Carp Fishing Rigs... a load of old b******s! Carp pro, Ian Chillcott has his say | Carp Fishing 2020
"If there are a thousand things which are important to me in carp fishing, then rigs come around number 937 on that list; there is simply too much crap talked about them," boldly states carp fishing legend, Ian 'Chilly' Chillcott. "I have only ever found one style of fishing Hair Rigs, and that came from Lenny Middleton in 1980. Everything ‘invented’ since, is just an adaptation of the original. It was the rig that I would use, and I am sure, very effectively too."
In this video, Chilly goes into depth about the fundamentals of a carp rig and why you shouldn't be led by fashions, as he wonderfully sums up... "There is no denying that the mechanics of the Hair Rig should never have to be as complicated as some would have you believe."

    True story I'd pre tied and put my 21mm pellets on my rods. Was end of November and was going to a lake that was rimmed. My mate said we can go to Holliefieid on the Crooked mile instead. Fished the top lake with said baits attached but I glugged them in my home made stuff. My mate said I'm going to go small with little hooks as he had been reading g mags to go small and light in winter. I had a 21lb 7oz common out on my rig and mate had nothing out all day. I had 2 out on the 21mm pellets . Goes to show, if everyone is doing the same thing I'll do the opposite. Happy fishing mate. One thing my mate and I worked on was an adjustable zig in the 80s. 👍

    I've started using the ronnie/spinner rig not because it's a trend, because it cuts down the cost of buying never ending hooklink material which ain't cheap, all i need change is the hook. For me its all about saving the pennies and still catching fish. 90% of carp fishing is watercraft and rest is bait application and rigs and i believe a well placed ronnie will catch more than a well placed basic rig.

  • @MidlandAngler
    @MidlandAngler3 жыл бұрын

    I think it’s all down to individual confidence. You find a bait and rig that you get results with and you take it every where. I’ve done it myself and then gone on to try other baits and rigs but in my head I’ve never been able to relax so revert back to the tried and tested methods . This summer I fished a very weedy shallow park lake that had the green candy floss weed in abundance as well as drifting weed beds and some flow due to it being stream fed . I decided to fish long running chods ( thank you Jim Shelley ) I’d fished chods before but never caught on them or had faith as I preferred the hinge . Long story short I caught a lot of fish and shocked myself ... the weed was so bad I never saw another angler ... and it’s a free to fish lake 🥳🥳🥳 Horses for courses I believe 👍🏻😊🌞

    Dacron has been used by lots of anglers without them even realising. Most sinking braided reel lines are literally Dacron, regardless of what marketing spiel is put on it by the manufacturers. Same with the braided leader material such as ArmaKord or Nash ArmourBrajd - both are Dacron in the majority with a couple of threads of different materials for some reason or another.

    Couldn’t agree more bud, used basically the same 3 rigs for 35 years myself and they still catch carp . Keep it simple with as less knots as feasibly possible I always say 👍🏻 decent informative video this, nice work

    Chilly is cooler than even his name suggests :-) and I agree with what he says... But there's a nagging part of me that screams: Imagine if every carp angler in the world just used a line-aligned hair rig? Besides the fact that this would bankrupt a fair number of tackle companies, it would be dead boring!

    'i dont use the chilly stiffie doo dah wham banger rig' absolutely dead at that comment XD it makes me so sad that there's a whole generation of anglers, the likes of Chilly who are going to be gone from carp angling one day, and we're gonna be left with the likes of the Nash guys, who don't get me wrong I love, Alan Blairs enthusiasm and passion for carp angling is beyond question and so are the rest of them, but I've never once seen any of them catch a carp on a hair rig because they're too busy baffling themselves with the brilliance of their rigs, whilst also claiming that their rigs don't matter and you just need to get a rig in front of some feeding fish.

    What a refreshing video! Well done Chilly for saying it like it is. After 20yrs away from the sport, I feel like a dinosaur at 42yrs old - as Simon Crow also says; keep it simple. I’d love to know if he sharpens his hooks, but that’s for another day...

    Im sure I’ve seen a video where Chilly said he has never sharpened a hook in his life, I could be wrong though

    Regarding PVA bags Ian: The fox loaders make it a breeze. I wouldn't be without one. I actually used to use a taped up toilet roll tube before Fox brought out the loader. If you haven't already(!?), you should give one a try... they eliminate most of that faffin' around you mention which is putting you off using them. Good video, thanks for sharing your wisdom!

    In winter on my lakes the fish go to 100+ foot depths. Agree that you have to be where the fish are and feeding. My main carp fishing was from 82-85 and I would fish for less than 30 minutes, catch a good carp and then go home. The obsession with tackle seems bizarre to me.

    By your own admission, you’re not into tackle, seemingly you’re not really into fishing, either, if you only bother to fish for “less than 30 minutes” 🧐😂

    I've caught carp straight line to banded hook with pellet. Rigs really do p*ss me off, I can't be doing with tying and connecting this n that... change my mind.
