I love this video, thanks for sharing! For online purchases, another way to "control" yourself is to actually get up and go to your wallet before you click "purchase now," and take the physical cash out of your clip. It forces you to look at the actual money you are taking out of your clip and think for a second about whether you really want to do it or not. Online shopping is SUCH a slippery slope because it's so quick and easy, and you don't ever have to interact with actual money. I shop online all the time, and it's where I have made some of my worst impulse buys! :P

On the other hand, it's also where you can often find the best deals. So as long as I am sure it's what I really want/need, and it's at the best price I can find, then I go for it. It's also good not to shop online when you're tired or angry or sad, ha ha!

Naomi Witzke yes me to just two weeks ago with the craft day on HSN I spent a whole lot of money I mean a whole lot glad they have the flex payment but total is still a lot I am trying to save I'm out of debt but I want to pay cash for a home

great video. I used the Dave Ramsey envelope system in the past. I couldn't afford the envelope system. At the time I used small mailing envelopes and put them in a grocery store coupon organizer. We were able to debt snowball all of our debt and have emergency fund in the bank. We also had almost 6 months salary in savings . Our daughter had a life threatening reaction to a medication and so now we have had to start over again. Im thankful for this system though. Its so smart to use cash and your aware of how much you have left because it is tangible not a plastic card.

That's great. I used to have all my money in cash. That's when I didn't have a huge income or any bills, and before there were banks online. But after paying all bills online it's become less and less cash. Nowadays we can't even use cash on the bus. Ususally I don't spend money on anything except bills and food. But these stickers.. omg. I've started writing up everything and calculating what's left. Seeing the numbers and having an overview of upcoming bills is helping alot. Seeing the actual money is better, but when most of the wasteful purchasing is online.. The grid notebook has helped me alot.

Love this. Many videos show families or couples budgeting. Since I'm the only one paying bills, I find myself having to go on a much stricter budget. The idea of 40.00 a week (as I've seen for others) for dining out is not a reality for me. And I also liked how you addressed the reasons why you overspend in areas. I have the same grocery issues. I've been putting my fruit and veg in open bins near the top shelf to try and remember to use them up. Thank you for the post. I'all definitely be checking back for more ideas.

I just found this video! I find that using Dave Ramsey's app and seeing the money count down on my phone works better for me than taking out cash. I want to see leftover money in my areas for my goals!

Anne King I thought I was the only person who didn't use the cash envelope system?! I stopped doing it bc it was causing me more stress and time and the app helped me manage overspending. Also I have a credit union and getting to a bank on payday is a lot further for me. I know they say u can't "feel" as much when u swipe a card but the cash system doesn't work as well for me. Also when I started using the app I found not only did I stop overspending but I had at least a little bit of money left over in those cash categories that i transferred right into my first snowball category at the close of the month.

Anne King well thanks for posting that so I have someone to relate to! In my FPU class a classmate said to me that I'm making excuses and that I can't "feel" the pain of purchases? Overspending wasn't my problem. It was TRACKING that was the problem and since I can do the app anywhere & anytime & instantaneously it's been the missing piece to sticking to the budget. When I buy food I do a certain amount for that. Then I have another amount for non food. It’s for stuff like laundry soap and trash bags and stuff. Usually that amount is $200 a month. If there is any leftover I put it back into food. Just to make sure there is enough.

Thanks for sharing! I just bought Rachel Cruze's new wallet and I can't wait to use her clip system. What I've been doing that works for me is a checking account envelope system. I have 10 checking accounts (sounds crazy, I know) but I love knowing exactly how much money I have in each category with a card linked to every account. I can easily transfer money around from category to category. I also love online grocery shopping (they do it at Wal-Mart and Smith's here in Utah) because I can easily keep track of what I'm spending without going over budget.

I would love the RC wallet, but it's just a little too long for my liking. I have another wallet that I sold that was a super nice and very similar to the RC wallet. It just didn't fit my life. I hope you enjoy the RC wallet!

I agree, too long too wide, fun colors would be good too. I'm still on the hunt for the perfect wallet. I keep using my old wallet with envelopes that I made with pretty paper from Joanne's.

So glad I just found this video!! I was looking at the envelope wallets on Etsy but they are way to big and bulky, but I also don't enjoy taking out white envelopes every purchase so this is very streamline!!

I do something similar but with Gift Cards/pre paid reloadable. So for groceries I load a Gift card to the store so that's my amount. I also try not to shop for groceries at stores like Walmart because I'm more likely to try and spend my money elsewhere.

I love RAKs, never got one, great video, I'm trying to do a budget, but haven't really started, I'm writing down what i made and what bills i have already paid, and what else i spend money on, i get paid every week, but by the time i go to work on Monday i'm broke, really living paycheck to paycheck, i really don't know where to start, getting ready to watch Rachel Cruze, tfs

I'm switching to the envelope system but will be using binder clips as well. How do you keep track of loose change and what category it belongs to? Also, I saw you post in an EC group on Facebook and was like, "Hey! That planner setup looks familiar!" Haha.

With the loose change I take it out of my wallet and put it in a container at home. I just keep dollars in the clip system. It gets a bit too cumbersome to track all of that coin. Thanks for watching!

That works better for my American friends...being in Canada, you end up with a lot of coins since we don't have a dollar bill. I do still love the system though!

Get an avetagr of your last 3-6 months of online shopping.Start an envelope for it. When you buy something online move the money from your envelope into the account you purchases it with.
