Snowdon via the Pyg Track

Snowdon via the Pyg Track
🎬 In this weeks video I reunite with an old friend amidst the stunning views around Snowdonia. It’s been four years since I last ventured up Snowdon, with the last time being the first day of lockdown back in 2020.
🥾 Gaz and I have completed Snowdon together many times always via the Llanberis back in the day, however today I would be leading this guided hike up the renowned Pyg Track and descending via the Miners Track…a route I’ve done many times solo.
🇦🇺The motivation for this hike was to reconnect with a lifelong friend Gaz, who had flown in all the way from Australia for his brothers wedding - we hadn’t seen each other in a decade.
🏔️ Snowdon, or should I say Yr Wyddfa, stands at 1,085m (3,560ft) above sea level and is the tallest mountain in Wales. The Pyg Track is one of the most popular routes running alongside Crib Goch, an epic ridge walk. Even through the wind was almost non-existent making it near perfect conditions, I decided against the ridge walk for today as Gaz and his bothers weren’t equipped in the right footwear so I’ll come back for that another day.

Its probably the most popular route up the mountain, but its certainly not the easiest. Its all on rock, much of it heavily worn by the now, millions of visitors over the years, and in wet weather, its very slippery. My choice for the easiest way up the mountain, is the Snowdon Ranger, as its all on a very easy to follow gravelly rock. Its pretty exposed to the prevailing weather, but its still the safest way up the mountain.

I did the 14 peaks (about 13 hours) nearly 60 years ago. As a birthday and 40th wedding anniversary celebration, we are staying a few days in April in Blaenau Ffestiniog. My wife wants me to take her up Snowdon. I had forgotten one could bypass Crib ful.Goch, as I had never done that, but it's a relief as I was worried about my wife going over that, so this is very help

That’s a great achievement in 13hrs and I’m yet to do the Welsh 3000’s I need to add it to my list of things to do. Yeah that’s wise not going up that way but I’m sure she’ll be fine on this route. It’s a really good route to get up and no drops. My gf doesn’t like drops either but she’s obviously fine on this. Only tricky thing is the parking at the bottom…you need to book and it’s pricey now.

Yes, it’s classed as the tourist route however it does just go up and up constantly and is the longest route up. I’ve done that very route about 30 times now however prefer other routes up there. Hope you managed to get a bit of a view from up top.

Love that! How did you find it? I was back there again yesterday leading a group of 19 guys for their mental health charity although conditions were pretty brutal with torrential rain, thunder and lightening at the start and clag but in the end it cleared up as we were descending so all good.

@@krisgleave absolutely loved it was my first time climbing Snowdon and done it with two friends and we couldn't have asked for a better day plus after all the information from your video we had no worries or surprises as we know what to expect. Weather was lovely and blue clear skys so we was blessed for our first trip there. We hit the summit for half 8 and only had to share it with about 10 people so all around amazing day and it's got us planning our next hiking trip and can't wait for it

The Pyg track is a much better route so you can go up and down that or up that and down the miners as they start and stop at the same point. Parking is tricky at the start it’s expensive. If you want a slightly different route and easier too, there’s also the Rangers Route. That joins up to the Llanberis.

Loved this video, Kris. I will try to do the PYG for the first time this year before December. The ridge you asked about after the train went by you after you summited is Rhyd Ddu..£4/6 parking. my favourite track to walk. I often think about going up Rhyd Ddu and coming down Ranger or Vice versa, but Rhyd is just at my peak level of ability with heights.. Great video. I've still not wild camped yet. I just need to realise no one is going to join me and go alone but I'll get there..

I missed this comment only just spotted it. Aah brilliant for the name of the ridge I need to check it out as it looks awesome and can’t believe I actually never looked up that way before considering over been up Snowdon over 40 times haha. The Ranger is a nice route too as starts from a little railway and nice reflection in the water at the bottom of the opposite peak. Get yourself out on your wild camp haha. It’s tricky this time of year with the weather and all the hours in a tent but you’ll enjoy it.

With all the different routes it draws me bk every year. Cheers for that, yeah there would be a while in the tent this time if year.. might be next year 🤔. Take care bud.

@krisgleave No worries. Yea it went really well I took my auntie up the Llanberis and down the rangers but their is a path that cuts through the mountains that leeds back onto the Llanberis it was a great walk. A was shocked at how much the weather changes on the way up. One minute it's 18°c next minute it's -5 and snowing

  • @krisgleave

@jaywhitney789 haha yes it does change a lot in the mountains. Typically for each 100m you ascend it’ll drop a degree in temperature and often increase similar with wind speed too. The rangers is always overlooked but it’s a lovely route isn’t it. Great views over the lake and back to the little train station. Sounds like a good day

  • @krisgleave

    @krisgleave

    11 күн бұрын

Yeah you’ll be fine with that. Well done on you first hike. Your route up Scafell is quite a quick route so yes the Pyg Track will take you longer. I advise going early to avoid the queues of people at the summit as it does get busy especially this time of year. Pyg Track up and the Miners Down is a good way to go and easy to navigate too. The path down to the miners you’ll fine quite steep but you descend quickly and then a long more or less flat path back. Good luck

It’s a good route isn’t it but always prefer going up the Pyg and down the Miners. The miners is mostly flat when you get to the tarn and an easy walk back to the car park. I believe the ridge going up there is Y Gribin and yes the path to the left is Y Lliwedd which I’ve never done so definitely have to get up there soon. Looks ace doesn’t it.
