The thing is though, Central was a well-established name in the ITV network whereas Westcountry wasn't. But in all fairness, the least Carlton could have done was inform those viewers about the changes for viewers in the South West like they did for those in the Midlands.

If I remember rightly, HTV was brought by Granada, but due to competition rules at the time, Granada had to sell it. So they opted to sell it to Carlton. As HTV covered Wales, and ITV respected the nations at the time (including when ITV Wales was still given local continuity until 2006) I guess that’s why they maintained the HTV name… until October 2002.

How with a bid of £2,000 per year, was Central not the first company to go on the kill and buy up another ITV company? It could have easily bid for Granada or LWT? Well it’s 30 years ago now, so it’s all history now.

There wasn't a 'switchover' as such, this was only a rebrand. The final Central ident aired late on 5 September 1999 (or possibly early hours of 6 September 1999), followed by the usual ITV Nighttime Branding, then after GMTV it started up as Carlton. Westcountry was similar (although it was locally branded overnight so the final Westcountry ident would have been into the news at 5:30).
