METHOD FEEDER MASTERCLASS #2 - The Short Method! The method feeder is one of the most effective tactics on commercial fisheries. Preston ace Des Shipp has been bagging up over the past few years on exactly this, but not as you know it! He reveals one of his secret weapons for big carp…. The Short Method Feeder!
Des Shipp heads over to Larford Lakes, on the Specimen Lake in search of some huge carp. The commercial feeder star runs through the bait, tackle and tactics he uses to bag up on commercials using the Short Method Feeder!

There are some fabulous match anglers around these days, but I find Des Shipp videos to be the best, he seems an open book with tips on everything, great guy and one hell of an angler, on pole, bomb, feeder, or waggler he can do it all, and it wouldn't surprise me if he is king on the rivers too ... Many thanks Mr. Shipp, we are all much obliged sir !

Same mainline and hook length line i use for feeder fishing, only i use a Drennan Red Range Carp feeder rod but same length as the rod Des is using here, 10ft. I use a MAP ACS 4000 reel and hooks i use are Guru MWG barbless sizes 18 and 14. Caught a very nice 12lb 7oz Mirror yesterday and should have landed another bigger fish but for a hook pull which i put down to purely my own fault, such a big fish at one point i had it nearly under the rod tip and decided to tighten the clutch a bit and lift the rod up and off it bolted followed by slack line but oh well. I'm getting more and more into method feeder fishing its becoming my number one method of fishing now with the pole my second choice (especially after getting snagged with it on Monday resulting in my top kit breaking and then badly injuring my finger when the hook length eventually broke from so much pressure) though i have to say for my margin rigs on the pole, using Guru N-Gauge 0.22 as mainline and Reflo Power 0.19 for hook lengths, coupled with 18-20 hollow elastic it does give me a good chance at getting double figure Carp out...hopefully will get to test that soon. I would have got Reflo Power for mainline the next one up from 0.19 but my tackle shop had ran out of it so got the Guru N-Gauge and its just as good.

cns180784 I’ve just spooled up reels with reflo I did have guru dragline before that. It’s very tough hard wearing had on reels for 3 yrs. in 8lb bs landed high doubles through weed and snags. Nd yes feeder fishing is great method I’m an all rounder but been doing loads of feeder fishing. last summer a pike of 15lb took my feeder with fake corn on it. As I reeled in the pike smashed into feeder and side hooked it, perfect hook hold lol. Anyway is drennan rod red range good I’ve seen bloke use using pellet wagler in red range 10ft. Would your one feeder be good for big doubles even low 20s I’m looking for a feeder that would be able too cos lakes I’m fishing 20s get caught regular. Closest I’ve heard korum carp feeder rod could do it but not really designed to fish for big carp. Anyway sorry too hear you broke ur pole. Broke my margin pole trod on it and got splinter wow didn’t know how painful they are took ages for it to come out. Anyway tight lines bud

Barry hi well i cant honestly recommend the Drennan Red Range 10ft feeder rod for Carp to 20lb+ as i have yet to catch one. That one i lost the other week could have been not far off 20lb but i honestly cannot be sure, i never saw it and i lost it but my rod was managing it well up to when the hook pulled. I like the rod, has a nice soft progressive action, to be honest i'm sure there are many other feeder rods that are just like it. My advice would be to join the Maggotdrowning forums and get recommendations from there. I saw a few recommendations for a Maver Genesis 11ft Pellet Waggler rod so i bought one of those for pellet waggler fishing and after the tip section broke, i had it replaced and it was then fine and is a nice rod. I only use Preston Reflo Power for pole rigs and hook lengths, but i see no reason why it cant be used as your mainline for a reel like you have done so yourself. As for my pole its ok, i still have another three top kits (up to 10-12 hollow) and the rest of the pole is fine, but i have thought about getting a new one, a Drennan Acolyte Carp 13m (current one i have is a Drennan Red Range Carp 11m) but because i'm so into method feeder fishing now, getting a new pole is now bottom of my list but that could change. I thought margin poles are built so they're really strong so i'm surprised you broke yours by stepping on it...my advice dont bother with a margin pole and just get a Drennan Red Range Carp 11m which is the one i started on and i still have. Its priced well comes with two top kits and the bits you need to elasticate it (just need to buy the elastic) also comes with factory fitted side pull slots which are better than puller bungs, but still there are other poles out there you just need to get a decent one for your budget. I take it you want a feeder rod that uses quiver tips? if you're touch ledgering, or using bite alarms or bells then i'd recommend a Wychwood Carp fishing rod, cheap for what they are and are strong enough for those specimen Carp, my mate bought one recently think it cost like £50 so slightly cheaper than the Drennan Red Range that i have.

If keepnets are used sensibly, have a good mesh and the weighing in process is done at water level, nets are no issue at all. Look at all the match fisheries where people catch fish 5-6 days a week. They use proper techniques to weigh the fish in, not the old-style "roll them down the dry net onto the ground", and the fish are clearly fine

I use 8lb main to a 6lb hooklength on my feeder for commercials it’s great. You just have to play the fish a little more carefully Don’t try to bully them out of a run too much and also set a lighter drag on your reel. It makes for awesome sport!
