New Forest Walk: Autumn Fungi Hike (Devil's Fingers & Nail Fungus)

This was an awesome autumnal walk on the heaths and woodlands of the special New Forest National Park, Hampshire, England. The New Forest has retained ancient common pasture rights, meaning, residents of the New Forest are permitted to allow their pigs, horses, ponies, donkeys, cattle and occasionally sheep, to graze on the land at certain times of the year. They are also free to gather wood/clay and peat from the land. So the woodland, heaths and villages have lots of free roaming animals it is absolutely brilliant! Pigs just pottering about, kindly donkeys and gentle New Forest ponies greet you constantly, it is such a great experience.
Another great thing about their free roaming lives.....poop. This has provided an excellent environment for some rare and unusual fungi.
We found an abundance of the very strange, alien looking, Devil's Fingers fungus in one area of the dry heath on Setley Plain, spread by flies landing on the stinkhorn's smelly spores and then landing on the pony/donkey dung. On the same dung we found the very rare Nail Fungus, a mycologists dream, this one is a big hitter in that world (we recorded both on iRecord).
We decided to head off to Denny Wood, and a good sized free carpark (SO43 7FZ) we had been told it was not only stunning in Autumn but the best woodland for a multitude of Fungi, sounded perfect. Armed with the Collins guide we headed off close to the main path but remaining mostly among the trees and dead wood, we hardly got a few feet before we were trying to identify fungi. I cannot remember them all but as a quick and not comprehensive run down, we think we found...Amethyst deceiver, Bay Bolete, Brown Birch Bolete, Puffballs, False Deathcap, Milkcaps, Giant Polypore, Golden Spindle, Honey fungus, Inkcap, Orange Oak Bolete, Porcelain Mushroom, Waxcaps, Stinkhorn, Turkeytail, Yellow Stagshorn, Fly Agaric and many, many more, basically what we are saying is, the woods are alive with the sound of two idiots saying 'ooooh, look at his one'.
We did a 7.5 mile circular in the woodland, we took ages due to the wildlife bothering. It was amazing. And, We got to see the piggies of the New Forest which honestly was the cherry on the cake!

Never even heard of Devils Fingers (or the wonderful Octopus Stinkhorn😃😃) top name! Loved the wild horses and donkeys! And Ceri and the Slug/Fungi 🤣🤣 Miss the New Forest. Cheers - this has been another nice adventure filled with enthusiasm and fun facts. So where is that check from the Tourist Board - you really deserve it! Both for showcasing the grand New Forest and for showing us the hidden life of fungi in the forest. On that note I have to admit that I first thought that the Devils fingers is an elaborate hoax to fool us city dwellers - how can anything in England's green and pleasant land look like that. But when you explained the link to Australia things fell into place:-) Another fun fact is that there is a link between The New Forest and my city in the north courtesy of the gallant RAF; but what it is I will leave as a quiz for those interested in history! So hoping to see a new Christmas vlog from you soon - that will for sure cheer up the community and this year we need it! All the best, Ant

The puff mushrooms are just so funny 😂 I love to go on mushroom hunting myself but you always need a good book or someone who knows-it-all, I bet LexiKat is just that person :) Great to see those “wild” horses, just like being back in the prairie! Geez some of these mushrooms are probably not even earth being, they looks so weird!!! The most that you can find in Sweden btw is chanterelles or karljohan that I don’t know how you say in English… Really cool adventure guys ❤. Great to see you out and about 😊 always fun to be part of the tea team !!

Poo fungus...nooo. I thought the devils fingers was a toy. It looked out of place. Some fancy fungus out there. I wouldn't know one from t'other. Some look pretty cool. We're celebrating the poopy fungi find too, Ceri and Kat! 😁😁So much better to find it before stepping in it! Lovely forest stroll but we wouldn't be eating the mushrooms with the most poisonous variety to be found. We'll enjoy the domestic ones found in the markets! Good idea taking the book some mushrooms can be quite bad for you . Interesting walk perfect time of the year for them. The fungi is cool too see so many different varieties. wonder if the horses eat them 🤔 Beautiful autumnal colours in the forest. Good video Ceri & Katt 😁👍

My boss lives in the New Forest, who knows maybe you could have been neighbours! Glad you enjoyed all the different types of fungi, couldn't belive how many we found! I just used my phone, a mid range Samsung for the photos, I should have bought the TG6, I do still take it out from time to time and it's definitely great for macro! We absolutely need to visit Brownsea, Kat has mentioned it a couple of times this year, the trouble is the "list" just keeps growing of placesto visit lol, I'm sure you guys know that feeling! There were definitely soem Willie shaoed fungi, Badger pointed out one or two! It's been a beautifully long one here too, unseasonably warm, the colours have lasted longer than I can remember 🍂
I think my favourite was the Devil’s Finger fungi, very distinctive and very alien like. Not sure about those slimey smelly ones lol! 😊 Well done on hitting 2000 subs, fantastic achievement! Keep making great content… bring the energy ❤

It's pretty awesome, a big down side if I'm honest, you never feel 100% disconnected from society, you can always hear the rumblings of Portsmouth & Southampton through the trees, still beautiful 😍 👍 ❤️

Love me some fungus! OMG donkeys are my favorite! They are so sweet! Wow, I have never heard of devil's fingers. How cool are they? What a pile of cool fungus on that tree stump. This is my kinda video - all of the animals AND fungus? Merry Christmas to me I love it! I love the little bangs on the highland cattle. I just want to go brush them. You can't tell that I like animals at all right??? Jelly fungus is way cool. Great walk-through shots with mushrooms in the foreground - excellent creative videography. Those big fallen trees look a little spooky too, especially if there was some mist or fog in the air. They are like works of art on the forest floor. The bright yellow is eye catching. Picking a favorite is so hard, but I really liked the jelly fungus, it's so different looking compared to my US fungi. What a fantastical video my friends. Loved every second of it. Fungus among us! ~RVA~

I'm back ! Guys this was really enjoyable and educational, I know nothing of fungi / fungus and I was fascinated to see so many different kinds and some rare like the nail fungus . You both did so well in teaching us and I think it was Kat that put all of the info in the description box, thanks ! This was sooo interesting that there are pigs, ponies, horses, sheep, donkeys, cattle allowed to roam the land at different times of the year and because of their poop the fungus / funghi flourishes . I was genuinely amazed at this place and how residents of the New Forest are allowed to gather wood , clay and peat from the land . This place sounds like the garden of Eden hehe. Ceri I loved when you hugged that tree and you thought it was a slug 🤭 I thought the devil's fingers was weird and the jelly fungus did look like a brain , but loved the porcelain fungus even though its common , that was my favourite, though the rare nail fungus was so pretty too. .Really enjoyed this one . 2K as well , so good LLONGYFARCHIADAU ! Ceri & Kat, fantastic fungi🍄 hunting and those Devil's Fingers are well cool👍 Though of course nothing better than Poo Fungus👍 and Fungi Eye should be a fungus in itself👍 It looked like a great day exploring in the wonderful New Forest. Love that there are common pasture rights and that a variety of domestic animals get to graze, especially the 🐷I definitely had Funguys😊

Awesome folks. It's funny how we expect certain flowers, fungi etc to be bigger, re the devil's fingers. I remember being rather taken aback with the small stature of my first bee orchids (controversial, but an overrated orchid for me 😬). My initial thought on the brown bracket fungus was a beefsteak fungus, past its best. I've seen them on both oak and sweet chestnut. I'm a long way from 100 per-cent though.....your ID might be closer to the mark. The bolete is almost certainly one of the Leccinum species. It's years since I last visited the New Forest and there are so many speciality species there I'd like to see, stag beetles being one and the wild gladiolus as well. Congrats on the 2000 subs too. Ah evening lovelies 🎉. Hurrah for an autumn walk with tea in Valhalla!! This is so interesting I’ve often wished to be able to Identify fun guys but wouldn’t know where to start. So watching this gives a little insight into how many different varieties there actually. I should know or learn really as my cousin is an expert 😅. Ooh porcelain ones I know them cos I saw them in a forest I camped in last year and got home and looked them up. Beautiful autumnal day and a bit of free parking 🅿️ too. Bonus. The new forest is just beautiful 🤩. Never been so enjoyed coming along with you both. 😂😂😂😂Ceri jumping at the slug 🐌 fungi 😅😅 A pleasure to watch this guys thanks for sharing 🎉

Thanks for an enlightening autumnal experience. While I know little to nothing of wild fungi, I'm always game to learn. The New Forest reminds me so much of the woodlands here in Maine. A reminder that about 250 million years ago, North America (Maine and England) were joined in a single continent known as Pangea (I'm sure Kat knows this). Cheers!
