I tried this two days ago and it was fantastic! I did boil it for three hours at a soft rolling boil but for some reason mines was heck-a-thick but gorgeously brown. I had to put it in the microwave a few times because it also had some chunks in it. Once I microwaved and stired it a couple of times, it was perfect. I did use the original dulche de leches canned milk though and I poured it on top of a warm pan of fudge brownies. Don't do it people, those things will get you into trouble 😵!

I find that if you keep at a slow boil and flip your can every hour it has a more even cooking. The bottom is next to the element so it will literally burn if you keep it boiling. It gets thicker and darker every hour so if you want it a true caramel color you have to pull it out at 3 hours if you want it dark 4 hours. Each hour it's gonna get thicker and thicker if you slow boil it. If you do it the way she did it, it will probably take 6 or 7 hours to to that caramel color

From a Cappuccinos & Latte Lover: 4 hours on med/high heat on the stove top did it for me. I had boiling water in a kettle which I added every half hour - and I put my can on the side and just rolled it every half hour when I added the water. I let it sit for maybe an hour before I cut the can open. Oh wow- It was thick and brown just like my Torani caramel sauce. So I poured in in a container + half cup of caramel coffee syrup. I gave it a good whisk with a fork to even it out the texture - got the same consistency as my Torani caramel sauce. Then I poured it in an empty Torani caramel sauce bottle... Long story short - I will never (ever) buy Torani (overpriced) caramel sauce ever again cuz my local Aldi sells condensed milk for $1..... [And the stove top method works for me cuz cooking gas is included in my building in NYC - WIN/WIN!!!!]

In a pot making sure the water NEVER goes below the cans, bring water to a boil, reduce heat to low, ad cans and weigh them down, put a lid on and simmer for 6 hours. (This can also be done in a crockpot) Allow to cool overnight or at least 4 hours on the counter (don’t put into anything to try to speed the cooling process). It should be a rich Carmel color and much thicker than shown in this video. @@bitastee1

When I make it I leave the cans on their sides moving them around every now and then. I am constantly adding more boiling water to my pot that has the condesed milk cans in boiling water. The water is at a rolling boil for at least 3 hours. I could probably boil it a bit longer. When I open my cans I have to poke holes in one end and use a can opener on the other end and run a knife around the sides of the can so that the caramel will come out in a solid form. The caramel is much much darker and can actually be cut into slices. It reminds me of opening a can of jelled caranberry sauce and cutting it into slices to serve. This womans canned condensed milk was not boiled it was simmered and is way way to runny and light in color. In fact it looks like heated condensed milk which would be delicious but whats the point of not boiling it long enough when you are shooting for a really thick and dark caramel???? I think I might try a can in a crock pot on high for 8 hours to see how that works. I will leave the can on its side and roll it over a few times while it cooks. This stuff is addictive delicious! One other thing, I dont know why but when I boiled my cans it left a thick sticky rim around the inside of my pot. I scrubbed this sticky stuff for 30 minutes and couldnt get it off the pot. I did a google search and read to remove anything sticky from a pot to rub cooking oil or peanut butter over it and let it set for 10 minutes. I used cooking oil, waited 10 minutes and then removed it with a paper towel. It came RIGHT OFF. I then washed the pot really well with my regular dish soap and easy peasy I had a clean pot!

I made this today in the crockpot on high for 4 hours. It's good, but not what you're describing. I personally love taking cranberry out of a cold can and then slicing the cranberry!! I hope to get that consistency next time with the caramel. I'm going to try it on high for 8 hours, or on stovetop. I'm going to put what I have now in a non stick pan (with a little coconut oil) and try to harden it into candy a bit that way..

Oh, and I assumed the ring in the pot was just from the superglue residue from the wrapper.

You need to do it on low for 8 hours. If you do high it will over cook.

Put them on there side.. it cooks better. you can tell on the side is better because the bottom of you can is dark and not the top.please don't put cans in the frig cause it's been heated and the metal will get in the milk.

You guys I'm sorry but she missed the mark on this one. The sweetened condensed milk should stay in the boiling water about 3 to 4 hours. Not a few minutes. When you open the can it will be a dark "caramel" color. Not a cream color.. LOL

I agree.... and all of the moaning and smacking.... too much. I've watched other videos and theirs actually turned to a caramel. She didn't do this right. She should have left it in the can to cool for 6 hours which would actually cook from the trapped heat within the can.... but she opened it 15 minutes after three 3 hour boil process. I'll wait...
