Cat S61 Hands On: See Like The Predator
Read more: andauth.co/cats61 | The Cat S61 isn't the best looking phone at MWC 2018, but it could beat the Galaxy S9 to a pulp and still look the same. With a FLIR thermal imaging camera and laser measurement system, this phone can do it all.

The "hump" helps me hold it securely, in landscape mode. It really is a good phone for work and my clients really like thermal images and air quality screenshots attached to their invoices. It pays for itself, if you know what you're doing.
I actually think that is a pretty darn good looking phone. Not everyone finds the ultra-thin, fragile-piece-of-glass aesthetic to be the pinnacle of smartphone design.
Hmmm... What's the maximum distance range of the thermal camera where it can detect heat sigmature?
I'm sorry, but why in the world would you talk about the colour of the buttons for such niche device for almost half of the video?? People who buy this only care about the functionality and you hardly even mention that here :/

ignasb 2:30-2:41, 11 seconds in a 4 minute video. 9 seconds if you dont include talking about how its a multifunction button. Yeah no thats half the video

Oh he's the dude from soundguys! Your videos are great 😂✋
I sold my CAT S60 because the FLIR MSX implementation was faulty, i.e. the thermal image wouldn't line up with the visible light image. Running the calibration would line them up - but only in the calibration screen. The calibration does not get applied when you exit the calibration! At 0:32 the problem is still there - I would have thought a demo phone at a trade show would be properly calibrated. I really hope it's because the camera was calibrated to a distant target, rather than the same problem still being there.

There's a "macro" mode (more like 'Manual MSX' mode tbh) that puts a slider in that can actively change your MSX setting. Basically manual alignment by the user rather than relying on the auto system. It's akin to manual on a camera. Like my cameras, i like to manually focus, so pushing the slider for closer objects doesn't really bother me, in fact makes it far more useful. MSX isn't faulty, it's just the app needs to have some sort of auto-ranging function... like a laser rangefinder??? which this new S61 has! MSX is only rated for a minimum distance of 1m anyway. Any closer and you'll need to manually align the setting no matter the circumstances. Considering this, it's not bad for being only the 1 of 2 integral FLIR smartphones on the market Feels like you sold it over a workable issue :/

I had a FLIR One before the CAT S60, and sold the S60 to get a FLIR One Pro, so I do know how to calibrate the two cameras. The CAT S60's FLIR app is not the same as the the FLIR Ones. You have to set the calibration in an alignment screen, and not with a slider in the main UI. When you enter the alignment screen, you can set the alignment so it appears perfectly on the alignment screen. But the moment you exit the alignment screen, the alignment isn't saved and it's out of alignment again. From memory it happened after an update, and stayed that way. That, and the higher resolution of the Pro was enough to make me switch.

the average tradesman isnt going to be so camera savvy. need to k.i.s.s.
Is the resolution on the s61 much more noticeable than the s60 and is it worth the upgrade even though I own the s60 ?
Did he just say Android Poptart?!

Can I detect gas leaks using thermal camera?
Poptel P60 very cheap with the real rugged features. I am looking for your review on the channel.
Love my 61.
I'm thinking to get one as "upgrade" from razer phone
Shame the CPU couldnt be slightly beefier i have minor concerns with how age and 30gb of videos pictures and apps will affect its already not quite snappy performance but otherwise im buying one the moment they hit stores i need a new phone and id rather not buy an intermediate cheap phone
Adam ....your voice is perfect for this
poptart kya hota hai?
Cool features. When you say the screen works with gloves, you don't mean it's resistive touch, do you? 😕
Vehicle Diagnostics?
can it help me build a 3 storey house?
This review is so bad. This phone is not for the average person. But he's reviewing it like it is. That hump is the flir camera. Which a flir camera alone, can cost a couple hundred.
I have the S60
i can see this phone being put to better use in the hands of someone who isnt a damn android authority geek. but anyone will be somewhat annoyed with the laggy chipset.

I'm a Carpenter I've owned the S60 for 2 years now before that I had multiple now broken Samsung galaxy phones I even learnt how to replace the screens but nothing has broken on my cat S60 I love it and definitely will be buying the s61 the thermal camera has become very handy detecting underfloor heating to helping me find a lost dog I even helped find a lost girl trying to go for swim in the sea the dark
Yessh, for $1000 they could have bitten the bullet and slapped a 835 in there, help out the performance a bit.

Its mkre than enough considering that, when you own one of these, you aren't supposed to use the thermo, the asphalt monitoring and the other construction shit while simultaneously watching a video. Its not meant to be fast, its not meant to be a flashy new S9 with top notch hardware, its supposed to be a phone that doesnt break if you are using it to get shit done

These are made to last and mid-range chipsets are the best for hard work. Most workstation type computers have a midrange chipset to provide power and battery. These things get shit done, not just for Facebook and cat videos.

ThisIsAPrettyLongUserNameWhyTheFuckWouldHeDoThatSoThatEveryoneWouldThumbsUpIt Likewise. I never implied that you did either. But as it seems that I struck a nerve there there may be some truth to it in your case. You wanted a good answer, I gave you a good answer. I wasn't here to insult but it seems that you were. Midrange chips are more suited for constant heavy work while conserving battery and longevity.
Adam left soundguys?
I believe you meant android Pocky.
This is CAT's 5th or fourth generation of devices. You guys should really check out the other offerings. They have more than just tank phones like the s60. The s45 ran a 4k display and a 820 chipset or something like that. It's nice to see Android authority finally give cat some screen time. They make niche phones that aren't for the masses and have been doing it for years now. Even though they are primarily sold in Europe doesn't mean you can't review them guys!
@zulzmei

the phone you are describing (cat s45) does not exist. ther is no cat phone with sd820 or 4k display.
I wouldn't get this one. Serious issue's - mainly with charging. @VDxw Cat are refusing to replace my phone - Cat S61. Less than 6 months - charging issue's. Calls drop out. Poor phone signal. Lost photos. Screen unresponsive. Help centre staffed by agency when I phoned them (at a cost of £15 - premium rate) he said basically he was unable to help! I'm left with a £800 6 month old phone which is unreliable.
Its all about functionality. By they time they actually make it available in Canada it will be outdated.... near obsolete.
EXPANDABLE MEMORY!?
Does this fall apart like the Cat S60 does? With absolutely no tech support like replacing the port covers? Like the Cat S60?
@antred11
6 жыл бұрын
Unless you have the fine motor skills of an orc, the port covers on the S60 will last just fine. In two years of using the S60, I have never even come close to breaking off any part of the phone.
@Beelzebububble

So a phone designed for construction heavy duty use needs delicate touch to use?
@antred11
6 жыл бұрын
Rugged or not, at the end of the day it's still a piece of electronic hardware that should be handled with _some_ care. I mean what do you expect, for them to install steel hinges so you can rip the port covers open like a dumbass?
@Beelzebububble
6 жыл бұрын
Lots of excuses for the company you're shilling for. I see that on all the review sites with CAT S60. And it still boils down to one thing: you shills will constantly reword the same "logic" - rugged does not mean rugged. It needs nice gentle touches. Now prove me wrong by coming back and saying the same thing again with different words.
@antred11
6 жыл бұрын
Beelzebububble Alright, let's hear it then, make a suggestion how port covers should be made. How should they be designed so they won't ever come off, no matter how clumsy you are? Also, if I'm shilling, why am I not getting paid? Am I doing it wrong? 🤣

I think this an ok phone. But I'm soooo tired of them saying, Oh, we will bring an update to this phone soon. Aaaaand... well, you never do. The concept is nice, but the software needs to be running the latest and greatest. Just saying.
SO LAG... CMON..

Or see Like the Terminator :D
*Yeah poptart*
Android Poptart? Doubt it.
Good phone
It looks beautiful. Not some girly 99% screen ratio like all them ladies phones. It looks manly and tough but still sophisticated. And finally, some decent thickness. I really don't want a phone as thin as they are nowadays. They feel like ladies watches. And the top notch is excellent engineering, probably a good feature when you try to guide it inside your pocket. So its finally a practical one again. Tools to go. Smartphones have become too much like jewelry for stupid ppl. You carry around this square plate thats main feature is that itself looks good. Smart people like to have this multitool that does everything. And this one looks good too. Finally I found something good. I already was afraid that I am stuck to my htc 10 for good. Its like the old times when the first pocket pcs came. First HTC phones did not look very slim either, but were packed with sensors and functions. Even a good camera was a great feature back then. Thats what I like about it. That phone enchances a human being, giving one powers not just to talk so that they can be heard all over world, but also perception of thermal vision, distance measurement and air analysis. Popular flagship phones give ppl just more possibilities to waste time looking good. You pick yours. I 'll pick mine.
Thumbs down for calling it Android Poptart which hasn't been confirmed. AA should be more selective with who they hire.
