In the video, you'll find my hints on using the new Dehaze tool to get the most out of your RAWs. You'll see how different Capture One Dehaze is from Lightroom Dehaze.
Also, I'll show you the reworked Import process, a feature of Capture One 21 that hasn't been revealed yet. Of course, I've tested the new Speed Edit workflow, a fantastic tool for pro photographers.
Plus, you'll see all the other new features of Capture One 21:
- ProStandard color profiles
- HEIF format support
- Leica tethered shooting support
- Enhanced tooltips
Using smart algorithms, Dehaze removes a haze on your image and improves contrast and color in related areas.
Dehaze tool automatically analyzes your image, but you can pick Shadow Tone manually if you're not satisfied with the default outcome.
Setting a custom Shadow Tone allows you to get more details and enhance color in shadows on your image.
You can easily adjust the Dehaze impact on an image. I don't want to eliminate aerial perspective here, so I'll just reduce it a bit.
Also, the Dehaze tool supports Layers, so if there are some areas that you don't want to dehaze, simply mask them out!
Here are some hints that will help you to enhance your images with Dehaze.
First of all, selecting the Shadow Tone can dramatically affect the result.
Sometimes I pick a manual Shadow Tone just to see what Dehaze can get out of my image.
If you see that the Dehaze has flattened the details in shadows, try to pick a manual Shadow Tone there.
Custom Shadow Tone can also improve colors if the default correction doesn't fit your preferences.
Keep in mind that the new Dehaze tool is not a replacement for Levels or Clarity. It's a new feature that works great together with old tools.
Here I'll adjust Dehaze and accompany it with Color Channel Levels correction and minor Clarity and HDR tweaks. Well, I love the result!
Note that Dehaze can seriously affect your image histogram, so it makes sense to apply it before Levels correction.
Also, Dehaze tends to make images darker, so I prefer to recover dark areas with HDR after.
Let's compare the new Dehaze tool with Clarity. I've added Clarity to the left image variant here and Dehaze to the right variant.
As you can see, Dehaze has a way more complex impact on an image, and Clarity can perfectly supplement this new tool.
Besides removing the haze, the new tool can also add haze to your image.
That's a pretty useful feature when you're editing some fog-friendly pictures.
These features make Dehaze a perfect tool for flat and foggy images.
You can even enhance some regular images with Dehaze. But be careful; you can easily get artifacts and broken colors on your image.
Capture One 21 introduced the new Speed Edit workflow to achieve the same editing speed by using regular shortcuts with no additional hardware.
All the essential tools have Speed Edit shortcuts now; you can set them in the Shortcut Editor window's new tab.
To make an adjustment, simply hold down an assigned key and scroll the mouse wheel or trackpad.
Also, you can left-click and drag your cursor in any direction. To increase adjustment, move your cursor up or right; to decrease - down or left. In the same way, arrow keys can also be used for speed editing.
As you hold down a tool's key, a temporary slider that indicates your adjustments appears below the image.
Speed Edit perfectly develops an idea of Direct Color Editor, presented in Capture One 20. Now, you have control over all the essential tools, and your eyes are always on an image. You don't need to look at sliders and reach them with your cursor. You're 100% focused on editing.
Moreover, with Speed Edit, you can now edit multiple images at the same time. That makes group editing way faster and easier.
Keep in mind that all the adjustments on multiple images are made to the Background layer.
For better experience, I recommend you to set Speed Edit sensitivity that fits you best.

Hi Cary, Thanks! I think the best solution here is to create a new catalog for every new shooting in the field. Then you can import this catalog with edited images into the main catalog (File-->Import Catalog--> Capture One Catalog). Is it as buggy as V20 was when it was released? This is really my biggest question about 21. It took them about 8 months to fix all the bugs that interrupted my workflow with 20.

  • @tomrose2086

    @tomrose2086

    3 жыл бұрын

Yup it is buggy. I downloaded a 30-day trial yesterday ... my first experience with Capture One. I thought it was wonderful when I loaded a few hundred images to check out the demosaicing and image adjustments. I was also impressed by the powerful searching and filtering features. The problems started when I tried to catalogue a 30,000+ collection of DNGs and Canon and Fuji RAW files. It got slower and slower as it progressed and crashed my Win 10 system (Black Screen of Death) six times before I gave up. [ It had managed, by then, to load only about 10,000 images in all]. Also, on each retry, if I tried to exclude duplicates then the exclusion process was even slower , per file, than loading them. A few times, while working with successfully catalogued images, Capture One simply hung for no apparent reason and had to be terminated from taskmgr. Painful. I have been using Lightroom almost daily for over 10 years and it is rock solid. It has never crashed, it loads my enormous catalogues PDQ, and is never glacially slow. Its DAM is excellent and the UI is simple yet powerful. Unfortunately the results of its basic demosaicing are not great. Ten years ago they were as good as it gets, but nowadays several competitors do a better job. It is a shame that Capture One is so buggy, because RAW files loaded into Capture One look wonderful, even before I tweak them. It probably works for someone with a small catalogue of images, but for anyone that works with many thousands of files the crashing and slow loading issues are deal breakers. The software engineering of some parts of the application is just not up to proper professional standards and it obviously has not been comprehensively tested. I see from the Internet that the big problem I encountered has been bothering some users for at least the last three years. I ask "Why is the company dicking about adding features and fixing minor bugs when the application has this huge problem?" [ I have been a software developer since the late 1970's, so I am not taking any BS excuses about this. Shrink-wrap software should simply load and run. Good software never crashes. Thank goodness they don't program factory automation, medical equipment, or engine management systems ]. So: I tried ACDSee, which is almost there, but I could not manage to completely remove colour fringing with its weird fringe removal controls [something that Lightroom lets me do quite easily with a combination of one click CA removal, a few points on its defringe sliders, and finishing off with the defringe option of the adjustment brush]. Exporting JPEGs for the web and TIFF files for printing is also rather slow. Then I tried ON1, but the basic demosaicing gave me no more detail than Lightroom, just as much noise, and rather muted colours. PhotoNinja is excellent, but cannot handle .RAF files At present RawTherapee is looking like the most likely Lightroom replacement for demosaicing and adjustments. I really want to extract the best possible technical quality from my RAW files, so if it does the job (and does not crash) it will be worth the effort of learning the interface and doing without Lightroom's excellent asset management. And (amazing when it compares so well with expensive commercial products) it is free!

@@tomrose2086 I generally try to limit my catalogs to about 4000-5000 images to keep things snappy. Unfortunate that you’re still having issues with it, as one of the headline features of 21 is improved responsiveness with large catalogs. They still have a lot of work to do, apparently.

Great overview, much better than the useless trailer by C1. Sadly, C1 21 is a big disappointment overall. The "Pro" camera profiles look overcooked. They may avoid hue rotation in some cases but the hues look off and the saturation is too high. The new control over brush parameters is nice but it is just a very late fix to a longstanding problem. What was the point for the brush flow keyboard shortcuts when C1 never gave one feedback about the flow setting? The "dehaze" results don't look very natural either. I'd rather use my own level/contrast/saturation adjustments. The speed edit controls are a good idea but not a plus for anyone who is using a console already. Overall, C1 21 is a big let down. So many issues have not been fixed and instead we got some minor improvements, questionable camera profiles (for a few cameras only), and a tool that many don't need and which can be emulated pretty easily. No upgrade for me this time.
