    I use mini dividers in my wallet to separate my cash! =) I dump my coins into the main coin compartment and then dump them into a big jar at the end of every two weeks or so and when the jar fills up....we turn the coins into cash at the bank and use it for a fun family activity!

    Great video as always Rachel!!!! Appreciate you sharing your tips & advise, as well as the inspiration, motivation, and support you give us all!!! :) My hubby and I recently paid off our last debt, $17,000 in 20 months on a low income (we're a one income family). Gazelle intensity, self disipline, communication, support, and saying NO alot was very worth it... We can now say "We're Debt Free!!!! (except mortgage). Feels amazing. Onto baby step #3 we go :) Without the zero based budget and advise like yours, we couldntn't have done it. Before we started watching your amazing dads channel and yours, we knew nothing about budgetting or even where to begin!!! Fast forward two years later and we are now debt free!!!! :) Big thank you to you and your father!! Sorry got carried away there!!! :/ I just wanted to share our victory story :) Anyways, i liked and shared this video on facebook.

    this actually sounds so effective. taking money from a fixed sum of money which is in a pile you can actually touch vs. just paying with a card that seems like an enormous sum after you got paid is an image that clicked right away! the only downside i see is if you lose your wallet you lose all your money for the month. and i tend to lose my wallets more often than i would care to admit..

    hi, Rachel. i like clip idea! i have same concept except i have a dividers for few category but i have VERY hard time not to borrow money from other category so i stopped getting cash and i use debit card. some people say its easier to swipe and not knowing how much you are spending but i find it i don't go shopping w/o cash unless its planed like grocery shop.when i have $5, or $20, its east for me to take my kids out to ice-cream ,etc even though its not in the budget. do you have any tip for me? i do most of my bills online too, thats another thing. do i only get cash maybe for grocery shop?i wonder if i make different checking acct for different things so i separate our emergency money ( that need to stay in the bank too so we don't touch it!) from other expense. TIA

    i have to ask because i am confused... ANY ONE can answer if you know ... BUT isn't the clip system (or alternative to envelopes) dangerous, as in you'd be carrying around hundreds of dollars in cash at any given time? I might be misunderstanding this one. THANKS!!

  • @laurentatum624

    @laurentatum624

    +Jessica Grizoffi The cash envelope system is mostly for the categories in which you'd like to better control your spending - groceries, clothes, blow money, restaurants, etc. You can minimize risk by filling your envelopes every time you get paid (ex.if you get paid biweekly, fill your envelope only with the money you need for the next two weeks). My husband and I each have an official dave ramsey envelope wallet, so he is responsible for certain categories, and I'm responsible for others. I only take my wallet out of the house if I know I'm going to spend from one of my categories, and even then, I usually leave my wallet hidden in the car (or sometimes I just leave the wallet at home) and only take the amount of cash I know I'm going to spend (ex. we budget $200 for groceries every two weeks, but we only take $80 into our main grocery store at a time. Or, we budget $60 for restaurants for the month, but we only take $20 with us). Cash is actually a bit safer than credit cards - if it's stolen, it's the only thing gone! With cards, you have to manually call each company, alert them of possible fraud, get the cards canceled, and order new ones. Meanwhile, if you have bills that are supposed to auto-pay with those credit cards, the charges won't go through, you'll be past due on the bills and you have the extra hassle of calling all of THOSE companies and giving a new form of payment. When you're carrying cash, you're aware of it and tend to be more careful in where you place it (I actually don't like the feeling of carrying my cash in my purse, it actually makes me nervous!). Just don't advertise that you carry lots of cash, and no one will even notice :)

  • @TomMcgee

    @TomMcgee

    +Jessica Grizoffi I actually keep a set of 'master' envelopes at home that has our budgeted cash for the month and then my wife and I have envelopes that we can carry with us. We move money from the master envelopes to our personal ones as needed but only put a week or less of cash in them. There are actually very few times that we have large amounts of cash on us. If we do a large shopping trip for groceries then we may have a few hundred. If someone happens to rob you when you have that cash in your pocket just throw the cash in the opposite direction from where you want to go. I guarantee you that the criminal will run to the cash and you run the other way. It actually pays to carry around a large bundle of singles in your pocket. You throw that real hard and dollar bills will be flying through the sky and you may actually get to walk away with your wallet or pocket book while they are chasing after a bunch of dollar bills!

    The envelope system didn't really work for me. The only cash I carry is for fast food. Every month I withdraw my budgeted amount for fast food and when that cash is gone, I know that that's it. I do have a debit card that I use for my purchases and every time I spend money, I get a notification that tells me how much money I just spent and how much money I have left in my account. It keeps me from overspending because I know that it's real money and I am constantly aware of how much money I have in my account.
