Gordon Bennet phrase derives from a real person whose exploits were widely published and provoked astonishment. Hence when you want to express amazement or incredulity, you say Gordon Bennet. It's still surprisingly used quite a lot in England.

8:14 For many years, Margaret was the most common female first name in the UK. For the past couple of years it's been in second place, after Susan. There are about half a million of each.

The phrase isn't Gordon Bennett it is Gawd "n" bennett, there is not and never was anyone called Gordon Bennett. A very long time ago people in times of fear or crisis used to utter the words "may god and saint Benedict preserve us"

3:57 You must've noticed that the elderly are greatly under-represented in London's demographics. A high proportion of elderly residents move away from cities including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Leicester, Bradford etc., primarily moving to the coast. They're a major part of the white flight, moving away from cities they've lived in all their lives, but no longer feel comfortable in. Often, all the people they've known have already moved away &/or died, so they have no reason to stay where they have little in common with their new neighbours.

After a slow-burner in S1 and S2, this is where it finally got going. The BBC wanted to cancel the show after both S1 and S2 respectively but S3 was where it finally came into it’s own. The Christmas special would be a sad moment in hindsight. If you get to S4, you’ll see why.

I always assumed "Gordon Bennett!" Was a more polite way of saying Gaw Blimey which came from the ancient "God Blind Me!" Usually as a false testament to some.lie you'd told, "God Blind me if what I say is not true!" I DO remember that int the early days of motoring there was a race called The Gordon Bennett Cup.

There's a severe housing shortage; councils won't re-house someone simply due to their age.

In the late 1970’s my aunt and uncle were allocated a 3 bedroom house when they got married, before they had any kids, not for free they paid a fair rent for it. At least half of the houses on the estate are now occupied by foreigners, many private rented at three times council rent, many paid for by housing benefit. Immigration, the gift that never starts giving.

@@RobertTaylor-gz2fu no , such a different era then housing was affordable , my mum and dad bought there first house in 1981 , he told me he was looking at 3, one was an old terrace house that had no heating or inside plumbing, the second was bigger and detached, bomb damaged from the war he would have got a grant to fix it up, both of them were about 1.5 times his annual earnings as a plasterer, he went for a newer 3 bed cost him about 2 years wages but less work, them terrace houses are going for £650,000 now, landlords are charging £1000 a month for a room in a shitty house, so depressing. Our estate was built by my grandad and his friend when they got home from the war, beautiful housing with decent size gardens, they put modern estates to shame, it feels like we are going backwards.

I heard that Gorden Bennet was some guy who used to enter restaurants and rip all the table cloths off the tables while people were eating their meals - so I think it's like saying "Oh no! - Here comes Gorden Bennet, trouble maker!" I'm sure someone will have the full story but that's all I can recall. Perhaps they should change it to "Gorden Ramsay!" - he has is own way of causing havoc. (EDIT - Looks like this may be wrong - I may have only heard half the answer from Stephen Fry on QI - Googling it turned up some other explanation I coudn;t be bothered reading because it kept popping up with adverts etc - some famous general is all I could glean - I like the table cloth ripping maniac story so I'm sticking with that for now lol!)

I found that lame due to the lack of the other OFAH characters. The comedy involving Boycie relies heavily on the contrast between him & Del, Rodney etc. In The Green Green Grass, he's surrounded by characters who aren't entertaining.

And they constantly back stab each other to prevent the other from success. Boycie, on the other hand, is a winner. And the country cast is hilarious.
