Buttermere Fells Circular Walk, Lake District Hike: Dodd, Red Pike, High Stile, High Crag, Haystacks

This stunning 9.5 mile circular walk, begins in Buttermere and takes in five (nope! Its actually four*) Wainwright fells (Dodd, Red Pike, High Stile, High Crag, & Haystacks) a tarn, some easy scrambling and of course, Buttermere lake.
There is lots of paid parking within the village but we managed to nab some free parking close to the crossroads, near to St James Church, this area fills up fast (CA13 9UZ).
We started on the east side of Buttermere walking through a working farmyard and joining up with the Shoreline Path, keeping Buttermere lake on our left as we walked towards the very pretty tumbling water of Sour Milk Gill. Once we reached the Gill the path leads directly uphill through some mixed woodland and up towards Bleaberry Tarn. Such a tranquil spot, we were compelled to sit here, drink tea and take in the atmosphere.
We soon started our ascent on a very obvious path up to Red Pike, named after the red rock that dominates its' geology. We decided to pop over to Dodd (641m), a very short distance from our planned path. The views from Dodd are truly beautiful, looking over the whole Buttermere valley.
On the way up to Red Pike (755m) there is some scree, not awful but its worth knowing. After a short corridor we soon reached the top. Lush, no other word for it, we could see all of Ennerdale, Crummock, Buttermere and even Scotland as the cloud lifted. We had tea here too 😀.
We then started out along the wide ridge heading South-east leading to our highest point of the day, High Stile (806m). Staying on the obvious ridge path still facing South-east we soon meet our next fell, High Crag (745m).
The drop down from High Crag changes from a normal fell descent into a very steep, very loose scree that needs careful footing. Eventually we dropped down to one last lump before another sharp path descending into Scarth Gap, the windy and slightly boggy gap that laid between us and Haystacks.
The hike up Haystacks, Wainwrights favourite fell, is a mix of steady ascent and simple scrambling, it is pretty easy to see the path as the fell is very poplar and the rocks are well worn from footfall. We found the stunning and poignant Innominate Tarn where Alfred Wainwright's ashes are scattered. After a quick pic on one of Haystacks peaks (597m) we made our way back to Scarth Gap, via the path we came up on.
Once we reached the gap we headed back down to Buttermere lake following the very distinct and poplar Scarth Gap Pass path. We passed some old copper mines and eventually met up with the Shoreline Path, which we followed back to the farm, Buttermere village and Spartycar!
A wonderful day and a cracking route we strongly recommend.
Thank you for being here, all the best, Ceri & Kat!
*Mistakes were made! Dodd is not a Wainwright, sorry about that. We popped up it last minute, however, it really is a lovely spot to look down on the Buttermere valley.

So brilliant that you do the hiking in beautiful landscapes while I have chips and a cool drink watching your latest adventure🍻 Before the age of youtube I only knew about the Lake District through reading and that gave me wrong ideas about the landscape! Now thanks to you and other intrepid youtubers I know better (but you are the most charming ones of the bunch mind you). The Lake District is beautiful and today's trip showed some nice parts giving me wanderlust! And even when cloudy the place for tea and cookies looked just right - and then later getting high up is fun (rain is no bother for me watching indoors:-) So until next time stay safe and enjoy the lovely green spaces around you! All the best, Ant

Looked like a fabulous day out and the clouds lifted nicely for you so you could soak in those awesome views. You have to love a bit of scree. I've been trying to find Butterdale on the map cos it sounds worth a visit. I always walk by the church in Buttermere and take photographs of the outside but never thought about actually going in. Thanks for showing me what I've been missing. Really enjoyed the entertaining video 👍 Paul ❤️🥾🏔

Well guys what can I say, welcome back to Cumbria, and possibly my favourite area of it 💓🥰 so many awesome climbs and views in such a small area 😍 sour milk gill is a climb and a half to bleaberry Tarn, a pure thigh burner 🤣 the Tarn is a lovely respite on the way to red pike, but the views on the way 😍😍😍 and a perfect place for a ☕ and a swim too 👌 the last bit to the summit absolutely killed me 🤣🤣🤣 but the views from the top are worth it, by far my best camp ever🥰😻 I recommend you try it with a 20 kg camping pack on 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 might I say Ceri's beard is looking mighty fine 😉😁 and on to haystacks, AW's favourite and a very special place for me too 💓 you guys sure pumped in the miles on this one 🥵 Haystacks is a bit more scrambly than most expect, but well worth it, and inominate Tarn is eerily peaceful 💓 trust me though long legs don't make it easier 😅🤣🤣🤣 congratulations on an absolutely epic walk and a truly awesome video, hopefully I can catch up with you both when you next visit the Lakes, love as always Paul 🙏🏕️🏕️🏕️😁

Wow. That was quite a hike you both did there guys. The views from the lake were epic. The path up looked a bit steep in places but the walk did look incredible. Hope you both are all good. I just wish that these lovely mountains were just a bit closer as I struggle driving up to Snowdonia let alone the lake district. You both looked like you were having a great time. Hope Ceri was OK after slipping down. All the best guys.🙂🙂👍👍

Beautiful beginning on the shoreline path. That lake looked like it was just waiting for one of you to jump in. I love that Kat didn't tell you about the hike for the day. No deets, just get your boots and lets go. That little pond on your way up..... I dream of such magical places such as this. So worth the work to get up high on those mountain tops to look out as far as you can see. What an amazing living on the edge moment on the stone path on the way up right on that cliffside. What a great adventure!!! Great video. ~RVA~
