC underglazes work similarly to Amaco LUG and Velvets, but you may need to test to see if there are any color changes. We don't test other company underglazes.

    I do because the underglaze contains gums that can mess with the glaze (causing bubbles). So I bisque to get rid of the gum.
