It is beautiful, I agree with what you have said about it. It's a song about creation and about how every new morning is a recreation of God's creation of that very first day.

Cat Stevens is a legend. Love, love, love his music. Try Peace Train. Moonshadow, Sad Lisa, Wild World. He has SO many great, great songs.

This song is a hymn that is often performed at Easter (at least it always was in my church growing up). Aaron Neville also does a beautiful version of this song. I love Cat Stevens' pure, laid-back voice. Some other songs of his you may want to check out include "Wild World", "Father & Son", "Moonshadow", "Where Do The Children Play", "Oh Very Young" & "Peace Train"

The words were written by Eleanor Farjeon and it was set to a traditional Scottish tune but Rick Wakeman made it very special with his piano improvisation. The hymn was often sung in school assemblies in the 1950s and 60s and that is probably where Cat Stevens first heard it. If you like the piano playing then listen to Rick Wakeman's "Six Wives of Henry VIII" which he was working on at the time. Cat Stevens heard him in the studio and asked him to play something similar as the introduction. I forget which of the portraits of the wives it is where Rick uses another hymn tune, "The Day Thou Gavest Lord is Ended."

It's in our hymnal (Chalice Hymnal, 1995), and we do sing it from time to time. The lyricist, Eleanor Farjeon, wrote another, less known hymn called "People, Look East," set to a traditional French carol tune, also quite enjoyable to sing.

I remember "Morning Has Broken" from a park ranger using it with a series of photos from the park, maybe Grand Tetons National Park.

We used to sing this song,in my Junior school.Over 60 years ago.It’s a classic,for children to sing.Cat Stevens does a great job.He changed his name to Yusuf Islam decades ago.

It is a cold late winter day, 1972, in Eastern NC. I just had my first group sleepover with some new friends at his house, parents being away on a trip. I had to get up real early, go back to my house and get my brother to let me in so I could crawl into bed (had not told my parents I was sleeping over, shame on me). But the point is, as I drove home on that cold March early morning, I heard this song for the first time. The rising sun was peaking thru some clouds, and hearing this tune was spiritual. Will never forget how I felt that morning. I was 17 then, I am almost 70 now, and this tune makes all those memories come flooding back.

My sister gave me her 45s. Cat was one of them. Also carol king. Still love them both.

My favorite by him is, Where Do the Children Play. Awesome song!

So many wonderful songs, especially on his early albums. The first album of his l bought was Buddha and the Chocolate Box, not an album that's mentioned much, but l really love it, Sun/C79 and Oh Very Young are worth buying the album for alone!

To me, one of best songs of the early '70s. He still looks great! xo 💐

How many classics? OMG, he's a huge rabbit hole! He's in my top 5 artists of all time! Please, more Cat Stevens! Wild world, Peace train, Father and son... And I think it is the genius Rick Wakeman on the piano. Sublime!

The same happens when I listen to Rick Wakeman, Billy Joel, Elton John, Bruce Hornsby (not comparing)... They are talentedly unique (does this expression exist? 🤭😁)

This was my class song at my high school graduation 1973. The song was less than 2 years old when we adopted it as our class song. It only won out by 2 votes. The other song in contention was by John Denver TAKE ME HOME COUNTEY ROADS

I was 16 when Cat Stevens put out Teaser and the Firecat. Got the album for Christmas and nearly wore out the needle on my record player with it. To this day, I can’t go out on a moonlit night and not find myself singing, “Yes, I’m being followed by a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow. Leaping and hopping on a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow… Did it take long to find me? I asked the faithful light. Oh, did it take long to find me? And, are you going to stay the night?”

I can never hear that song without immediately thinking of the character Dave Angel, the eco-warrior from The Fast Show!

The piano on this song was played by Rick Wakeman from the band Yes.

Cat Stevens put the chords to the song he found in a hymnbook at a bookstore. 'Morning has broken' was a children's hymn written by Eleanor Farieon, a child's poetry writer. He had heard the hymn while at primary school.🌞🌞🌞

Harri, this is a hymn written by Eleanor Farjeon in 1931. The tune is a Scottish Gaelic tune, set to her lyrics. It is in our hymnal, but we don't sing it nearly as joyfully as Cat Stevens. : )

Sung at our wedding 47 years ago. Beautiful song. We are still going strong. ;)

When I was in swing choir my sophomore year of high school, we sang "Morning Has Broken" to end each of our performances. This song always brings back some pleasant memories for me.

It is spiritual & moving...I always get tears in my eyes listening to this. You don't have to be religious to appreciate the awe at the world's beauty in the these lyrics.

Have always love Cat Steven's music. He is a great singer songwriter with a very unique sounding voice. One of my first albums I ever bought was his "Tea For The Tillerman". The whole album is great. So is the album "Teaser & The Firecat". His first big hits were "Matthew & Son", "I Love My Dog" & "The First Cut Is The Deepest" in 1967. He has had so many great songs in his career such as "Father & Son", "Wild World", "Moonshadow", "Peace Train", "Morning Has Broken" etc. He is still recording & performing live & his voice still sounds great.

This song is a cover of a hymn from 1931, which Cat updated with the help of Rick Wakeman, the piano master and keyboardist for Yes.

Love Cat Stevens! Brings back the 70's to me.

Cat Stevens has always been a seeker, and his music reflects his journey. Beautiful stuff!

His voice is so smooth..

The keyboard player on this is Rick Wakeman. He[s known for his solo work and his keyboards with YES. Please do some of his stuff from The Six Wives of Henry VIII. Ann Boyelyn is my favorite.

I did not know Rick Wakeman played the piano on this one. Now that I know, it all makes sense.

It is spiritual. We used to sing it in church when I was younger.

If you like to check him out further onwards, then go 'On The Road To Find Out'! That song is something special.

It is the other way around.. Cat Stevens took a hymn and made it his own.

Harri, You are correct again. This is a Hymn. I remember hearing it in the Methodist church years ago and thought it was weird of the church putting Cat Stevens song in their hymnal. I was wrong it was a traditional Christian song. I still like the tune. My favorite Cat Stevens song is "The boy with the moon and star on his head" I requested it once but it must have been blocked. I never saw a trace of it. ☹️

@@lgeyser1 Thanks my friend. Some people do not like the idea of having a fling on your wedding day but it is just a song. I have no problem with it.

One of my favorite artists. All of Cat's songs are gorgeous. He recorded most of the soundtrack to the movie Harold and Maude in 1971. I was recently reminded of that having watched the film recently. Cat also wrote the wonderful song "Here Comes My Baby' so nicely covered by The Tremeloes in 1967. Glad he is back performing after such a long hiatus and receiving the recognition he is due.

When he was recording his album "Tea For The Tillerman" my band was recording in the next studio at Criteria Studios in North Miami, Florida in the late '60s. His music is representative of the consciousness or peace, love, harmony and joy of life that was the hallmark of my generation.

Rick Wakeman provided the piano part. He was the keyboardist for the group Yes. He provided the piano interludes in studio to extend the song as it came in under the time recommended for a 45 single at that time. I believe this was an old traditional hymn so Cat/Yusuf didn’t write it but he and Rick Wakeman certainly added to the quality of the recording.

Don't want to go into a long deal here but the original melody dates back to around 1930 as "Bunessan" by Eleanor Farjeon in an edition of "Songs of Praise" as a hymn. Over the years it's been reworked in various forms i.e. in the Catholic faith as "This Day God Gives Me" and "Baptized in Water". Whichever rendition you prefer, it's one of the most beautiful melodies ever written and Cat Stevens' "Morning Has Broken" is a gorgeous and heartfelt pop hymn!

im not religious but I have loved this song since it first came out.. The piano is played by Rick Wakeman from the band ... 'Yes'...

I highly recommend the Cat Stevens song Where do the Children Play.

Rick Waksman is a master keyboard player!

Yusuf Islam is his current name, although he goes by both. I have always felt fed, spiritually, by his music; this is a song I sing to myself and the birds in my garden in the morning. I don't follow a specific religion any longer, but I still feel the spiritual depth of this and other songs. Tea for the Tillerman is my favorite album of his and has helped me make some very important life decisions. Such a beautiful, soothing song, thank you for this one!

Cat Stevens Is a great under rated musician. You should have a listen to "Teaser and The Firecat" and "Catch Bull at Four" Both albums probably his best work. "Another Saturday Night" is sure to wake you up!

@@OddBall1958 Yes, 18th Avenue is one of my favourites, his best albums for me are Mona, Tea, Teaser, Buddha and Catch. After that they are still good, but not quite upto the mark of his earlier work.

It is a holy song. We have it in our Catholic music book.

You got to try a Cat Stevens song Peace Train it's a really moving song but Cat Stevens has lots of great songs that's just one of my favorites. I can't think of the name of it right now but the song Cat Stevens does with this son is also one of his best songs.

Anything he does is pretty. Here's one of the kindest human beings he is a beautiful person. These words are coming straight from the heart I would recommend some interviews that's a good way to find out about this man

Yusaf Islam is his Muslim name. His songwriting is phenomenal, such a talent for writing songs that lift the spirit. And I agree with you Harri, this is a Godly song, it's like a hymn.

Learnt to play this on piano when I was a child taking piano lessons. Also, sung at Church and was used for my wedding song with my sister playing the piano. So many wonderful songs from Cat Stevens in the early 70's. One of my favourites is Oh Very Young, just beautiful! Buddha and the Chocolate Box album is the first album of his l bought, a little bit underrated l feel, l think the album has a little bit more of an 'edge' to it with songs like Sun/C79 another absolute favourite.

We sang this in High School choir. 😁❤️

Cat Steven's is spiritual. He left music when he became a Muslim as they don't permit music and this was at the height of his career.

What a great artist to react to. During the turbulent times of the early 70's Cat Stevens influence was a stabilizing force in popular music. While artists like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Rolling Stones and others were bringing hard rock to the music scene, Cat Stevens was such a calming influence on our music. His music helped shape a generation of Baby Boomers who many times seemed lost and confused.

It was nice to have the choice of listening to the harder rock of bands like the Stones, Led Zep or the gentler tunes of artists like Cat Stevens. There was 'room' for every type of music.

Hi Harri, About your comment @ 6:54, this song was used at the memorial service for my wife's business school teacher who died when a tornado capsized the cruise boat on which she was a passenger.

(take that for what it`s worth, he does pull a leg once in a while) He was asked years later by Cat for the written music so it could be played by Cat live, and Rick said there is nothing written, he simply wings it by memory/talent. And he wasn`t paid or credited for the piece either until much later.

@@jamesw.5855, Wakeman not getting credit/pay was due to contractual issues, nu? An unusual case where although Yusuf and Wakeman were on the same label, the label wouldn't approve Wakeman playing on Yusuf's song.

Have been listening to this song since the 70s... always brings peace to my heart and renews my faith!

Based on an old Christian hymn with words by Elanor Farjeon. Uncredited piano by Rick Wakeman. It was the standard of that era to not give credit to studio players. Once you know it's him you do say 'Of Course, WAKEMAN'!. (Cat did eventually pay him excellent royalties and give him writing credit) Cat's music got me through some really hard times and I still listen to the older stuff to this day. You should do more of his stuff from the 70's. Singer/songwriter extraordinaire!
