I think they were making fun of Sinead O'Connor who attacked the catholic church around this time.

The lovely girls competition is a satirical take on the Rose of Tralee festival which is held every year. But I'm surprised you'd think it's a "historic" thing. Beauty pageants take place in the US quite a lot.

That’s true! I meant for the “challenges” they were a bit out dated. In the US the challenges are less cooking more talent/bikini

I once went to a Father Ted night hosted by Joe Rooney who played Father Damo (The Cool Priest) in the episode "Old Grey Whistle Theft" and there was a Lovely Girls competition, the winner of which was someone dressed as a Nun.

Father Ted was pitched to Irish TV stations but they wouldn't make it as it was considered too sacrilegious and so it was pitched to British TV companies with Channel 4 taking it.

That is not correct, Father Ted was produced by Hat Trick Productions, a British company and pitched directly to channel 4 in the U.K.

This is a common misconception. It was never pitched to RTE. Linehan and Matthews went straight to Channel 4 because they new it would reach a wider audience. The same reason Linehan's other creations (like Big Train and the IT Crowd) were pitched to British TV companies.

Mixed schools I look back & think are better. I went to an all boys school then after leaving, unleashed into a workplace full of girls & women. I never felt so gauche & embarrassed, they used to rib me relentless & mother me in equal measure. I was certainly 'fast tracked' into hopefully, a more rounded person, trying to understand a womens viewpoint. If I went into an all male environment? Hmm?

@@MeganRuth was gonna reply but you got your answer. I used to play onine games with a deaf guy and would sometimes take over transcribing fleet comms, battle comms, or just teamspeak or discord shit talking into the channel he had for relaying. I was surprised at how many variations there were, and how ireland ISL is very different to BSL or ASL and others. The way that nordic countries might be similar, or latin based languages, or etc etc, sign language has it's own variation on that that sometimes doesnt connect when it comes to location. A very basic google says irish sign language is most similar to australian sign language. Anyway, dont take my word for it, i was just very curious and asked lots of questions, and when starting to learn realised im in the wrong part of the world to do that... i literally could not find an IRL course to teach me, and even then it would only be ISL. anywhoo, have a wiki en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_Sign_Language
