The Final Idents of Carlton, HTV, Granada, Yorkshire and LWT

This video is a comparison of the final idents of Carlton London, Carlton Westcountry, HTV Wales, Granada, Yorkshire and LWT. I haven't been able to find a final ident of any other region, sorry!
Timestamps:
0:00 - Carlton London
0:15 - Carlton Westcountry
0:26 - HTV Wales
0:41 - Granada
1:00 - Yorkshire
1:19 - London Weekend Television
UPDATE (21 December 2021) - Watch the final ident of Carlton Central here: • Carlton Central Final ...
(that was one I had not been able to find when I made this video back in November 2020, so here that ident is in all its glory)
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I'm aware, the Carlton London ident would have been recorded at 5:15pm on 25 October 2002, and the Carlton Westcountry, HTV Wales, Granada, Yorkshire and LWT idents would have been recorded at 12:20am on 28 October 2002.

Carlton were responsible for this. They were the ones who removed regional identities first. Central, Westcountry and London Weekday had lost their regional identities a lot earlier than when they removed them to become a single ITV ident.

It's rather arguable who was worse. Carlton did debrand Central and Westcountry but they still continued on as separate stations in their own right despite losing their names - and as part of that Carlton did employ 3 different people sat in 3 different cities to say 'Now on Carlton...' over the same ident announcing the same programme. Because apart from the name change, Carlton London/Central/Westcountry were all still separate operations. Meanwhile Granada may well have kept the regional names up on screen but behind the scenes they were removing everything that underpinned them. Does make the final day rather odd though. By that point Carlton was operating 2 brand names but with 4 sets of continuity announcers, with everything except HTV West dedicated. They could have made a big deal about the end of regional continuity but didn't. Meanwhile Granada were operating 7 brand names with 3 sets of announcers. Yet each station got it's own special final announcement referencing the launch date and also they allowed LWT to do their big bow out. Despite Granada handling the transition to national ITV1 better, I do think during the 1999-2002 period in the grand scheme of things Carlton actually acted far better than Granada did in terms of preserving a regional ITV station, even if they did kill off the Central/Westcountry brand names. FWIW Carlton did realise their mistake quickly and never rebranded HTV when they acquired it in 2001. Should also be noted that the instant Carlton/Granada finally merged in 2004, Granada as the larger player immediately went about removing the last remnants of individuality between stations, making the regional news corporate immediately and then moving on to get rid of the final knockings of regional identity within two years of the merger. I do actually think things would have gone better in terms of preserving regionality on ITV if Carlton had ended up being the bigger player.

The fact that LWT’s final screen thanked the staff of the station, while Carlton barely (if at all) acknowledged what was happening, kinda says a lot about the difference between the two companies. Long live regional ITV.

Carlton only got into ITV because their boss at the time was a close friend of Thatcher’s and Thatcher herself got to be PM long enough to bring down Thames over that Death On A Rock documentary! As much as I look back on GMTV as having been the best source of kids programming on Freeview throughout the 2000s, knowing what I know now, TVAM did NOT deserve to suffer as part of that 1990 broadcasting act!

Losing their regional identities was a huge mistake by ITV. Companies such as Granada were known internationally for the quality of their productions. In Germany, the regional broadcasters which were set up after WWII form part of the regional structure of ARD and maintain these links to this day.

Carlton Central didn't even bother to announce the end of their regional output and neither did it's London counterpart. HTV Wales (or Harlech) left out the ITV1 logo which must've left some viewers wondering what was happening to the station in future 😲. The other ITV stations handled the farewell really good I remember watching London Weekend Television's last day on air in Oct 2002., bringing back their River Ident logo in between programmes which was so nostalgic and then their last montage of LWT continuity and old idents which made me shed a tear or two that it really was the end of Regional ITV as we knew it. 😥. Since then ITV has become so bland, full of wailing contests, quizzes, dramas, reality shows and soaps........all celebrity driven to compete with the BBC and Sky. 😦!!!

The Carlton London junction would not have been 5:15pm. By the late 90s, CITV ended at 5, you had a programme at that time, and then another programme at 5:30pm. I remember in the 00s, CITV would do a continuity link saying goodbye to everyone which would then go directly into Crossroads, and IIRC into The People Versus after those shows swapped time slots. 5:15pm by this time would've been the middle of an ad break. I don't remember if they were still doing direct continuity links into The People Versus by 2002, though. If anything, given the announcer's talking about Katie Derham, the announcement sounds as if it was from 3pm-ish before the ITV News bulletin that happened before CITV.

My own version on Granada's final words, based on Toonami's final sign off: "Well, this is the end, beautiful friends. After more than 46 years, this is Granada Television's final broadcast as an independent channel. It's been a lot of fun, and we'd like to thank each and every one of you who made this quarter-century journey with us. And as you might know, our colleagues from London will take over continuity from 9.25 this morning. Granada Television wouldn't have been anything without you. Hopefully, we've left you with some good memories. So, on behalf of our northern team, and all the past Granada Television announcers and presenters since 1956, we bid you a fond farewell, and until we meet again, stay gold. Boom."
