I find budgeting therapeutic. It gives a peace of mind and if you track your spending meticulously, it can give you a great insight into your spending habits. Plus knowing your monthly spending averages can help you set goals for yourself to spend more wisely in the future.

there is a learning curve for newbies that have never done a budget before like us, but I like seeing exactly where our money goes... it even helped decide which things had to go, like cutting off the cable, & lowering our cell phones bills. You can tweak it just right for your saving needs!

Great video! I keep a finance binder which is a basic three-hole binder where I keep track of all my accounts and do monthly budgets before I get paid. I like the categories that you listed oh, mine is a little different but it works really well to have a system in place because then you have money to spend. I a lot a certain amount of money every Friday for spending and that way I always have spending to look forward to instead of spending in one spot that I can keep taking from. It's kind of like a reward system so then I have to think of what I'm going to spend it on LOL if I can't think of something to buy it that Friday, I just roll it over to the next one and I have double. It's a fun little system I came up with :-)

If you have 30 dollars left in the food budget, would you be able to allocate it to whatever you want i.e. more savings etc?

Also how do you get budget for sinking funds, for example saving for property taxes or new technology? Also car insurance is listed under two categories, auto and insurance. Where should one put it? I also purchased the Personal Finance Software 10 years ago which I still use. I did download the Every Dollar App which is cool, but comparing it to the software, I have found that it lacks so many of the worksheets, such as major components of a financial plan, irregular income, the breakdown of savings, and debt snowball. Has Mr. Ramsey considered adding those features in the app. In the meantime, I will continue to use the software

What is best in this situation is to get one month ahead at some point. For example, for one really good month, you set aside half of it. Then the next month you budget only on what is left from that last month and don't use anything that comes in during the month, only spending what is left from last month. Then from that point forward you always budget based on your earnings from the prior month. So lets say you get a great month in April making 4,000.00--you managed to only spend 2000 during April. You write a budget for May based on 2000. By the end of May you have earned 3000. So you budget for June using the 3000 and continue that going forward.

How do you deal with three pay months, because when you are first starting out you are probably living paycheck to paycheck, therefore, that last paycheck in a three pay month (eg. December was for me) my last paycheck will need to go to the first week of January. But if I budget for just December with December money my budget is not correct. And I will not be able to pay for the expenses at the beginning of January, before I get paid in January and I cannot be bothered to call and change my due dates every time to make sure that I have the money in my account to cover those bills.

I had tried to look for my credit union last year but the Every Dollar did not have my credit union, only the regional and local banks and other credit unions in Maryland.
