Walking Tour of Cleeve Abbey: England's BEST Preserved Abbey, English Heritage, History

A walking tour through 800 years of history at one of the best preserved abbeys in Britain, Cleeve Abbey, Somerset, England. Now owned and cared for by English Heritage, the Cistercian abbey is a late 12th century hidden gem, tucked away in a sleepy area of Somerset. Plenty of parking at TA23 0PS, we are members so our day here was free but there is a charge for non-members so please check the website for details.
The Abbey is very special due to its' incredible condition, it even has an intact 13th century handmade tile floor depicting heraldic symbols. In 1536 Cleeve Abbey was ordered to close by King Henry VIII during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, however, a friend of Henry's asked to have the land and buildings for himself, the King agreed and the Abbey became a country house. This actually saved some of the Abbey buildings and prevented it from being totally destroyed. Later, as fortunes dipped in the 18th century, the abbey became a farm.
There is so much to see here, the atmosphere is awesome. There is monk graffiti on the walls and painted murals in the abbots chambers, it feels alive with the history that shaped the land, eerie and mysterious yet inviting. We looked in every space more than once, drawn to the stone and wood carvings, many of which have hidden details of those who created them. So much of the dormitories and other living spaces of the monks remain that it forces an understanding of the era, of the lives and actions that were played out here.
This is truly a gem in the English Heritage crown, an absolute 'Must See' for just about anyone.

What i love also halfway through this,is like me your both smileing so much,as you love walking in these stunning places,and imagine what life would have been like in them days.Love the office of the prior,with the silent monks.yay a toilet,and shutters,le lavatory lol.the dry room is so unusual,the shapes are stunning,so light and airy.ceri the vandal lol.love the laying down on the floor ceri,the chapter house"hubby out boarding school learnt latin,he said it was a waste of time as all he can read is gravestones.Sad about the babies,love the favt ceri and kat not packed there,wish i was there i love it when theres no crowds.Always wondered if could bring my metal detector there and have a dig around,proberly get kicked out lol.hubby did a bad abbot joke,he couldnt get out the abbot!!.first ever cat flap,the dorm was massive,the dockies love kat ,big hug.comment of the day"you dont get that in IKEA"oak doors with a lovely boat.the floor is stunning"theres one near me were they cover with soil for about 20 years,then every now and then they put the floor on show"forgot what its called"stripped lions.nice bench and a cup of tea.sad about the sad about the vagrants.we really really loved this video tea and kat.have a lovely week and stay safe debs xx ps and dont worry about my #challenge,i can understand if its not your"excuse the pun"cup of tea 🫖debs

We really lucked out, this was filmed back in April, a Saturday too and there was only 3 other people that we saw all morning! We were there from 10am till around 1400hrs, very much worth a visit and a lap or two! Your challenge is very much in our minds eye, we won't make any promises, will see what we can do! Wonderful tour of Cleve Abbey! You show it so well, I can really picture how the monks lived day to day. It really is personalized by seeing the beautiful old tiles and then the graffiti and old emoji!! Lol. Great to review what the monks did for the community around them and how bad it was when they left. Wonderful to have all these Abbey buildings preserved!! Thanks Ceri and Kat!! 👍⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ceri & Kat. a stunning walk and talk through history, where it sounds like power, politics, money and food banks were as prevalent as today👍 I could just imagine the smell and taste of the bread🍞 they once made👍 Loved the big thick stone walls, those wonderful ceilings and the windows with that lovely light coming through, can also imagine those 'oaky' smells. Definitely a monk look with Ceri when you see it compared😊 Loved the catflap and learning about the neccessitarium and dookies👍😊 Really cool👍👍

Captivating 😀 I very much enjoyed this video, the history and heritage is fascinating. Incredible artwork & architecture throughout the monastery. The dry room’s ceiling is rather amazing. Cat flap! Brilliant! 🐱 The hand stamped tiles are really nice too. It looks like a big site to explore and walk around. Thanks for showing us a round, you both did a great job being our tour guides 🥰

Very well preserved indeed. Kaat you could certainly be a tour guide for the Abbey with all of your knowledge. I love old artitechure. You guys had a beautiful day with blue skies to go exploring around the grounds. Excellent video with so much history. Loved it. ~RVA~

Love that roof in the Abbey. Sooo well preserved too. Love the energy you both have Ceri & Kat. Wow i love those old ovens & fireplaces. The restoration is fantastic.

Never been here,Love the wooden ceiling.Love the dance 💃.love the cute shop,i mean we will deff be going to this place its stunning.looking inside ,they dont make them like that no more,love the double fireplace its sublime.The 15 th cent timber is stunning,bread or a PASTY!! in the oven NO school kids,you lucky 2 lol.This Abbey is simply stunning,the wood architecture is amazing,wonder if they pledge it??.The curved abbots room was again amazing,Love the hand painted chamber,the lion and the dragon of st margret is stunning.OMG the monks were fans of mtv,i always hated mtv as they started the graffiti,turns out it was these naughty monks,i would whip them,but they do that to them selfs alot.I have heard of the green man,a pagan symbol.love the doodleing.Love the tiles,really enjoying this tea,loved the fact you mixed it up. still watching

This place was ace and would highly recommend a visit, you won't be disappointed, maybe even sneak in your metal detector, start where the tower collapsed! Thank you so much for the tour of this abbey! Always a fan of abbey's, and it's fantastic to see so much of it preserved. I loved the tiles and the old wall plaster, and the fact they did B&B for £24 a night! Not get many places like that anymore 🤣 Kat's knowledge still astounds me every time, and remembering it all. Thank you for another fab video, all the best and have a super fantastic week ☺️💜

Another fantastic video from you Ceri and Kat, we love the way you bring your own style to each of your adventures, they are always so well executed and edited, great stuff!🤩 We really enjoyed this tour of the Abbey, totally agree it has to be the best preserved in the UK, just incredible! The monks graffiti made us chuckle, nice to see that they were human too🤭. First cat flap, amazing!😁👏🐈. We agree on the floor, would love that in our house now🥰. The more the tour went on we were astounded by the scale of the place🤯. How sad that all those books were burnt😞. Also we would love to know who the baby was and how they ended up there. Fascinating history of the dissolution of the monasteries, and again sad to hear about the human consequence to that being there was no support for the vagrants. Kat really has a gift to not only research and remember all of this history, but to recount it on camera, never ceases to impress!😁👍. Huge like from us guys😊👌. It was an absolute Tardis of a place, even after 3 laps we kept finding new things to see and share....I had to drag Kat out kicking and screaming lol! Cool place guys, I was laughing about that cat flap, the worlds first im sure😄 That cat must have been massive😆 Loved the tiled floor, Im with Kat, I wouldnt mind that at my gaff. Spooky about the baby's body, seems like a proper mystery to me! JS

Super ....We love a day out at a EH property, visited most of the Castles and Abbeys up north. in our first year of membership we racked up over £300 pounds worth of visits...We have many fave's, our No 1 has to be Rievaulx abbey.You certainly know your stuff, so many facts and figures...Loved the old Graffiti and yes it did look the Spit of Ceri.....fancy burning all those books, that's terrible....Ceri was on form dishing out the giggles on this one....Cheers Steven
