Canon RF 50mm 1.8 Vs 1.2: Can YOU Tell the DIFFERENCE?! (Comparison and Review)

Can't decide on your next prime portrait lens for mirrorless cameras? In this video, I'll be comparing the Canon RF 50mm 1.2 vs 1.8.
✨✨Are you on the INSIDE? Check out thephotoinsiders.com - EXCLUSIVE video content and learning community for photographers✨✨
This is a real hands-on review of my experience with the two mirrorless lenses for Canon. Is there a difference? Is this the best canon lens out of all of the best canon lenses for portrait photography?
It's probably debatable whether you'd consider this prime lens a portrait photography lens at all, much less the best lens for portraits. This photography lens review is one of the many photography gear reviews for Canon that I do, and as you may know, the 50mm lens or the nifty fifty is, in my opinion, one of the best lenses for photographers. It remains to be seen if one of these will top out as the best lens for Canon R5 or best lens for Canon R6, or any future Canon mirrorless camera.
Can YOU Tell the DIFFERENCE?! Let me know in this Comparison and Review video for the Canon RF 50mm 1.8 Vs 1.2.
Hope you enJoy!

You had me at "Never work from home," but your thoughts about the 28-70 really caught my attention. I'm navigating a slow migration from EF to RF glass. I still have EF bodies as well as an R5, so my migration strategy is to go for RF glass that does something different from my EF lenses. The 28-70 might just be the ticket. BTW, I have an RF 50mm f/1.8. Nice improvement over the EF versions of the lens and I had no expectation of it being L-series quality. Great value-for-money and it gives me a good lightweight lens for gimbal use, hiking, and travel (eventually).

Oh, Vanessa! you compare two 50 mm lenses and in the end you recommend the "Brocken" 28-70 f2.0 - now I really can't wait until my 28-70 f2.0 is finally delivered to Berlin and my EOS R5!

Love the 50 1.2 super lens! Got the trinity as I prefer the RF24-70 over the 28-70 for the weight plus that 24 which I have used a lot over the years on previous 24-70’s, and when I need a low light or bokeh beast that 50 always delivers 👌🏻 Obviously you can’t go wrong with the 28-70 either!

If anyone is trying to figure out what action to put on their control ring, I would suggest exposure compensation. Especially if you shoot in situations where the light changes a lot. I have mine set to exp comp but to where I have to half press my shutter button before it will change. That makes it to where it’s harder to accidentally change things.

I have the RF 1.8 lens. While it’s definitely not at the 1.2 level, for the money, it is very good. Wide open isn’t as good as it could be, but by 2.8 most of the issues are gone, and by 4-5.6 it’s shockingly good. Of course, if you prefer to shoot wide open, the 1.2 is the better lens.

Love your comments on the 28-70 mm lens. Not sure which way for me to turn, due to the EF/ RF mount changes I have 16-35mm f4.0 L, 50mm f1.4, Rf 85mm f2.0 and in my further changes over to RF looking at a Rf mount 28-70mm L as you explained today, or the Rf 135mm f2.0 L when it comes out in 2021. I mainly like street/ beach photographs. I could almost say I have the mid range focal length primes covered, but I should transition more to L lens because those Rf mounts are delicious. So, my next purchase is important to take me into 2022.

A 50 mm 1.2 is really s specialty lens. Traditionally a 50 mm lens is cheap, small and easy to replace. That is sort of the point of most 50 mm lenses. Using an extremely expensive 50 mm is possible but really: absolute image quality was never the purpose of a 50 mm slr lens. Being portable, staying out of sight, not risking getting robbed due to walking around with something expensive etc etc. all these aspects weigh heavily on when buying glass at that focal length. I own both lenses and the 1.8 is a much safer bet in an everyday environment. Thanks for the video!

Yep good video. Thanks. One thing I'd like to point out that is often missed in reviews, is a lot depends on the situation. For instance, if you are doing a shoot indoors, then you would probably choose a 50mm or even 35mm over a trinity lens as most of your work would be at the same distance where at if you were doing a wedding shoot you would want the flexibility of a zoom. As for the 1.8vs 1.2, choose the 1.8 if you have a plain backdrop which you would not be shooting with bokeh in mind and then 1.2 for those shots that would have bokeh. It would def be interesting to see a video on this, and which lens you would use for which situation. Now to watch some more of your videos!

Is that the same filter that goes into glasses for computer use and if so could you expand on the comment or make a video? I wear glasses and work on a computer for my day job and they have a filter in them to cut down on glare, etc. So wondering if it's the same thing and if I need a set of glasses just for phot editing. Just one of those days, hey!!! :D But, you got through it :D 1.2 is good for those low light situations and that's what I'd buy a lens that fast for. Not so much for the bokeh but for the fact that you're not going to always have that great light to shoot with. Or, even want or need to shoot in such a situation. But, one thing you do know, now. And, that is you have several alternatives for using lead weights to do your bicep curls!!! :D :P :P

Haha, you're hilarious! I'm pretty sure I could tell the difference (the 1.8 probably isn't $2000 worse, though) and most people probably wouldn't notice and sometimes that is what matters, most people don't care about your gear, just that you can make good photos of them, I do these comparisons a fair bit and that is how I ended io with the EF 85mm f1.4 IS over the EF 85mm f1.2, I'm not sure I could tell the difference unless the images were side by side. The 28-70mm f2 is such a useful range that almost covers 3 of the most useful primes and who would argue with anyone that can hold that bad boy up all day, anyway! :D

I got the 50 1.8 first hoping for a light weight lens that could be held one hand with flash off camera with other hand. But I ended up going to the 24-70 f2.8 for the flexibility of range without shifting. But the real challenge with the 50 was the noise when focusing, even when just holding down the BF button while taking shot. I also like to be able to seamlessly shift into video mode and then back to stills. The 50 just seems too noisy for video if you are using camera mic.

I have the 1.2 and it’s my most used and favorite lens. But when I was still using Canon’s DSLRs, I had the EF equivalent of the RF 1.8. If you’re starting out or want to use your resources elsewhere, the 1.8 performs far beyond its price point. The 1.2 is better of course, but most clients will never know the difference. DO NOT cheap out on your 70-200 by getting the f/4. This one, you can go cheap out on if needed.

i like the summary. the 50mm 1.2 is a specialised lens, perfect for a shot or two but expensive for little use for the majority of us. the 50 1.8 is cheap enough that u can put it in the bag and its there if u need it. the 28-70 or the 24-70 is the better overall and most flexible choice. your very funny too, i like the comments at the start. and during when u ad lib.

    hi, i think we have become pen pals Vanessa. you have made videos talking about the 50mm in the past and i have commented often. i want to say that the 50mm 1.2 would make a great but expensive addition to your weight room lol. i have mostly photographed weddings with the 50mm 1.8 and no complaints just applause for my work. i now have upgraded to the 1.4 and sorry to say have no work. however if i shot at f4 sharpness is the same for the 1.2, 1.4, 1.8 i am thinking most people here are new and i would say start with the 50mm 1.8,1.4, i know no one is asking me what i think ;} i am still giving u a like ;}

I find ZOOM lenses hinder my creative. I prefer to lock myself into a prime and eliminate that composition variable. ZOOMs provide too many choices when other factors are involved. In other words.. when I want a 50mm perspective, i put on the prime and start shooting. Keep in mind, i do mostly fashion, headshots, and families,... when I do weddings, i need my 28-70 to capture fleeting spontaneous moments (i.e. my fingers are faster than my legs at zooming). All this to say, using a ZOOM messes with my mental focus and creative agenda by allowing me to too easily slip into a alternative perspective... me not likey.

But not enough: of course you can and do buy the 1.8 50mm for several reasons even if you have and perhaps because you have a 28-70 2.0. Weight and safety reasons of course in some situations and locations. chaotic review in short. 🙂

If you are making money with photography, then you can deduct it, anyway. If you are not, then it's "just" a hobby and I do know people who are running around with $13k telephoto lenses for their birding hobby... Would I personally spend a year's worth of rent on a single lens to see the reflection of the photographer in the sparrow's eye? Probably not, but if you have the spare cash sitting around anyway...

Why spend over 2k-3k for one lens one year warranty maybe no is when you can get similar exact lens half the cost. I think tamron and sigma budget pro lenses are fine better build and better warranties. Slight differences like between 1.8 and 1.4 but big difference in prices. Also keep in mind 28-70f2.0 slight difference from 24-70f2.8 except you losing focal lengths and heavier cost alot more...is it worth to replace 24-70f2.8. No. You can get sigma 24-70f2.8 art hsm art OS less $1k and it has weatherseal and IS unlike others.

One life I think is was an excellent video . I wanted to know her opinion and what she prefers over all as far as gear is concerned the 28-70 f2 covers the 50 range so why spend money on a 50mm 1.2 that has limitations . The 50 on the f2 I’m sure creates a wonderful bokeh and you get various focal ranges and if you go in aspc mode with the r5 you get even more length and compression without losing much quality . Now if you dnt have money for the rf 28-70 f2 or 50 1.2 or u dnt plan to use it for professional use and maybe just as a family photo lens than the 50mm 1.8 is an excellent option . She covered this all. Deepen your thinking mane ! add some layers to it ! You know She provides very great well thought out information for all of us through KZread and books etc . So be thankful . Have a blessed day .
