The number one test of a properly made chicken fried steak is, "Does the crust fall fall off of the steak, or does it stay adhered?" A good CFS will slice with a knife, and not lose its crust.

I don't go to IHOP anymore . They went downhill . Smaller portions and higher prices .

The reviews on any platform depends on the location because each has its own cooking crew...

I am happily surprised Denny's beat out the Cracker Barrel and the Texas Roadhouse. Denny's makes a delicious chicken fried steak.

Yeah, I tried their "country" fried sirloin. It wasn't bad, but I won't do that again. I agree, their restaurants aren't the same now.

Cracker Barrel. I love the gravy. But the country fried steak? Tastes and feels like a breaded hamburger patty. Not at all impressed by that lately. Bob Evans is somewhat better. Our Texas Roadhouse actually does a pretty good country fried...errrmmmmm...chicken fried steak.

I won't say all but most country fried steak at chain restaurants is just frozen from a bag and deep fried. Some of them are probably using the same supplier.

I recently had this dish at Texas Roadhouse in Boynton Beach Florida. It looked anything but good. I literally couldn't cut it. They replaced it and I wound up leaving most of it because again I couldn't cut it and the gravy was tasteless.

I've eaten that dish at most of the chains mentioned. None of them are as good as what's served at Montana Mike's, and even that isn't as good as what's served at most independent diners.

Check out the chicken fried steak at Clear Springs restaurant in New Braunfels if you are ever in that area.

"Mashed" should take stock of what kind of oil is used when frying anything, as some oil is completely unhealthy to use for any food purpose. 1 of 13 is within decent distance (5-miles) on Colorado Springs west side (Texas T). The rest either are closed or never existed. Due to the fry oil used in many restaurants, I don't have a list regarding many fried foods. Strong rumor has it that rapeseed was first used to lubricate machinery during WWII.

Around here, they serve "country" fried steak. It is breaded, not battered. I notice you use both terms in the narration. They are not the same. Proper chicken fried steak is battered not breaded. I also find it usually comes frozen, from a factory somewhere, and was just re-heated by the restaurant, not cooked fresh. It often has no steak at all, just a kind of meat paste hiding in a thick coat of breading. Chicken fried steak is supposed to be a cheaper cut, tenderized by the cook (although, having the butcher use one of those tenderizing machines is OK). The meat comes out thin so it cooks fast and doesn't get greasy or over cooked. The correct batter is light but crunchy and stays on the meat. Places like Texas Roadhouse that use an actual steak are making it wrong. It is inevitably over-cooked by deep frying and comes out too tough. 6:52 I asked the waitress at Bob Evans what kind of steak they used in the "country" fried steak (they don't call it "chicken" fried). She couldn't answer and wouldn't ask in the kitchen. Let's just say I am skeptical. 10:31 Black Bear only in the mid-west and west coast? It isn't in the mid-west at all. Southwest and far west only.

I’ve been to non-chain diners with okay chicken-fried steak, but now I eat it only at home.

Growing up in Oregon I can say that black bear diner is pretty good ❤

Shoney's has the best... if you can find one still open. Denny's is usually good... and consistent. Cracker Barrel's is good but I hate that "Sawmill" gravy, which tastes like a cross between pencils and salad bacon bits. Surprisingly, Chili's offered a decent CFS, but if I'm not mistaken, it's no longer on the menu. Texas Roadhouse is a bit disappointing... not bad, just not as good as their other menu items. I've never had anything good at IHOP.

Iron skillet at Petro truck stops makes very good country fried steak. Take it from an old trucker.

I’ve only eaten chicken fried steak at two of these places. Texas Roadhouse was not impressive. The sirloin was breaded and fried without being tenderized. That ruined it for me. The other place is Cracker Barrel and I like the gravy and the steak is tenderized but you get the feeling it was processed somewhere and frozen and shipped there in a big bag. The shape is always the same. It’s OK but just not made in the kitchen.

The best chicken'fried steak I've ever had is at Harlows Diner on Rathdrum, Idaho !!!

I wish people would stop drenching the top of the steak with gravy so it gets nice and soggy ruining the crispyness. Always lay a thick layer of gravy under the steak. Then the steak stays crispy on top thru the whole meal

most of these are simply premade frozen concoctions from whichever supplier these chain uses. Unless a restaurant actually breads and fries themselves, they all taste the same and are terrible.

For years, I drive out of my way to find a Black Bear Diner in California just for their country fried steak. It is huge, delicious, tender, and crispy. And the actual sausage gravy, rather than some white stuff, is outstanding.

Choose your poison - a good (and small) country-fried steak leaves you alive for the next one!

I don't think I've ever had good chicken fried steak. Fried [something else] or regular steak have been better choices

Uhhh...no. Brown gravy belongs on roast, meat loaf, and Salisbury steak. You would get escorted out of most restaurants in the south, midwest, and even the west coast if you asked for brown gravy.

Cracker Barrel is still my favorite that's where my family love to go for a family dinner and plus the gift shop is awesome ❤ if you don't like my comment move on 🤨

OMG, whoever did this review is on something. Rating Cracker Barrel's soggy Chicken Fried ground beef as a step up in richness and authenticity in comparison to the review of Texas Roadhouse's awesome Chicken Fried Steak, well let's just say, I'll take what they're having, cause if it makes Craker Barrel's breaded, fried hamburger patty taste like CFS I want some. Not the Cracker Barrel CFS, but whatever you're taking that caused you to come up with this list of bad taste.

Cracker Barrel's steak is rubbish. Frozen meat pucks.

Its not a cut of steak for the grill, it is usually round steak pounded and soaked to tenderized.

The best "cookin' "?.....especially of CFS and other "homemade" flavors? IS....."HOME".....MADE!!!! 👍😁NO....CHANCE TO EAT SO GOOD, AT "HOME"?!......THEN, EXPECT A "QUALITY DROP", AT LEAST A "LITTLE" ONE,....WITH.... EVERY....MEAL!! 🫤

Texas Roadhouse is a joke anyways. Plus, the complaints in regards to this place are correct with its prime rib being entirely fat and its food being a disgrace to Texas cuisine. Texas Roadhouse is overrated as Hell.
