Today is the new version release of Capture One. There's some really nice additions including Speed Edit, an advanced Dehaze tool, ProStandard Color Profiles, HEIC support, learning tutorial integration, faster asset management tools and a redesigned import dialogue.
This is an exciting update - Capture One 21 is one of my favorite imaging editors for raw photography support.

I love C1, but this looks like they just saved up a year's worth of small patches and called it a new version.

I agree Kaye, not really enough here to justify an upgrade. I was a PS user before I switched to C1 (thanks to Adobe’s move to subscription model). There are still things that I can do in PS but not in C1, but generally, I much prefer working in C1 to PS. When I do go back to PS, it feels harder, and I was pretty comfy with it before. I recall watching one of C1’s tutorial videos for v20 (I think) where they said other packages have a Dehaze tool and they explained why C1 didn’t have such a tool and how you could achieve the same thing with the existing tools in v20 with a lot more control & why it was better. Now they have offered Dehaze in v21 ;-) C1 have a business model where they come out with updates every year and charge around £100 or so (I’ve not checked latest upgrade cost). There have been tools they have added in prior updates that I really wanted, the luminance mask to name one, but there were others, and this has been my incentive to pay for the upgrade, but I don’t think they have really added much that I want this time round, so I’ll wait until v22, see what that brings.

  • @TheLDunn1

@@ghosttownsentinel5288 ....yes, I’ve thought along those lines too....but, I think there is one important difference. With C1, I can chose not to pay, what can seem like, the ‘annual license fee’, and I can continue to work with the older version and opennall my edited photos etc. With Adobe, my understanding is that when I stop paying the subscription, I no longer can edit anything, and even access to a prior library maybe inhibited. For me, there is still a big difference, although, it can, and does, feel like these annual releases with minimal changes are a bit of a license...and then you start thinking, why not just pay it monthly....so I do see your point, but the subtle difference is still there between the two, and that makes all the difference to me.

Agreed... I pre-ordered based on my faith in the company, believing that they would deliver something worth my money. I feel totally let down. I will absolutely not pre-order based on faith again. I like the DeHaze and the new Proviles (ProStandard), but as Kaye says, this is just a patch, not a full-priced upgrade.

I use C1 tethered in studio to capture images and show them to the client with a basic profile applied but frankly that's the only time I use C1, even as a Fuji photographer. Dehaze is a welcome addition for my landscapes but my problems with C1 lie with a convoluted interface (for me), lack of iPad support and a couple missing key features. This update won't make me ditch Lightroom.

No digital-tech uses LR on set. Or otherwise. C1 is the only professional industry standard. If you go pro-- and I mean ACTUAL pro in a real market (of which there are 2 in USA), then you're going to be using C1. And you then have to think about for what reasons that is. After years of using Lr, I switched to C1. I mainly take photos of weddings (over 2,500 photos from the wedding for selection and subsequent editing of about 250 photos) and reports, and thanks to C1, my process has incredibly accelerated, in addition, I am more satisfied with the colors produced by C1. Always after introducing new improvements in Lr, I will try it, but the speed and possibilities of adjustments will always return me to continue with C1. However, I will most likely skip the latest version 21 (min until a bigger discounted price reappears like every year). For a new user, I recommend C1 21, however, it is ideal to try demo versions of both.

I've been on and off using C1 for a couple of years now. But this latest release, has me gravitating to perhaps full time. These new features are very welcomed additions to an already awesome software application. I just wish they had some level of cloud and mobile integration like Lr. Other than that its pretty perfect! I'm looking forward to editing my Sony files with the new ProStandard profiles. That could be a game changer for Sony users!

Nice additions that would be a sub release for a major version. But in todays age companies charge more for less. The keystone correction is still outdated when compared to LR one, Image import still can’t have multiple folders selected, but you need to go through the “exclude duplicates” with sub folders (yes this is not new, this exists since at least Version 7), no panorama stitching, no side panel for color selection for guidelines (like there is for grid), etc, etc, etc, etc, It costs here 18,000 yen upgrade, 2000 yen more than the last version that actually had some stuff worth to upgrade. What did C1 do the whole time? Add button overlays for tutorials?

I'm seriously considering Capture One & getting rid of ON1. Keystoning correction is a biggie for me. I do need skin retouching in something. I saw the Nikon D810 listed, but not the D800, which I have still. I'm assuming that it suppoorts the D800 also (?)

I would strongly suggest jumping to Capture One from ON1, and I'm not even the biggest CO fan (I use Lr Classic mostly) - Capture One's handling of colors and dynamic range are out of this world, very neutral to begin with, and extremely nimble and precise in the editing process. I've tried most everything under the sun, and Capture One is the only one I keep trying/going back to for specific work requirements. It isn't an industry standard for nothing!

@@romiemiller3093 I use Lr over Capture One for a couple of reasons (I much prefer Adobe's debayering of Nikon files, as it looks more natural to me, and I find its catalog management to be far superior - also, my favourite presets aren't available for CO); it also has keystoning, albeit I find it a tad clunkier than CO's. But yeah, as far as precise color management goes, Capture One is the real deal, if you take the time to dig into it taking advantage of the wealth of available camera profiles as starting points. Try and experiment applying profiles from other camera models/brands to your raws, too! It's very interesting and lots of fun

Sounds like 21 is evolution rather than revolution, but some pleasing updates - I use Capture One exclusively for it's RAW capabilities as it's just so superior in my opinion (I shoot fuji). I also use Lightroom, their bundle with Photoshop & other Creative Cloud software is hard to resist, plus I like their cloud storage - must say that editing an image in lightroom is (again, in my opinion) a more intuitive and pleasant experience - however - image quality is the most important thing, so I will keep my clunky workflow between the two. I would not be mad if Adobe acquired Capture One... ! Thanks for the tour!
