Don't feel too bad about the hose, Rich. I was a hose routing guy on several vehicles and we don't actually do much in the way of cycle testing calculations. We take our best guess in CAD, we build prototypes (which almost always get revised), then we shake the whole truck (like... really, really, shake it... for a long, long, time) and see what breaks. Prototypes get driven to lunch and on errands all the time exactly to find those sorts of gremlins while they're close to home. You basically did it the same way the "pros" do. We've even fixed our share on the side of the road. 😂

This is the truck every guy wanted to dream of and build, but would be illogical, insanely out of reach and too damn complex, big and daunting. And yet, you've made an incredible series documenting the success, the head scratchers, the failures, and the trials to get to this. Even if no one else ever copies this, I hope they see the thought process and determination from this as a blueprint for success. Success in starting, success in keeping going and success in over coming challenges to reach a running project. You, your family, friends and crew, have a great 2024!

Happy new year to all of the DG family. I’m excited to see the upcoming year’s projects. Big yes for highlighting the obstacles that every project has and how it’s just part of the journey. I have people in my village, all Dodge owners, that any small setback on their vehicle is trip ending and a personal failure which isn’t a happy way of life. Also the brake kleen/ hairspray method has never let me down. Thanks again for bringing us along even though I’m only here for the music.

I was taught on the older rigs that you need to "milk" the power steering to press the air bubbles out while the engine is off. The idea is that fluid flowing has cavitation that prevents bubbles from being bleed out. Lift it again and cycle it back and forth 10 times lock to lock and see if the whine clears up.

Probably my favorite build on KZread ever done. The Caterpillar has to be the coolest swap I’ve seen, and very technically interesting to follow along with. Only thing I disagree with is the bumper choice, but that’s subjective. My dad had a white 97 I remember crawling up into as a young child, and claiming to “drive.” I’m happy to say I have a 97 F350 of my own now that I actually do drive. I think I’ll keep the 7.3 that’s in it though haha.

It is awesome, love how you have turned it into a modern truck with the great old school styling.

As handy and knowledgeable as Rich is, to hand-build a truck and have it break down several times already, is a testament to how hard it is to build a reliable diesel truck. I feel the average every-day person has no clue as to what type of engineering and expertise goes into building these things. We just bitch and call it “junk” if anything breaks, lol.

I feel you on the working out the bugs part. I did a frame swap (2wd-->4wd)/4.8LS/4l80e swap on my squarebody and there isnt much I havent had to do twice. Between 40 year old parts you thought would be ok (they werent), new parts that were bad (bad new caliper which mislead me to believe I had a bad trans as it wouldnt shift out of 1st), wire chaffing from vibration, half a dozen brake line leaks, transfer case slipping out of low (still havent figured that out even after disassembling for a second time.), and installing the front calipers upside down. Im no professional mechanic obviously but the struggle is real.

As always great video. I have the fuel tanks on the OBS trucks it was junk from the factory. Ditch the duel fuel tanks and maybe consider a 40 gallon single tank. With 3.73s you would probably have 600+ miles of range. Amazing build.

Just an FYI CAT has an inline filter up fit kit for the C7 hpop. Found it out when I replaced a bad pump a few months back.

Nice truck Rich - watch the series, you should share towing mileage - I know you didn`t tow all that many KM`s this trip, but would be great to know for those diesels with the emissions systems and the new big gassers. Love the channel, such great projects

I have never thought to wear ear plugs while working under my truck until I just saw you do it, I'll have to keep that in mind next time I'm on a service road smacking rear drums underneath a spool truck.

I'm pretty impressed with all of them custom fab and all of the off the wall stuff you did to make that truck work It pulled the miles and made it home problems are to be expected good job keep up the good work You have an amazing amount of time and effort into that vehicle and I commend you for it Just imagine bringing To a shop and saying I just need a Tune up and have them pop the hood And watching the reaction would be priceless good job buddy

I can't think of a more fitting truck for the Cat filter conversion on the FASS pump. Filter numbers 1R-0749, and 256-8753 cross with the original FASS filters, and the yellow Cat branded filters would look phenomenal hanging out from under the #FTreeKitty.

That first long haul is nerve racking. I built a Cummins swapped 79 square body in 8 months. Wife and I one of our friends and our two dogs Left a moth later from Pennsylvania to Colorado. Towing a 34ft camper . Blew 5th gear out of the nv4500. Had gears overnighted from home to best western transmission in Colorado Springs. Back on the road in four days . Went elk hunting and returned home .

Sounds like those fuel lines needs some sort of strain relief which is mounted to the high pressure fuel filter assembly, so hopefully that eases the vibration forces on those o rings.

I got a 2006 peterbilt dump truck C15 twin turbo. But the 7.3 L navistar diésel engine got a very very distinctive sound. In my personal opinion sound much better.
