Thanks for the great video, Daniel! I love that you highlight the excellence of both, yet remind us that "environment" is going to play more of a role with the 50. How that is "not bad or not good," but a very important consideration on the type of shot we'll get. I own the RF 85mm 2.0, so am leaning toward the RF 50mm 1.2 next. In an ideal world, I will one day own both ;)!! (I'm a Minnesotan, and I'm "with you" on weather in the winter! YIKES :)!!)
This video was awesome and answered all my questions!!! Thank you!!!!!
thank you for doing comparisons with same subject/composition... can't tell you how many times I've seen reviews where they compare wildly different images.
Hi Daniel great cmparision depicting the look of both these fantastic lenses ...Ok we all know that they are expensive but you do pay a higher price for state of the art optics..I have seen a lot of changes and advances in cameras and lenses since the 70's..yeah way back lol, and now i can appreciate what represents the pinnacle ATM of modern lenses.. I have used the Canon RF f2 / 28 to 70 because i just had to experience this marvel of a standard zoom lens...While i love the quality and versatility of this lens i am selling it and have replaced it with the RF 2.8 / 24 to 70 as this is the lens i wanted when i used the EF line and owned the non IS version..and a great performer too..It has been a long time since i've used quality fast primes so the RF 85 and RF 50 1.2's were purchased..All i can say is WOW! these 2 lenses on a R5 are just magic, and wide open performance is superb.. I have 4 RF zooms and they are great and versatile lenses, but now having these 2 primes i can create a look to my images and also shoot in very low light..Sure the lenses don't make images, you do..but i love the way you can create that telephoto look with blown out backgrounds with ease, and create an instant background canvas.When you stop down the lenses optical look is just normal to that focal length...So yes i am excited to own these two excellent super fast primes.
Just got the 85 and love the image quality. I got it mostly for portraits but also felt that getting a 50mm crossed over into territory that the 24-70 already covers, despite the difference in aperture. I still have the classic 50mm 1.8, and with the RF adapter it works a treat still.

@@DanielWhiteWithCanon I haven't tried the RF 85 , but I do own the EF 85 adapted to the R6 and that is better than it ever was on my 5D4 so I reckon the RF version must be amazing.

Love my rf85 1.2!!! It is awesome!! Great video!!!
Cool comparison. I just ordered the 50. I had many situations where my old EF 85 f/1.4 was simply too tele and bokeh was too much. I look forward to get a hang on putting the environment in a subtle way. The 85 is for the “dreamy” unrealistic shots. Which I (hopefully) still enjoy 😅 That’s my “interpretation”. Sold my 50 f/1.4 and look forward to falling in love with my fav focal length 🤩
What is your go to for portrait photography?
Great vid.
1:52 "macro capability...kind of". Dude that's one of the shortcomings of the 85 is that its not great for detail shots of rings, etc because its relatively long min focus distance. Thanks for the comparison!
I use the EF 85 mm 1.4L IS on my R5, and it works fine, sharpness off the charts. I don't think I'll be changing to the RF 85 1.2. I am considering the 50 1.2, but I'm not sure.
I just tested both of these recently! I have to say that I would go for the 50 since that’s my preferred focal length and it’s also not as enormous haha... I really loved the results of the RF 50. I don’t think it’s as unique looking as the EF version, but it’s definitely an improvement in sharpness & autofocus. Nice video! 😊

Hey Zach that is a very good point the 85 is a monster. Both are crazy sharp. I wonder what they will have to do to the next line up of lenses after RF to top what they have now.
I have a 85mm for me it is a great for really close up head shots if in exterior, but for full or medium shots it is better for studio since it blows out the background and we can't see much, maybe it is good also for night shots because of the bokeh. So for exterior, I prefer the 50mm it is more versatile specially when you have more than one person to shoot and there is no space to take some distance.
50mm is more versatile but 85mm has that depth of field that is hard to beat. I prefer the latter

And you can always stop down the lens if you WANT more background.
@ghas4151

When the subject is framed the same, the depth of field between the two lenses will be the same. The blur in the background will also be the same. The only difference is that the image from the 85mm will be more compressed i.e. the background elements will look bigger and you’ll have less of the background within the frame.

I actually want both. I got RF 50mm 1.2.

I have yet to shoot with to many off brand lens but from what I hear the mirrorless cameras have virtually no problems with them on comparison to the DSLRs.
85 all the way! I feel the 50 is too middle of the road. For wide I go 35. For beauty, the 85. And if you have the room, 85 can even do full body portraits beautifully.
@DanielWhiteWithCanon

It’s a good middle ground for blowing out the background and not adding any weight to your subject 😅 but at 1.2 both will blow the background out pretty well.

@@Keystroker88 of course money is always important. And you have to consider what kind of pictures you take. For me, the 85 1.2 is completely worth it. I think it's canon's best lens. It's so sharp and focuses so well. And the bokeh is phenomenal. I have gotten compliments on the most boring pictures.
Thanks for the video, I have 1 qq. These lenses does not mention IS on it, does it mean they do not have IS?

They do not have IS. They are designed to be photo lenses used with the ibis on the R6 and R5.

Depends on your need. 50mm and 85mm are for two different purposes. I think 50mm is for all types of photography but 85mm for portrait only. Thanks. Monirul Islam (65) Dhaka, Bangladesh.
You really hit the only relevant difference on the head here. I use a 40/88 equivalent combo for portraits for the same reason. Good call on the Helsinki cobblestones btw, lol. They are pretty though ;-)

35 + 85 makes more sense. 50 as a backup as It often feels too tight for short working distance.
