Canned Fish of Trader Joe's, Part 1 | Canned Fish Files Ep. 47

Ойын-сауық

Finally. Trader Joe's. I try their canned fish. Yes. A review, a taste test. I HAVE TO MENTION THESE KEYWORDS. Sardines, trout, dorade, herring, mackerel, it's all on the way. Part 1 of 3. Unless everybody hates it...
On test:
Trader Joe's Lightly Smoked Sardines in Olive Oil
Trader Joe's Farm Raised Smoked Trout Fillets, Skinless in Canola Oil

    You know, I got all excited my first time trying buying TJ's brand name "deens." But when I actually went to go eat them, I have to admit they were a bit disappointing. I thought for sure they'd be at least slightly a cut above the rest. They taste fine, and the price is decent. But to me, they're just kind of your normal run of the mill "average Joe" of the sardine world. Maybe the trout will curb my doubt? Lol.

  • @CannedFishFiles

    @CannedFishFiles

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, if you only shop at TJ's, then I assume these sardines your only choice for a pilchard. Or if you just have to save a dollar vs some Belas. I mean, if you were just completely focused on protein and feeling confident that the quality would be consistent, they're a great buy. The trout did feel a little more special, maybe an alternative to kippers or decent cheap mackerel.

    Have you ever had French sardines? I browsed your videos and didn't see any "dégustation". The French age their sardines like wine and some have the year indicated with the word, "millésime" the equivalent of "vintage". The cans are turned over from year to year as they do with champagne before the final bottling. I've got a can of 2013 and a 2014. The most famous brand is Connétable and in addition to the basic extra virgin olive oil, they have various flavors like lemon, Provençale, etc. It's become chic to enjoy canned sardines in some bistros in Paris. Sardines are great with artisanal pain de campagne, but since you eat them with chopsticks, have you considered putting them over a bowl of hot "koshihikari" rice? There ARE differences in rice, and "koshihikari" is considered one of the best. BTW I just got a shipment of Nuri sardines in tomato sauce that I'm eager to enjoy, but am having some Connétables as a first course tonight. If you ever make it to Portugal be sure to visit a sardine specialty shop where you can drool like a dude in a ... sardine store! Bon appétit!

    Scales are fine. I guess they've got calcium? It's kinda nasty when there's just a bunch of them flaking off the top of the fish. If you've been eating lots of brislings, you probably wouldn't have noticed any scales. They've got to be itty bitty on them.

    that looks like a lot of scales. i would pay a dollar more just to get fewer scales. I thought Trader Joe's was supposed to be upscale, not "let's cut whatever corners we can to keep prices down" but guess not.

    As someone who is a noob when it comes to canned fish (only had anchovies that were skinless and fileet); do everyone eat the scales and spine on canned sardines or is Matthew just a badass? Lol. I can get the concept of eating the spine as it makes every bite crunchy but the scales just seem... weird. Tasteless(?), hard and might get stuck between your teeth (and even worse - make your gum hurt) etc etc.
