I have watched 7 or 8 explanations of this sessions/catalog puzzle and yours is the first one that made any sense at all. I think I have an idea of how to proceed. Everyone assumes LR catalog experience, but a lot of us started using Photoshop long before LR came along and have existing file structures we created and your unhurried demonstrations of the Finder files really helped.

First vid I’ve watched that CLEARLY explained the diffs and purpose of catalogues and sessions. And went through practical workflow examples. Thank you so much. Was in the brink of deleting my free trial and returning (defeated) to L/r.

Excellent ... this really helped me understand the difference(s) and handshake between the two. AND ... since I'm trying to learn Cap1 (21) and Affinity Photo at the same time, the learning curve is a challenge ... EXPECIALLY, since I'm almost 74-years-crazy. I recently subscribed to your channel. Cheers from Chuck (N.E. Florida) : +) and, BTW--I'm going to begin with Sessions vs. Catalogs, since it seems more direct for what I need right now from Cap1.

The organization of files in capture one 20, deserves an average course at any university. I think that this concept of organization has already made many users return to Lightroom even considering that capture one has more features than lightroom. I hoped that the 2021 version would bring about a radical change in the concept. But the confusion continues. This is not the way.

Thanks for the content. I've never used LR so I won't have to un-learn the LR processes. But I've been lost on the organizational structure of my sessions so I think your help will help preserve my sanity.

Excellent video. I currently have Sessions broken down by ie 2019 Sessions, 2020 Sessions. Withing those, I have subfolders based by quarter ie 2020 1st Quarter, 2020 2nd Quarter and actual sessions beneath each quarter. Your video has given me the confidence to import sessions into a yearly catalog for easier browsing without re-allocating the session folders. I'll give it a try with a test run on the 2019 sessions.

I've used Capture 1 for years without understanding the difference between Catalogs and Sessions. I still don't understand -- there's just something about this that isn't intuitive to me -- but you're explanations bring me closer to finally getting it, and I'd like to thank you for that.

Thanks a lot for much useful information! See I must contact Capture One to help me import my date folders from sessions to catalogs unbroken. I love the date folders my a7III creates for me, and will never break them.

Thank you so much for the video! I just started working with Capture One. And I have a question about correspondence between sessions and the catalog. After I've imported the session to the catalog it doesn't update des changes when I work on a variant in the session itself. The changes are only visible in the sessions folder but not in the catalog. And it's also the other way around. If I would work on a picture in the catalog the changes do not appear in the sessions folder itself. I would be super happy if you could explain your workflow and how to deal with this. Many thanks!

Hi Zak, Thank you... I'm beginnning to understand (I come from Lightroom). One question, do you need to mke a catalog in which to put the session, or is the session a sort of 'stand alone' without a catalog.

Thanks for the video. I'm moving from Lightroom to Capture One, and it is a bit confusing to understand how it stores files and data, and this video helps. One point - you keep saying "store the files in the operating system". Well, the operating system is not a storage location - it is simply a collection of programs for operating the computer. You are actually storing the files in a drive that also contains the OS, not the OS itself. I'm sure most people understand what you mean, so this is a minor detail.

Excellent video, thx! I'm new to Capture One and I'm currently using Sessions. Can I create a referenced Catalog and add my 5 star photos to that catalog? Would I import the 5 star photos from my Sessions into this new Catalog? Thanks!

I guess I should've watched until the end when you imported a session into a catalog, haha! Assuming you can drag photos from a session in the Catalog groups, albums, etc.

My friend, good day to you and thanks much for the explanation. My question is could CO Pro. not add one other option that is, to allow photographers to import images into the editor and on completion export the image into his or her own folder (s) as the photographer desires.

I am almost 81 years old and over 60 years in Photography. I do not have the time to study those storage structures. I would rather like to spend my time doing and adding to my very extensive collection of my photographs.

Very informative! But one doubt: how i can see all photos of the session like a lightbox in Bridge? I only can see about 15 photos in the screen and a text with "10 photos more" The thumbnails size aren't adjustable? Thanks in advance!

When selected the thumbnails previews are not adjustable, but when viewed as simply thumbnails In The Browser they can be resized. Similarly, the larger viewer window can be removed so that only thumbnails are visible- via the view drop down

capture 1 p ro that I have often loses photos in a catalog. Open it once its there and open it again its not there... This has happened multiple times to me and Have had to reload the pictures. Everything was saved by the way so the catalog should have been good . when reopened. Sometimes it happens only after I add more than 1000 pictures to a folder. IT does not seem to like more than 1000 pictures in a folder..

I think it's some kind of hardware you have downloaded. I had the same problem, but found I had some kind of hardware that deleted images that was not used for a time. Personally I store all my images on date folders on my sd-cards, which I import as date folders into originals of the catalog, and then store the catalog on 3 external harddisks. Didn't find a way to use sessions and then import the date folders from there into a catalog later. So my catalogs only contains the images of 2 full sd-cards. Made me remember I must buy new sd-cards with larger storage capacity. Should love it if Capture One could make it possible to import date folders into catalogs, then I could just make sessions with two sd-cards and later import them into a larger catalog on an external harddrive, keeping my beloved date folders intact. Think I'll contact Capture One to see if they can help me with this.

@@bioliv1 thanks for your reply. I store all my photos on external disks that are backed up two times. What happens to me is that although the photos are still on the external drives, Capture 1 catalog loses them. For instance I import from my camera raw files into folders and collections in capture 1. I do most of the editing in affinity photo and then return them to capture 1. What happens is that Although the photos worked on in affinity photo stay in the catalog the raw files sometimes disappear, not always just sometimes. I checked to make sure I don't tell capture 1 to delete the raw files from the catalog but it still loses them not always but frequently. This symptom gets worse the larger the collection,, when a collection has over 900-1000 pictures it happens more frequently. I can always reload them from the external drives but the capture 1 engine is absurdly slow... It takes up to 1 hour to peruse a folder of 1000 photos ( TIFF and raw) to find the ones it lost. the capture 1 engine is built using very ancient search algorithms most other suppliers use a browser approach which is almost instantaneous but capture 1 engine is just obsolete.... I have no other hardware that deletes photos just an iMac

@@wrzlbrnth4092 Thanks for information! Then I'll for sure stay with Catalogs, not sessions, and just put 2 sd-cards at each catalog, like I do. And I'll stay with my PC, not going to iMac. I started with Capture One only 13 months ago. I rarely use sessions either, I upload my images to Flickr and prefer to make collections and folders on Flickr, to showcase my work and organize it. If I want to re-edit a RAW-file it's easy just to find the catalog on date, and inside the catalog just search through the date-folders, as they were cathered on my a7III. Sorry for your problems!
