Glaze Application Tips & Tricks: PC-02 Saturation Gold

In this video we walk you through our application tips and tricks when glazing with PC-02 Saturation Gold.
PC-02 Saturation Gold can be a finicky glaze but the biggest tip is making sure you have thick enough application when applying your 3 coats. This ensures the beautiful final gold result rather than a patchy, black glaze.
Safety Warning: Tableware producers must test all finished ware to establish dinnerware status, due to possible variations in firing temperature and contamination.

It's actually good that you can control it by making it thin-thick application. If you want that satiny bronze-ish look instead of shiny gold

I only use Gold or Platinum for accents on my works. As lim or lines..perhaps images...etc.

Hi Thanks for the video. I am a student potter and the ceramic Tech for a community art centre. I made a full bust of C3PO. I want to use this glaze. We have a slow cooling cone 6 firing. Will the glaze work with a slow cool down? thanks Dennis

It's a common issue for those new to brushing glazes to not get a thick enough application.

Thanks for the tutorial. My question is if I’m applying let’s say a Smokey merlot in a pot with three coats and want to layer it with temmoku do I apply 3 applications as well for the temmoku or is that too much? This is my first time glazing so I don’t have a point of reference of what is too much. Thank you again!!

It depends on how heavy you apply glaze. Most beginners tend to apply very light coats, so 3 might work, but I generally do 2 coats over 2 coats when layering PC glazes. I recommend you make a small test piece or test tile to find the best application for you. ~Cara

Hi i have problems getting this to come out nicely on cone 5 laguna buff sculpture clay….. is there a way to get it to work on a rougher grogged sculpture clay? I tried a coat of white underglaze over the clay to make a smoother whiter iron free surface before putting on the glaze, that didn’t seem to help…. Does it work a lot differently on different clays? I read some people put a gloss coat of clear cone five, fire it and then glaze over the fired glass glaze with the saturation gold….. i need to use the sculpture clay for my larger sculptures 30”

What is the best firing schedule to fire PC glazes to cone 5?

Hi there, we use a select fire electric controller that has the firing schedule programmed automatically. We fire ours on a medium speed.

To achieve the gold result, I usually apply at least 6 coats and fire in cone 6. But recently, some parts are burnt like volcano and after serving food and washed by detergent, the gold colour seems somewhat faded out....is it normal? Do the gold colour last? Even after used and washed?

The gold color should last, but it can be affected by acids in foods and detergents. ~Cara

Hi, based the piece you showed, I think The PC02 Saturation Gold has a great antiquey effect. Can this be used with other glaze colors brushed over it and hold the color? or combined with shinos? thanks for thoughts.

PC-2 Saturation Gold will change appearance when layered, either over or under other glazes. Samples on our website are guides only and not meant to be guarantees of results. Check out our Layering site for samples of Saturation Gold layered with other glazes.

Disaster. Applied 6 thick coats as advised in this tutorial. Came out of the kiln deep slate matte gray. This glaze is way too temperamental. Will not be using again.

Run test tiles with tempermental glazes. There are tons of factors that affect things, clay body, kiln variations and operation, cooldown speed, if you let coats dry enough, etc
