Valley of the Rocks Walk & Riding the WORLD'S Steepest Water Powered Railway, Best of Exmoor

The Valley of the Rocks is a stunning, and unique, ridged cliff in a dry valley looking over the Bristol channel. The valley sits within the Exmoor National Park, Devon, just outside of the quaint town of Lynton and the harbour of Lynmouth, an area affectionately known as 'England's little Switzerland'. We parked for free in a layby (approx EX35 6ND), up the steep Countisbury hill road that leads into Lynmouth, there is also lots of paid parking in Lynmouth itself.
We walked down into the harbour via the South-West Coast Path, from here we could see the spectacular Lynton and Lynmouth Railway, the World's steepest, fully water powered funicular railway and the only fully water powered railway in Britian. It is typically Victorian, ingenious and elegant. Ceri was so looking forward to hitching a ride, however, I was route master and had decided we were all hiking up to the Valley of the Rocks and taking the train back down, he was sad.
We toured around Lynmouth crossing over the East Lyn River and took a moment at the 2002 memorial cross that marked the 50th anniversary of the flooding disaster that took the lives of 34 people and destroyed many of the buildings in Lynmouth, which have now been rebuilt.
We made our way uphill via the roadway, crossing over the railway bridge and heading back onto the South West Coast Path. We were greeted by feral goats, which have been a fixture of this landscape for hundreds of years. The path is in excellent condition, and provides amazing views of South Wales. Soon we were met with a fork in the path, you can either go up to the ridge and walk along the top of the rocky cliff or keep to the Coast Path. We decided to take the high path. We popped out straight onto the epic ridged cliffs that link the valley together, utterly strange but beautiful in appearance and so much fun to walk along. The drops are pretty daunting so beware it isn't for everyone but it's not overtly dangerous. Also, there is a paid carpark inside the valley itself, so it can be experienced by people of all abilities.
After a million photos and many cups of tea in our new mugs that were sent to us after winning a competition by KZread channel Vagabond Turtle, we headed back off along the Coast Path.
We made our way up and through the town of Lynton to the railway station. At the time of writing, it is three pounds thirty per adult for a ticket to ride, they take card. The cars work via a balance system using water piped in from the West Lyn River and double-cabled pulleys. It does not require any electrical power to operate and has a unique braking arrangement that utilises water instead of oil as hydraulic fluid, incredible. Once we got back down into Lynmouth we took a walk along the harbour wall and back to the East Lyn River. We followed the river into the woodland where we turned uphill along the 'Sparrows Path', which is steep and winding but enveloping in the best way. We headed towards a viewing point, once again looking out over the channel. From here we were forced to drop down to the road but were quickly back on the Coast Path heading towards the cars. All that amazing beauty in just 8 miles, a perfect day out.

❤❤❤ love you both and I’m so glad the mugs are being part of this wonderful walking and you like them! Such a great area, really cannot imagine nicer, this is really a hike for my taste, I would love to do it myself, the interesting background stories and facts just add to the beauty, even if one of those stories is quite grim. Glad to see though that they rebuilt the whole area and one can only hope it’s gonna thrive now. I would have definitely gone fossil hunting too 😊 especially with such a spectacular view behind! Good evening our favourite Turtles 🐢 💕 the mugs are coming away on our next holiday too, we genuinely love them, great quality and kept the tea nice and warm on the cliffside! @@TeaInValhalla Thank you so much, as said I am very glad they turned out to be so good :) We also have two of them ;) and I also like the quality, you can even use them to warm stuff on the stove, but that gives them a little bit of wear :) Lexicon might not even be the right word because I think that only refers to linguistics, and then Kat seems to know EVERYTHING :) History is a great passion to many of us, and it is just lovely to see a fellow geek :) Have a great weekend guys, love and hugs from us, and GREAT VIDEO as always! A spectacular place, never heard of the valley before but would like to visit, outstanding filming. Love the droning. When I was a little girl I went on a funicular somewhere near to Weston super Mare with my dad, it was probably this one, I have fond memories of it and it was great to see your filming of the railway. Well done, I enjoyed it very much xx

I really enjoyed watching the funicular railway running, a very special piece of history and wonderful to see it in such perfect working condition, long may it continue. The Bristol Channel has never looked so clean, the water seemed tropical. I am not sure about balancing along that ridge, I hope it was safer than it appeared. Beautiful valley though, I can understand its' appeal. Hope you are both keeping well, Winnie

I can’t imagine how you guys keep your composure in talking through all the details and information about these places, while hiking steep paths, and absolutely not murdering the speech with heavy breathing like me😂😂😂 what a brilliant hike! Gorgeous weather, liked the fluffy clouds. Those bench in the middle of the path offer such stunning views of the coast. Kat’s hunt for fossils, can really see the excitement and passion. Haha Absolutely enjoyed this vlog guys! Keep safe in these awesome adventures 😁

What a beautiful hike! Quite steep on some areas with some exposures but the views are surely rewarding! Amazing shots on top of those boulders with views of the coasts and wonderful cloud formations. Interesting to know about the world's steepest water powered railway. Thanks for taking us along.

Ceri & Kat, free parking is where it is at👍 A beautiful day and a beautiful coast to explore☀👍 Picture postcard perfect views over the sea with the dappled clouds and light and the shadows of the cliffs⛅The feral goats were cool🐐 Great scrambling in the Valley of the Rocks and loved that rock window. Hopefully Dave wasn't put in too much danger in the making of this film😊 The water powered funicular is amazing looking and quite a drop. A good pooping walk to finish😊

Wowsers Ceri and Kat, the views you captured on this video were absolutely stunning!😍. Utter beauty is right Kat, couldn't have put it better ourselves! Always something super special about being on the coast, especially on a beautiful sunny day 🌞. Fossils galore! They were so interesting👍. Watch out there dangerous Dave, Ceri and Kat will have you balancing on cliff edges for those likes!🤣😱. That 'arty photo' through the natural rock picture frame was a keeper🤩. To finish off the day with the water powered train, what a round off to a perfect day! Great footage of the train too, we have never seen anything like that. What a cool thumbnail! Look at you all colorful Ceri! Mustard is your color. Wow, the coast is stunning! Fossil hunting too? Fantastic! The water color is so turquoisey. It just gets better and better. I can definitely see why someone might be inspired in this location. The railway is really interesting. The fact that its water-powered is extraordinary. Love the harbor area. I can smell the salt water all the way from here. What a gorgeous day outdoors. ~RVA~

Good evening Ceri and Kat. How cool is the Valley of the rocks? Almost like some of the mountains have come to the coast. A great start to the day with the free parking. You certainly have a knack of finding them. Looked like there were one or two precarious drops there so certainly a case of not looking down. Looked an epic place with so much to see. Great video as usual guys of a really beautiful place ( and murder attempts of Ceri by Kat and a little Robin by Ceri 🤭 ) Never heard of it before but it's stunning. Sad about the lives lost in the floods and its nice that they have a cross there to commemorate 50yrs of flooding. Pasties and fudge sounded great ! Loved the drone footage on top of the rocks , the formations were stunning and the view where Kat stood looking towards the sea was gorgeous. The place where you went on that amazing railway was great and I can see how it was bustling in Victorian times . Amazing that the train does 150 trips a day . Loved the big chair with little Ceri 😃 and that harbour down there was beautiful with the boats and pier. Really loved this one , one of my favourites. Hey guys 😊 you can't beat a bit of free parking 😁👌 I've been to Linton and lynmouth a few times as we have friends living down there, and also visited valley of the rocks too😁 as well as the waters meet walk 😁 the little cafe there is brilliant 🤤 beautiful views along the walk too 😍 great drone work 👌 Ceri doesn't share food 🤣🤣 neither do I 🤣🤣🤣 love the matching mugs 🥰 I've eaten in this cafe at the bottom of the railway many times, but never ridden on it, I'll definitely have to do it next time I'm down 👍 great video as always guys, catch you soon, atb Paul 🙏🏕️🏕️🏕️😁

Good morning and happy hump day Paul, love that you know this area so well, it's a fantastic part of Exmoor, so much to see and do! The cafes and pits stops make it hard to keep moving, Kat had to put the snack blinkers on me lol! The funicular is an amazing bit of engineering and well worth a ride, my first go but definitely won't be my last! Just brilliant you two Loved every second of this again. We love that place - so beautiful along that coastline - maybe the most dramatic in England? We had many family holidays around there. Love Kats knowledge of the geology - the Valley of the Rocks footage is unrivalled I think. Absolutely superb 😍😍😍 Just before the pandemic hit, we had a long weekend with mates who were moving house - the wife bought a big heavy cast iron coal scuttle without telling her husband. Trouble is this was in Lynton and the car was parked where yours was so he had to carry it back. Lots of strange looks!! 😃😃. And many long discussions in the pub on the relative merits of the workings of the Funicular railway Brought back great memories. Thanks Ceri and Kat 👍👍🙏🙏👍

If only we could harness the power of Waterford more 💧 💪 oooh I wonder if that was the Blue Ball Inn 🤔 Definitely agree this little snip of coastline has to be up there with some of the most dramatic in England, I can only think that parts of the Lizard would argue that 🪨 🌊 🦎 Wouldn't fancy carrying a cast iron skillet up n down that road lol, well done guys! 💪 Have a great weekend, Ceri and Kat ☕️ ❤️ 👍 🗺 😀

Hi Ceri and Kat and Dave. Great day hiking and exploring! You guys always have so much fun! Beautiful area… great to see the bay, and Wales. I enjoyed learning about the costal path and the Valley of Rocks… cool geology and fossils. Some of the sections on the ridge seemed kinda steep - whew!
