    Even though this is now a couple of years old, this still stands as the best tutorial on C1 that is out there, including the C1 site! Thank you for such a thoughtfully done, “beginner” series.

    Quick question for anyone who might know - When tethering to your desktop folder lets say, and backing up to an external hard drive as you shoot. Which files are your working files post photoshoot? The desktop files? I typically dont have anything saving to my computer drive, usually I always tether to my external drive so I'd like to better understand how that suggested workflow best functions. Thanks everyone :)

    Nope! No card is needed (in fact some cameras require that you don't have a card inserted).

    This is really helpful ... but I'm still so confused about the structure of the sessions vs the catalog.

  • @RMSPtv

    @RMSPtv

    Sessions are standalone folders that contain all the captures, the processed files and the settings/edits file (cosession file) in one folder as you name it - that folder can be moved around to other hard drives and is very flexible workflow. The Catalog is one singular database that can house dated import folders, as well as individual sessions. It is designed (like Lightroom) to be looking for your images externally in a specific place -- therefore, you don't want to move images around when working with a Catalog. Usually photographers who shoot a wide variety of things to card utilize Catalog - and those who shoot a specific topic on a specific day (client work) will shoot to a Session and have the option to move that Session to a Catalog later if they wish. Sessions contain the nested folders; Catalog does not. The Catalog file has the settings/edits and syncs that to the images using the software, just like in LR. The Session contains the settings/edits for that particular session only. Hope that helps!

    What new users to Capture One need, is instructions of what to do before they start editing. Eg. If they have uploaded the lmages to a folder on their hard drive. How should start C1? Ie they should either make a new Session or Catalog, and then import the images. Also, they need to know how to set C1 so it doesn't duplicate the Raw files, but only uses them as a Reference to where they were placed in what folder of their hard drive. Then they can start with what they want to do for edits. I think this would go a long way to help new users so they don't wind up with a mess in their C1 filrs.

    Is it possible to close a session and start another one without shutting Capture One down working on pc, I have not been able to find answer to this.

    From the Library tab (file folder icon) you can click the + sign next to your Session and create a New Session. In your preferences, you can set up whether a session opens up in a new window, or closes the other session and opens up. If you are set up with the former, you'll need to close the previous session. So, to answer: yes, but do it in the other order, create the new session first.

    If you need a raw converter and know you will proceed to Photoshop somewhere during the process (or a similar pixel based product) why not begin in Adobe Camera Raw that offers all the primary raw converting tools and is directly integrated with Photoshop and Bridge. From there you have a much more sophisticated layer concept as well as smart objects and a ton of other features, not least for colors. You can go back and forth between ACR and Photoshop endlessly in a non destructive way. All the storing and grouping stuff can be done from inside Bridge. ACR and Bridge come with Photoshop. Example, I expected film grain could be managed selectively in a layer now in Capture One 20, but no, due to the internal architecture such a thing is not possible - sounds like "static" to me. Speaking as a former Capture One user - Isolated from the hyping and cheering Capture One under the hood is old wine on new bottles. But of course, be free to drink cheaper wine ad libitum.

    The reasons for a converter other than Photoshop are many. 1. Some folks don't want to use/learn Photoshop, thus having a program that can handle many of those functions, including a certain amount of local adjustments with masks is one. There are many people who use Lightroom without ever getting into Photoshop, for this same reason. 2. Tethering workflows. Jeff tethers for 99% of his shoots. Something you can't do in Photoshop or Bridge. If you only shoot to card, and you have time on your hands, Bridge and PS ACR are fine. 3. Overlay function. A client asks to see the image with their logo/front cover/graphics - this is a clunkier process in Photoshop compared to Capture One Pro. 4. The ability to very quickly get an image out of the program and immediately into Adobe InDesign, much slower in a ACR/PS>INDD workflow if you are making lots of changes on-set. 5. This is a video about Capture One Pro, and the Photoshop component is secondary. If one were not needing the organization, global/local editing, tethering capability, easy camera calibration, applying styles across huge batches of images, flexibility in organizing images across hard-drives, immediate backup upon ingest, advanced metadata like barcode scanning and automation through scripting code that C1Pro offers, or the ability to batch process images for a variety of needs in one hit of "Process" - then Bridge and Photoshop is all you need. That all being said, if you were needing a Smart Object specifically for your project, then taking the Raw file to ACR would be the ideal step. But, that doesn't on its own negate the need for a program like Capture One for all it offers - it all depends on if you use what it offers in your own workflow. Sounds like you don't, so Bridge and PS-ACR are all you need! Thank you for bringing that up!

    @@RMSPtv Thanks for this guided tour into Capture One. Tethering, which for some reason was missing in Capture One for my professional Sony camera ten years back, and never warned about as an exception before I purchased the application, was easily managed with a free third party app. Another problem with the ARW files for my camera had no easy workaround. Limitations with the masking and the stability of the file management were other issues. So I could either drop Capture One or get another camera. I kept my gear and dug into Photoshop for real and learned that most of what you highlight here as special for Capture One was easily managed in ACR/Photoshop/Bridge, except for a few outlandish details that never became important. You know about Actions. I have stayed with Photoshop since and will never need a replacement. But I am open for new ways and a month ago I was caught by the current campaign and got the impression that the initial problems with Capture One probably were solved, and I decided to give it a second chance. If it really matched ACR, it might be worth a test. Capture One looks good, admitted, and many of the features are cleverly designed if your scope is limited to the basic raw editing, luminosity and colors. To my surprise a couple of new bugs in Capture One completely blocked the call from Capture One to Photoshop for my PC-Win version 20.0.03, and I found out that the bug had been known for at least 3 months, 4 months by now. The bug was not fixed with 20.0.04. Again I was stuck and asked for a refund, but sorry, "company policy" doesn't allow such a common service. So, history was negatively repeated regarding my experiences with Capture One. Hope others are satisfied with the product. On the top of this, a Capture One ambassador recently suggested that maybe this was the time to replace my PC with a Mac. Low level arrogance and another indication of bad management when you need fast solutions. In my opinion the new ownership is focusing more on marketing than development and support, i.e. profit over professionalism. I hope for you that I'm wrong. Such a policy will eventually hit Mac users too.

    I love C-one I used LR for 11 years as a professional photographer. Then 2 years ago I tried PS on trial version, the ACR drove me nuts. In LR & C-one my RAW images are safely protected in a separate folder of my choice, I only edit RAW copies. The ACR in PS doesn't allow that, you have to edit the Raws out right! The trial version ended and off the computer it went.
