Catbells, Maiden Moor & High Spy Hike: Best Lake District Walks, 3 Wainwrights

This was a stunning 10 mile walk, filled to the brim with awesome views and wild beauty, up the very popular Wainwright fells of Catbells, Maiden Moor and High Spy. We parked in a small parking area (approx. CA12 5UE) on the road that runs alongside the eastern side of Catbells, these spaces fill up very quickly so an early start is advisable.
The walk up Catbells is short and sharp, a small amount of easy scrambling can take place here, it is gentle fun but may be a bit slippery in bad conditions. An excellent starter fell, we can understand why this fell is so incredible popular with families, the views are impeccable, looking over Derwentwater and Keswick.
The path between Catbells and Maiden Moor is very distinct. Once down in the dip between the fells you can also cut off to the east and make your way down to Derwentwater for a shorter but still stunning circular walk. However, we made our way up the winding trail to the Maiden. We watched the scenery change with every step, becoming more remote and wild. We stopped on the top for a highly anticipated cup of tea before moving off towards the highest peak of the day, High Spy.
The path between Maiden Moor and High Spy is also very obvious and flattens out for a short time before reaching another short burst uphill to the absolutely massive trig point of High Spy. From here you can see the scarring of Rigghead Slate Quarry and the towering outline of Dale Head. We made our way down the fell before turning east over peat bog land, not easy to see a path here so just keep heading towards the mining works and the path becomes clear. We made our way through the quarry, heading down towards the Borrowdale valley, poking about the ruins and manmade openings, before crossing the river and going through the gate.
We poked around a bit at Castle Crag Quarry as we went by, interesting place, feels a bit eerie. Eventually we met up with the mighty River Derwent, the water was crystal clear and seemed to be a real draw for families. We had to wind our way through farm yards and fields before meeting up with the road that hugs the east side of the Catbells range before getting back to our car.
An amazing walk, we had a cracking day of it, a route we had wanted to do for a while and it did not disappoint!

Love the inscription on the top😍. Ah the views from Catbells are just gorgeous, one of our faves, if you can avoid the crowds which you seem to have managed👍. Haha nice fact check Ceri😆👌, we could see you were a little bit nervous of your research, as we all would be when running it past the master of the fact check Kat😆👍. Talking of which the history of the graphite and those pencils was really interesting, did you visit the pencil museum? We did a few years back on a very rainy day and it was actually very interesting🤗👍. Ah we love pointing out the mountains we have been up too, and you are spot on Ceri, always a different experience each time you climb them🥰 ⛰️ 🏔 🌄 . Ooh great tip on maiden moor for a wild Camp, that can go on the list, looks perfect! Mmm higgedy rolls for pack lunch! We love those too! FONCY🤣🤣😋. Top tip if you like those try the Higgedy mini cheese muffins, they are immense😋🙌. Stills lovely views from high spy despite some low cloud😊👍. There is just something about an old mine shaft that does compell you to go inside isn't there😆🤔. That's enough for one day though! Do you have anymore adventures from your trip to the lakes to come? Ooooh p.s the pencil museum, Foxy is obsessed with trying to get us to visit (truth be told we are keen to too) but it has now become a running joke every trip, he asks and we disappointed him! ✏️ 😔 one day he will be surprised and we will say yes ✏️ ❤️

One of my favourite fells, great to see you enjoying the area, brings back wonderful memories. I would never bet against Catbells trig being the prettiest of all the trigs, it would be terrible odds. Loved the alpine flower, stands out against the greens. I enjoyed watching, hope you are both well, Winnie

Cheers - this 10 mile trek is amazing and a treat both for the hiker, the botanist and the historian; so I still think you deserve a large pay check from the Tourist Board for promoting this piece of the Lake District! And also from the National Health Service as you inspire people to go out to those green spaces and that is medicine for both mind and body. Incidentally watching this made me delay my evening jog; so now happily I will do only 6 km and not 10:-) So thanks for improving my evening in two different ways! This really is an extremely beautiful 10 mile walk. Beautiful views all around. Beautiful nature around you, the view of the lake is breathtaking. In some parts, the path is steep, but exciting. Thanks for the nice video dear friends. Sretana & Zac💖💖

Ooo. What a classic walk Ceri and Kat. Catbells is iconic isn’t it. Definitely agree that’s it’s one of the prettiest trigs around and definitely bloomin’ beautiful. You can tell just how popular it is by those well worn paths to the top. How amazing are those views of Derwent water from the top too. The Lake District on a nice weather day certainly takes some beating. It really is a stunning place with some fab places to eat and drink in the evening after a long walk. I can’t wait to get back again myself, although I need to break my bad luck with the weather. I think I’ve upset the Lake District weather gods at some point in the past 😢. Thanks for taking us along on this fab walk. Have a great weekend guys 🙂❤👍

Catbells is so beautiful and has really good view to effort ratios. I took my daughter up here many years ago when she was only 5. Apart from needing a helping hand on the slight scamble sections she did it no problem. Am thinking about taking her back here at the grand age of 19 when we visit the Lakes in Sept.

That was a calm and restful video, your drone wandered lonely as a cloud floating on high, I liked it ! Lovely end of borrowdale valley. There was some magnificent dual facting happening, loved the mine and the music was great...the Oscar goes to.....
