Doug, thanks for this. Don't know how many times I've watched this video. As a youngster, I used to collect cotton reels. My dad asked why, and I didn't know. Now decades later, I have an answer, just not the spools, lol.

I mean, it just gets whackier by the week - whacky but fantastic! I can't imagine how many of those little reels my grandmother chucked out over the years, probably would have been enough to make a damn good number of carvings, if I'd had the notion to think of it way back then. As kids, we made elastic band propelled 'tanks' from them - little did we know what we were missing...!

I like the spool holder. Since those spools are pretty hard wood, it is easier to slip when pushing harder on the knife, and we all know...that's when we head for the Band-Aids. The holder keeps our holding hand out of the way. Love your content. Long time watcher. Thanks for sharing, Doug!

we used to make spool tractors from these . carve notches round the two rims put an elastic band through the middle with a short match stick on one side that sat in another carved notch and a long match stick (twice the length of spool end) on the other side that was left smooth. twist up the band with the long stick put on floor and watch them go.

I like to use spools with the original paper labels. Adds to the authenticity. Soaking them will loosen the labels, maybe even ruin them. I’ve never had to soften the wood. Some spools may just be too hard to carve. Toss and get another one. 😊
