Cataphracts from the ancient world up to the 6th century AD, from all sorts of places. Equipment notes:
Achaemenid Persian (5th c BC) - 'Assyrian' type helmet, scale gorget (grivpanvar), laminar arm guards, scale horse chest and flank armour (peytral and flanchard)
Greco-Baktrian (3rd c BC) - Attic-Boeotian helmet, muscle cuirass, laminar arm guards, cloth thigh guards (pteryges), greaves, lamellar peytral
Ptolemaic (2nd BC) - Konos type helmet, linen cuirass, felt arm and leg guards, felt barding
Seleucid (1st c BC) - Konos type helmet with face mask, muscle cuirass, laminar arm guards, pteryges, greaves, scale barding, crested plate chamfron
Sarmatian (1st c AD) - Spangenhelm, scale cuirass with shoulder guards, scale barding
Sogdian (1st c AD) - Lamellar helmet, neck guard (gorget), shoulder guards (spaulders) and forearm guards (vambraces), thigh guards (cuisses)
Eastern Han (1st c AD) - lamellar helmet, thigh-length cuirass with raised collar, shoulder guards / 'sleeves' (pauldrons?), lamellar 'trousers' (my interpretation but knees seem weirdly unprotected), felt or linen peytral
Parthian (3rd c AD) - Conical spangenhelm with full-face mail aventail, thigh-length scale and plate cuirass, laminar arm guards, mail leggings (chausses), plate greaves and foot guards, scale barding
Sassanid (4th c AD) - 'thimble' type helmet with face mask, mail aventail, thigh-length lamellar cuirass, laminar arm guards, laminar leg guards, scale barding
Roman (4th c AD) - Deir el-Medina type Spangenhelm, scale shoulder guard and thigh-length cuirass, laminar arm and leg guards, scale barding
Goguryeo (5th c AD) - lamellar helmet, gorget, spaulders, cuirass, and armoured skirt, lamellar barding
Romano-Byzantine (6th c AD) - Baldenheim type helmet, lamellar spaulders and thigh-length cuirass, plate chafron, lamellar peytral and neck guard (criniere)

You mean Persian cataphracts? 😂
I love how you're dedicated enough to draw the people's facial hair and clothing even if it'll all just be covered up by the armor
Seeing hundreds or even thousands of these guys on the battlefield must've been both awe inspiring and horrifying
Should've thrown in the Jin dynasty too, those guys were beastly looking alongside the Parthians and Sassanid.
How annoying was it to draw all the scales? Looks great like always.

Lamellar is way more annoying:(( you should try it in your art:D
thanks for the great clip foojer Also nearly half of them are actually Iranian : Achaemenid , Greco-Baktrian and Selucid ones who were mainly raised from iranian people , Sarmation ,Sogdian ,Parthian and Sassanid Cataphracts
WOW, I looking to Goguryeo's 'Gaemamusa'(Cathaphract). IN HERE! The good news is Korea, cataphract is not only in Goguryeo, it also in other ancient countries of korea such as Baekje, Gaya, Silla. Because the horse armor relics have been found in the tomb of that country!
The Arthurian one was good. The Sassanid is the best in my opinion, but ovecorse all of them are good. I really liked stuff that you do man keep up the good work :)

Hey, great channel man! Just a suggestion, might not even reach you, but it’d be cool to see an evolution of Cuman-Kipchaks through the ages. they had some super cool face guard helmet designs. They actually remind me a lot of how the cataphracts looked towards the beginning of the Middle Ages, since Cumania existed around the same time. Might be cool, but either way keep up the great work!
Göktürk cataphracts during the 6th century would be cool
Woah, whats this? Double upload? Day just got a whole lot better
Nice, this channel is as good as ever.

Welcome back! Really love this new style ♥️
Amazing! The skill level is crazy good! Keep up the good work! I'm looking forward to more! :D
Honestly, it depends where the cataphract came from and also there were like 50 different patterns and types of helmets, armor, arm sleeves, etc. for people to choose from in antiquity. Specific cultures could get almost whatever they wanted if they had the money but they would mostly tend to stick to what most of the culture around them would stick to. For example a Parthian noble would buy armor and weapons/inherit armor and weapons that most other Parthian nobles did. A Parthian could buy some Gallic chainmail or a Greek linothorax if they wanted to, but they tended to choose to look like each other. There are alot of reasons for why people do things, maybe someone thought that it was the best equipment around so they bought it because their peers were using that type, or maybe it was all they could find at the time. Also those who haven't used their equipment wouldnt have to replace anything so that is also a factor. Scythians and other steppe tribes also had cataphracts and they wore equipment that is different in looks and design from Iranian, Persian, Parthian, Dahae and other peoples and tribes in the middle eastern area.
Love it. Was waiting for a new video for so long time. Thanks

@foojer
2 жыл бұрын
Procopius doesnt seem to mention horse armour for the Byzantines (tho he does mention Gothic cavalry with horse armour), though an anonymous treatise a bit earlier than him does recommend horse armour for front-ranking cavalry. The Strategikon explicitly recommends horse armour. So it's probably safe to say that it was in use in this period (tho there isn't much artistic evidence)
Everyone else pretty much copied the Irani tribes heavy cavalry armaments and military tactics
