This song is a hymn that was included in our Presyterian hymnbook, and we sang it in children's choir long before Stevens' beautiful version. This is from a Wikipedia entry: "Morning Has Broken" is a Christian hymn first published in 1931. It has words by English author Eleanor Farjeon and was inspired by the village of Alfriston in East Sussex, then set to a traditional Scottish Gaelic tune, "Bunessan".[1] It is often sung in children's services and in funeral services.

Morning has broken like the first morning Blackbird has spoken like the first bird Praise for the singing Praise for the morning Praise for them springing fresh from the Word Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from heaven Like the first dew fall on the first grass Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden Sprung in completeness where His feet pass Mine is the sunlight Mine is the morning Born of the One Light Eden saw play Praise with elation, praise every morning God's recreation of the new day Morning has broken like the first morning Blackbird has spoken like the first bird Praise for the singing Praise for the morning Praise for them springing fresh from the Word

Piano parts was composed and played by the great Rick Wakeman who also is a legend in his own right..sadly the record company didn't allow him to be credited on the album and was only paid $12 for this..but He says he was cool with it cause He loved his friend Cat Stevens..What a Guy !!

@ilovecatweazle, not as modern as you think. The tune is a Scottish folk song from the 1800s, lyrics were added in 1931. Because he was a singer-songwriter, many people, even today, think Cat Stevens wrote the song.

This song is a Christian hymn originally published in the 1930's. Cat Stevens' version is beautiful and clearly brought the song into the popular mainstream and secular consciousness. He recorded this well before he chose Islam as his faith, but the song's lyrics really cross all boundaries of faith. Just beautiful.
