CAUGHT in Lake Erie Storm - Huge Waves

Спорт

The weather report was calling for 2 Foot or Less. Goes to show how fast a storm can amp up the waves on Lake Erie! Changed to 8-12 foot waves in an hour. There were occasional bigger waves mixed in as the wave buoy recorded a 19 footer while we were out there!

Me and a buddy learned our lesson fishing lake michigan with a 19ft flat bottom boat at night. High winds came out of nowhere and we had 4 miles to get back to GB.... easily waves like the one in this video. Thankfully the wind and waves were blowing back to GB and we rode the waves like a surfboard. Stayed calm and didn't freak out. Never again!

I was going to Port Colborne, Ontario from Dunkirk, NY on a 30ft 89 Celebrity in 2008. We were taking 8'-10' waves in the middle from the left side. Boat would go up over the waves and slam into the water a few seconds later. I don't know how we made it. Now I refuse to go out if the winds are going to be strong.

At no point in 2008 was there 10ft waves on Lake Erie. Does nobody know how a wave is measured?? The largest wave EVER recorded on Lake Erie was 14ft, in Cleveland, during a literal hurricane. You were in max 6ft waves in 2008. Nothing larger than that was recorded, or existed.

My guess would be it’s measuring top to bottom of the drop, that make that 15 foot marker about 7.5, those look every bit of 5-8 footers which is indeed very sketchy but 12 footers is pushing record waves on Erie, I think the record is 13 out 14,

I doubt that they were that big. The data you held to the screen were either from someplace else, or they were from the Rocky River Buoy. The Rocky River Buoy data matches your data well if the wave height were given in inches, not feet. That being said, the waves grew a lot bigger during the next hour after that at Rocky River, the largest waves there may have grown to 3-4 feet. Your waves were probably bigger because you were much further out from shore with a longer fetch then that Buoy. The 45005 Buoy further out in the lake might have been more representative of your conditions. The largest waves there approached 6 feet. What stands out is how fast the waves grew...they doubled in height in just an hour or so. The winds were surprisingly strong for about an hour around 4 PM and were almost a gale. This is particularly surprising considering that the water temperatures were several degrees cooler than the air temperatures. I have no idea what caused that brief windstorm but suspect it was a far-downstream effect of thunderstorm clusters in the hours before you were hit. A 5-6 foot wave whipped by a 30 knot near-gale is nasty and steep, and likely to undergo localized breaking or white capping. It would be a force to be reckoned with. That was a nasty wind storm out there and I would not have anticipated it in those conditions. Those were definitely rough conditions.

Wave height usually includes wavelength some days waves can be 3-4ft but be 8-10 long other days you can have 8-10 foots waves with the length being of the wave around 3-5ft. They use an average of both to give weave height readings.

Honestly people on here cannot judge the wave height by a video. Waves are usually bigger than what you think it is on video. Erie is no joke when it gets rough out there. I would say 6-8 foot but again I cannot honestly judge by this video footage. Good size boat they had also. Been out in a 16.5 foot boat in 3-5's These are bigger than those were.

Yup. I saw 12" dock timbers smashed like toothpicks from 17' waves in Ashland. These waves in this video are what you'll find in lake winnebago with 25 mph winds. Not good if you're in a 17' boat, but you're not going to die if you know your stuff.

I think it's not wrong there have been much taller waves than that considered rogue waves now they don't get as big as they do in Superior Michigan but in the early days I think 1930s during major storms they were waves according to be 25 ft it's rare but it can happen now usually not towards the Pennsylvania or even Ohio side closer towards Buffalo or the Canadian side

That is at the 45005 Buoy in western Lake Erie. The buoys at the eastern end of the lake have recorded larger. Also, the wave height quoted is the "significant height". It is the average of the largest 1/3 of all zero-up crossing waves, or about 4 times the standard deviation of the water surface elevation. The largest individual waves are always larger...almost always by a factor of 1.5, and occasionally by a factor of 2 or greater. The largest waves in Lake Erie are well over 13 feet.
