Hiking Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) via the Watkin Path & Rhyd Ddu Ridge
The Watkin path up Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) is considered to be the most scenic but steepest of the main six routes to the top of the highest mountain in Wales with an ascent of 1,015 meters. Often the quietest path due to the loose scree section that joins the Watkin to the Rhyd Ddu path.
We parked early in a free parking area (LL55 4NH) close to the bottom of the Watkin marker stone. These spaces are usually gone pretty quickly but there is a large paid carpark with a toilet opposite the start of the path. The path which initially winds through stunning woodland, is obvious and in good condition, some of the paths were once used by the South Yr Wyddfa Slate Quarry, and many remains of the huge quarry works can still be seen. We walked alongside incredibly beautiful waterfalls and dipping pools that are normally an attraction especially in the warm months.
We soon came across Gladstone Rock, named after the Prime Minster William Gladstone who officially opened the path in 1892, and the first designated footpath in Britain! The path itself' was the creation of Sir Edward Watkin, hence the path's name, an entrepreneur and MP. Soon the path gets steeper as you ascend the southern slopes of Yr Wyddfa. Eventually, we reached a short plateau where we could look over the breathtaking waters of the Glasyn and Llyn Llydaw, the Miners and Pyg tracks and the entire horseshoe. We consumed tea here. Marvellous.
The scree, and easy scramble, came next. Dreaded by many but not as frightening as most believe. It isn't a simple piece of path as it needs considered foot steps and navigation. It is loose scree and a couple of times, due to larger rock faces, we had to use our hands but it is very doable. Ceri does not have a head for heights and did feel a touch unsteady at times but nothing awful. We met up with the steps the stewards of Eryri (Snowdonia) have placed to prevent erosion and make the path a lot safer. It took around 30 odd minutes from the bottom of the scree to the top of the steps.
We then made our way up to the peak. It was an unusually warm Autumn day but was not too busy on top. We did the legally required top of the World photos and arm pumps and headed of to drink tea, again. We decided we would take the Rhyd Ddu ridge path back. It is utterly stunning, some of the best views in Eryri can be found on this ridge. We used this to make our way down to a mining track parallel to the Watkin. The walk down can be a bit steep in places and we needed to use a path that winds through scree, nothing terrible but worth knowing, could be dodgy in bad weather.
We soon connected back up with the Watkin path and followed it back through the forest.
9.4 miles in the end, worth every step.

Guys that was so dramatic & atmospheric. We love the Watkins path even though we only went up to the point where it becomes steep. It was a shame that we didn't go a bit further to see those magnificent views over Llyn Llydaw & the pointed peak of Y Lliwedd. The summit area looked like something out of Lord Of The Rings with all that fog drifting in & out plus that gorgeous golden light. The path you took back down is the same one we once did with our daughter after we had taken the train up. That ridge was very scary & Michelle & our daughter who was only 10 at that time were very scared. I wasn't much better either. When we got down the road from the Watkins path we found that there were no buses running that day to take us back to Llanberis even though it was a Bank Holiday with lots of walkers about. In the end a national park ranger took us & a few other stranded walkers back round to Llanberis. It was great to see what that final section of the Watkins path looked like. I don't think we would ever do that bit as it did look quite hairaising as could be seen on Ceri's face. Lol. That was a very good video with lots of tension going up the dodgy bits. I could hear rumbling in the background of some of the shots. I imagine that was the jets from RAF Valley on Anglesey. Take care guys. Martin and Michelle. 🙂🙂❤️❤️👍👍

That looks like a great route onto Snowdon. It looks such a pretty route that I’d need all day as I’d have to keep stopping to take photos! Looks like you had some nice Autumnal weather too. My least favourite descent was Grisedale Pike in the Lake District. I’m sure part of my knees are still left on that trail as it’s so steep. What a great place to hike! The lower parts look nice too! Here we also have leafs on trees! The fall has been delayed here as well! That summit was great, the teaspot even better! 😉 That ridge looked challenging. I'm a bit like Kat, but getting older, I do get scared a bit more... What makes me happy? Brilliant guys, such a great mountain to climb with numerous ways up and down, I done it earlier on in the year, up the Rhyd Ddu path then down the Ranger path, a must say you had much better views than I did, would love to do it when it’s nice, going up the Watkin path looked good👍, looked like a few tricky loose sections. Ceri & Kat, a cracking path running alongside a proper mountain river👍 A beautiful day with lovely light☀ and some singing echoing through the valley would have been cool🎶 A sip of tea on the lips is worth miles on the feet👣 A place fitting of Arthurian legend👍 and appropriately steep towards the summit👍 Superbly quiet on your walk in and no queues on the summit👍 The walk out wasn't too bad looking either, can't beat a good ridge👍 Have had some hairy ones coming off hills in the dark, perhaps not taking the best line of descent😊 A cool trip👍👍

ARDDERCHOG! 🏴 Diolch yn fawr ! Loved this and it is such a beautiful and scenic hike though quite strenuous in parts . You got amazing footage and I love seeing the old quarry remains, this is just such a magical and special place and very beautiful. Very cute goat and kids you captured too and great choice of tea spot :) The summit of Yr Wyddfa is very beautiful and I loved that cute dog :) Good choice of route coming down too, love the waterfalls. Yay the travelling, tea drinking duo 👏🙌☕️ this was a great hike guys some of which we covered after doing crib goch which was great to see from your chosen route which was lovely with the pools and waterfalls! Well done Ceri on the scramble, love your 🪨 mate was there to help you again 👍 very atmospheric at the summits and I believe I captured two moomins drinking tea 😂. Wow Ceri you did so well on that ridge I had a funny tummy and jelly legs watching you knowing the feeling I get on ridges! Great route that guys thanks for taking us along! Love those waterfalls and old mining buildings on the way up. And you could see Portmeirion in the distance too, what a view 😃 In search of Tea Ridge 🫖 Great views of Crib Goch and those other routes up onto Snowdon. I think, when I did Snowdon in 1986, I came down that Miners Track as I was staying at the YHA at Pen-y-Pass at the time 🛌 Well done on that scramble up to the top, looked a real challenge! There is no way I could come down that path. It isn't a fear of heights, I feel like a Lemming. It's a strange urge that I have never succumbed to, horrible feeling. As for the path that has freaked me out the most...... none. I only started in June this year, so I have not found one yet. No doubt I will in the future. Tinnitus, vertigo, and a fear of heights, and you still push yourself up there. Ceri & Kat, you certainly have my respect. Great vlog, thank you for sharing. I've really enjoyed it.

Evening Kat and Ceri. We can say this is really fantastic hiking trail. The trail is full of different climbs, from easy to slightly more difficult (we can't say that there were extreme difficult climbs😁). The best is the Labrador at the top with big question mark above the head "What are you humans doing. Isn't it enough that i climbed up there". We love when you are above the clouds...it looks like you were in heaven. Nice video. Take care you two and have a nice Sunday. Sretana and Zac.🖐😄🤗

Ceri, you did very well with the exposure, naughty for Kat to chuckle, even if you did look like you'd seen a ghost. A wonderful route up Yr Wyddfa, fabulously varied and beautiful. I could watch this video through again and still be in awe. Hope you are both well, Winnie

The two that travelled with tea! Loved all the viking references in this one guys. Those views really started to get magnificent the higher you got. Being able to see Crib Goch from that aspect was really special for us as we had poor visibility for the most part on that route and only occasionally got the views over to your route! A rock that has become a friend on an exposed scramble? I like that! Love the Watkin stones, got some atmospheric pictures next to them, you had the same visibility we did from Snowdon! Seems that summit is permanently encased in fog! Over 2000 subscribers and nobody up there recognised you? Come on now Snowdon summiteers, your amongst youtube royalty! What a lovely circuit and of course, free parking! Quite a narrow ledge on the way down, lovely clear views though towards the Irish Sea. Would love to see some pictures of those trams running, might have to google them..

Good morning and happy hump day Nick, thank you so much for joining us on this one, love the thought of us hiking this route and you and Jill over in the knife edge Crib Goch, radioing in for tea stops! ☕️❤️⛰️ Yea the summit is often up in the clouds, even on a lovley day like this we watch the summit in and out of the clag all day ⛅️ Funny you should mention being recognised, not on the summit of Snowdon, but the next day randomly in am antiquities shop in Porthmadog, Kat was spotted! 👀 Yes the route is a beauty and easy to see why it's held in such high regards 🙌 Thanks for your support and feedback as always, you are great! @@TeaInValhalla oh wow, glad you got spotted there guys! Whenever i think of Wales and the South West i always picture you guys, you have become synonymous with the countryside! I really couldn’t imagine you climbing its capital peak without getting recognised! Im glad it happened shortly after! 😅 think jill is still grateful for the incredible amount of fog we had the day we conquered Crib Goch, i still tease her and say we need to go back and experience it on a clear day to say that we have done it! Even without the visible exposure it was still pretty terrifying! 😱

@@TeaInValhalla Yes it certainly helped, id seen photos of what the exposure looked like so i knew i had to cling on for dear life. Will definitely return in better conditions to do it again! We’ve done far worse since and survived! Quite well prepared for Crimbo, have one or two things left to do. Some last minute buying and a thumbnail to do for this weeks vid. Hope you guys are all set ♥️🎄

Tremendous excursion into the mountains folks. If I ever get round to doing Snowdon again I think that is the route I'd like to do. I did the Horseshoe years ago but the weather was grim and if I'm honest didn't enjoy it a great deal. Thanks for sharing such a wonderful day and Merry Christmas to you both.🎄
