    Thanks Paul for the tight introduction to CO 21. Although it seems to be a minor change only, the speed edit functionality will be used by most users pretty fast. The change in ICC-profile is subtle but noticeable for my sony camera. It is understandable for me, that user don't want to buy an upgrade to V21 due to the lack of new (expected or desired) features. Other announced editors promise you a world of wonders compared to Capture One. All I want is a stable, reliable raw editor. And this is what I've got for the last year I am using capture one and hopefully will get also in the future. Looking forward for thursday :-)

    No spectacular changes indeed, but a lot of added refinement, especially regarding the overall user experience (including that of new users). To be honest, I was expecting more (although I don't miss anything specific), but the new features make a lot of sense: C1's unmatched user interface has become even better. That may be more valuable than any of the big "effect features" that are so much desired by some. For those who like to stitch and blend, there are great plugins out there.

    The speed edit is great for editing a maximized photo on my laptop. In other words I can hide all open windows and menus such as the browser. I think that alone is worth the upgrade, as it doesn't matter how many sliders there are, if you are restricted to a small area, your edit is limited, and it can be frustrating, toggling between workspaces.

    I think it’s not easy for software companies to please everyone, because everyone has different needs and wishes. So everything I say here is completely personal and „only“ my opinion. To me this feels more of a minor release than a major one, at least regarding the visual news a.k.a new tools. Haven’t checked everything of course, especially the under the hood stuff is kinda hard to check. I‘ve mentioned this before, as someone who is venturing into portrait photography I would hope for support/automisation of creating mask, for example to mask skin. This is really time consuming, and hardware features like neural engines in the new MAC‘s might help in the future. Even more so I could think of doing skin retouching on one image and copy these adjustments to the rest of the images from that portrait session. That would be a gamer changer for portrait and even more so wedding photography. And there comes my point in Capture One „only“ being a RAW developer, I think in the long run this would be a mistake. Photoshop and the likes are mainly one image after the other editors, and here software like Capture One could have a massive advantage for editing huge number of images. This of course would mean making use of the different chips in these new SOC, for these kind of tasks it would be the ML cores. But Capture One overall seems to be very focused on main CPU cores, they already seem to not making a lot of usage of the GPU which probably could speed up some tasks already. I would assume creating previews could benefit from making usage of the GPU, which Capture One mainly seems to neglect. Since I had to setup my old I7 computer anyway I did a not so quick test. It’s a second gen. I7 CPU running at 3.4 GHz, 32GB RAM, SATA SSD for OS and Capture One, separate SATA SSD for the catalog solely, and an internal HD for the RAW files (24 MP). Had an old AMD graphics card in it, which I replaced by an nVidia RTX2060X. Installed Windows and Capture One using the old AMD card, imported the CO catalog of roughly 28000 images. Afterwards changed to the nVidia card and re-installed everything from scratch, and did another test importing the catalog. Both times it almost took 19 hours for Capture One 20 to finish it’s work and have the previews in 3840x2160 done, which is the native resolution of my 32“ monitor. Already opened a ticket with Capture One a few weeks ago given them all necessary details, log files, hardware information, etc., which they thanked me for due to the huge amount of information. Obviously the guys are very busy, so far I haven’t heard anything from them. Honestly I have no issue opening tickets or opening requests, question usually is what it’s forth for. But this is with every company.

    @@Paulreiffer Hi Paul. Well, I'm sure plenty of work has been done behind the scenes but us, users, can't really grasp the whole picture. I'm coming from the printing software industry and I know very wll that users often don't realize how complex it is sometimes to modify this or add feature X or Y...:) That being said, I think the biggest omission on this new version is the absence of HDR fusion/panorama. This is huge for most of us nature/landscape photographer and because it has been in Lightroom for so long, we all expect to have it in C1. so not having it in C1 21 is, yes, a big disappointement. Also, if the pick/unpick feature is great, it doesn't look as efficient as it is on LR as you must do it on the import window.....where you cannot really get the full size or quality of your picture (unless I missed something, correct me if I'm wrong). It looks to be a bit primitive but maybe it is just me. Lastly, I still find it difficult to navigate through catalogs, imports, folders....Where in LR it is really clear, here in C1 it looks messy and I often struggle to organize my librairy correctly. I woul dhave liked a clearer, neater interface, visually speaking. find it a bit cluttered at the moment. Probably a personal preferences though, I admit. Anyway, thanks for the feedback. In my view, the entire Keystone function could do with a modern rethink. Instead of guide lines, I think I now expect to see live feedback of the effect I'm having, visually, for example. • @Paulreiffer

    @Paulreiffer

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yeah - that's the thing that seems to have been lost among the cries of "where's this or that feature" - under the hood, a LOT of work has been done to make things faster, more stable, more authentic, etc. And that work can't be ignored. I'm 100% on the same page in terms of wanting a stable, fast, true raw editor - and not having toys that distract from that. (But I'm also aware that others feel differently). If memory serves me correctly, the previews were retina-ised a version ago? (But don't quote me on that, may be wrong?) But their generation has certainly sped up, and if applying a new ProStandard ICC you might notice that difference too. On the ICC front, however, it is (genuinely) a case of "good things come to those who wait", and I'm pretty sure you'll see your kit covered pretty soon. (Again, that's my opinion, not fact...!) ;-)

    Thanks Paul, might have to do that. I also find when I look at different folders of images, it is slow to generate the previews. I have 32 gb ram and nvme ssd. However, my pictures folder is on wd external drive with 5400 rpm. I only do sessions and the capture folders are within each of the image folders. Maybe I need to buy an external 7200 rpm or does it matter?

    Honestly, the second you go external, there will be a slowdown - adding in to that a mechanical drive, and you're doubling the impact. Are there any SSD options (NVME 1gbps/2gbps) options that would work with your setup?

    Not a big jump from C120 which I am very happy with it. May be I will think they give me 50%off for C1 21 otherwise C120 works very much for me

    Paul, just found out the biggest feature of 21, that doesn’t seem to have covered in any of the reviews i’ve seen so far. The number of workstations you can run has gone from 3 to 2 for the full product and from 2 to 1 for the camera make specific versions. This applies to both perpetual and subscription. I hope i am wrong. Please let me know. Capture one are starting to make Adobe look like a paragon of virtue.

    Hi John, For existing users it stays the same - no change to the number of seats. For new users, yes - the Pro version now offers 2 seats (down from 3, but the same as other packages) and the discounted "brand" (Nikon/Fuji/etc) versions can only be activated on 1 computer at a time. Doesn't stop them being installed on multiple workstations, but only 1 (or 2 for Pro) can be actively used. Effectively, though, if an existing user you'll see no change to how many stations you can run on.

    Paul thanks for this. I am on a Fujifilm subscription and wanted to go back to perpetual given the value of the updates to me so far. Capture one do not allow this other than buying a new license. Still thats just my problem (and new users) rather than all existing users.

    Before you buy, see if a) the version supports your camera, b) if firmware changes have altered the nature of your raw files then, if this is updated in the version you buy, c) if your lenses are all supported with profiles, and d) how much it will cost you to buy the next version when support becomes available. There are no guarantees. There is a request for support web page. And no guarantees. I hope that C1 management understands that there is no point in buying their software if the support is not complete - or to make it more clear: utilization data sent back by application users does not reflect those that do not use it.

    Wow, adjusting the brush size on Windows using a WACOM pen is unusable. Going from 0 to 100 is barely a centimeter stroke. And the decision to use the right button instead of the left, what were they thinking!?!

    I've heard this from a couple of areas now - regarding sensitivity. I'd definitely raise a support request to see if something can be done, as I know others have already: support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

    I move my pen DIAGONALLY, so that the left or right movement is ramped more slowly, that works for me... Steeper the angle the slower the ramp.. hth

    Bit confused at the disappointment at "me" Julius - I don't recall ever saying what was in or out of v21, other than "it's still a work in development" and when I assisted David to show one feature a few weeks back. I've also been quite vocal myself about my dislike of the practice of selling software "unseen", and wouldn't suggest anyone did that unless they felt the decision was the right one themselves. So - yeah... confused! That said, as I've said before - some features have high value for some photographers and a low value to me, while others are seen as "essential" to my workflow. No one release is going to please everyone, and I'd say this release is very much a "mixed bag" of reactions. For me, personally, I'm happy to see Capture One stay focused on workflow and image integrity instead of being distracted by the need to deliver toys and other gimmicks - but, over time, I'm sure they'll come - I just hope it's only when they can be done "right". (For reference, also - Phase One hasn't been related to Capture One for a while now, separate companies.)
