On June 11, 2023, Ankara, the capital of Turkey, experienced severe flooding due to heavy rains. The floodwaters transformed the city streets into rivers and caused significant damage, including washing away vehicles. These floods occurred in the wake of heavy rainfall along Turkey's Black Sea coast, which resulted in flooding that claimed at least three lives a week earlier.
The Turkish weather service has warned of further heavy rains for the following day, threatening the Black Sea region, the Aegean coastline, and the western Mediterranean Sea. Flash floods and high winds could potentially strike these regions. The popular holiday destination of Antalya is also reportedly at risk.
